LFO!!!!! aka Lite Funky Ones
"new kids on the block had a couple of hits chinese food makes me sick in the summer, in the summer"

that song ripped!

ddd, Monday, 30 September 2002 21:23 (twenty-three years ago)

"I like girls that wear Abecrombie & Fitch..."!! That line cracked me up.

andy, Monday, 30 September 2002 21:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Olive 'You're Not Alone' (esp. the Osbourne & oakenfold mix if you're in an epic mood) - Blueski, you just finished this thread on your own! I'd recommend the Roni Size mix of this one too, perhaps the best thing I've ever heard by him.

Charlie (Charlie), Monday, 30 September 2002 23:29 (twenty-three years ago)

"Song 2"

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 00:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Len - Steal My Sunshine

Wyndham Earl, Tuesday, 1 October 2002 00:46 (twenty-three years ago)

also: they had more than one hit but can you name any of others? no. Hanson - MMMbop.

Wyndham Earl, Tuesday, 1 October 2002 00:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Where's the love for "Where's the Love"?

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 00:55 (twenty-three years ago)

"How Bizarre"
"Tubthumping"
"Barbie Girl"

1997 owns this thread

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 00:56 (twenty-three years ago)

"dance with me" by debelah morgan.

mike (ro)bott, Tuesday, 1 October 2002 01:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Aqua were no one hit wonders - sadly!

'Tubthumping' was from 96 also

obey ze vules ja?

blueski, Tuesday, 1 October 2002 10:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Sex-O-Sonique 'I Thought It Was You'

that wasn't even her biggest hit. don't you remember the godawful "feels so good"?

Pete Heller's Big Love 'Big Love'

heller's had a few hits under different aliases eg. xpress-2. the general dance producer's fetish for different nom-de-plumes surely makes them a moot choice for one-hit-wondery.

michael wells (michael w.), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 10:46 (twenty-three years ago)

whaddabout ini kamosi 'here comes the hot stepper', when was that? although i wouldn't actively destroy it i certainly couldn't be arsed to search for it.

michael wells (michael w.), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 10:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Aqua had only one Top 40 hit (US), "Tubthumping" peak position was in fall of '97. Ini Kamoze was late '94, early '95

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 10:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Tragically, Morgan wasnae even a one-hit wonder. Of course, getting a teenager to rap on your records could be seen as a direct source of inspiration for Li'l Romeo etc...

Oh, and BV3000 (Drinking in LA and Astounded), Olive (You're Not Alone and Outlaw, at least), Bally Sagoo (that one you mentioned and Dil Cheez) and Spooks are not one-hit wonders (how could you forget Karma Hotel? I'd like to know, cos that song is still pissing me off...)

Mr Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 10:54 (twenty-three years ago)

destroy: busted.

michael wells (michael w.), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 11:01 (twenty-three years ago)

ok a lot of the ones i mentioned werent LITERALLY one hit wonders themselves but they're the only ones likely to be remembered...esp. with Olive

Aqua had more than one hit in the UK & Europe of course (Dr Jones, Turn Back Time, Cartoon heroes etc.)

Sex-O-Sonique - this was the only track i noticed by them that got anywhere in the UK...dont recall 'Feels So Good' at all

Pete Heller has produced many dance tracks over the years including 'Ultra Flava' but as far as i was aware he is not part of X-Press II - thats Ashley Beedle with Rocky & Diesel (so there's 3 of them)...in spite of all this i mentioned several dance tracks by psuedonym loving producers because they're well worth remembering

Bran Van have only had one hit in the UK

i seem to remember 'Tubthumping' being big during Euro 96 AND at the Olympics in Atlanta as unofficial theme - making it 1996 but whatever

and the awful 'Karma Hotel' makes Spooks two-hit wonders then...

blueski, Tuesday, 1 October 2002 11:15 (twenty-three years ago)

blueski, you're right re. heller not being in xpress 2. i feel a fool, but he is part of that junior boys own mafia and they all seem fairly interchangeable don't they? didn't fire island ever crack the top 40?

sex-o-sonique was a thinly disguised sonique, she's a 6-foot tall bald dj who's 'feel so good' stayed at number one for about half-a-year. you DO know it.

michael wells (michael w.), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 11:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Michael no! Sonique was NOT Sex-O-Sonique....the latter were a trio of blokes i think who sampled Herbie Hancock for their hit...Sonique used to be part of S Express but otherwise she's always been just Sonique

but you're right about Pete Heller re Fire Island...i just used my list as a good excuse to throw in a few good one-off classic dance tracks...Stardust's 'Music Sounds Better With You' could be classed as a one hit wonder because no other singles were released or htis had under that name but of course Stardust's members have had their own hits before and since....same logic

blueski, Tuesday, 1 October 2002 11:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Where's The Love > MmmBop (tho' both are good). I actually own a copy of the former, but not the latter.

My nominee: Eiffel 65

Jeff W, Tuesday, 1 October 2002 11:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Blueski - Astounded was in like a rocket at number 40. I am not wrong about this.

Mr Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 11:51 (twenty-three years ago)

And Eiffel 65 had Move Your Body as well as Blue.

Mr Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 11:51 (twenty-three years ago)

blueski. i know the vocal was a sample of herbie hancock but i'm fairly certain sonique was at least a part of sex-o-sonique. google calling.

michael wells (michael w.), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 11:56 (twenty-three years ago)

i await that slice of humble pie michael, dont let me down ;)

blueski, Tuesday, 1 October 2002 12:01 (twenty-three years ago)

how would you like it? with ice-cream or custard? apparently sex-o-sonique was full intention under a different name. as with pete heller the incestuousness of the uk house scene leaves me looking a fool for the second time this morning. please forget all my contributions to this thread. and accept my apologies.

michael wells (michael w.), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 12:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Stardust - Music Sounds Better With You

Siegbran (eofor), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 12:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Guru Josh - Infinity

Andrew (enneff), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 12:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Gala had two more hits.

Wisdome - Off The Wall (these Italians are also behind Plaything, so technically not really one hit wonders).
Wes - Alane
Serious Danger - Deeper
Freestylers - Ruffneck
Meja - All About The Money
Monifah - Touch It
Wamdue Project - King Of My Castle
Mr. Oizo - Flat Beat
Ann Lee - 2 Times
Miranda - Vamos A La Playa
Lit - My Own Worst Enemy
Rollergirl - Dear Jessie
Zombie Nation - Kernkraft 400
Sweet Female Attitude - Flowers

Siegbran (eofor), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 12:52 (twenty-three years ago)

great list blueski! and though i understand you have taken liberties with pseudonyms and the like, weren't belo horizonti just the basement jaxx in disguise? i've googled this to no avail, but i do know that they (he? she?) released for the BJ's Atlantic Jaxx label, which is usually a pretty sure sign.

and yes, '97 was a TOP year for good dance music. basically anything on the now terribly errant Hooj Choons label was sure for a hit back in those days.

oh, and Olive did actually have a pretty big hit with a cover of 10CC's I'm Not In Love just last year.

cheers,
rents

rentboy, Tuesday, 1 October 2002 12:55 (twenty-three years ago)

SEARCH: "Battleflag" by the Low-Fidelity AllStars

DESTROY: "Moment of Weakness" by Bif Naked, "Freshmen" by the Verve Pipe, "Sex & Candy" by Marcy Playground, "Save Tonight" by Eagle-Eye Cherry, "Lullaby" by Shawn Mullins, "I Need to Know" by Marc Anthony,

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 13:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Lo Fis are more well known in the UK with a clutch of hits

Siegbran, the Freestylers biggest hit was 'B Boy Stance' - at least in the UK

Mr Oizo and Wamdue Project had at least one other hit with 'Analogue Worms Attack' and 'You're The Reason' respectively - tho they didnt do as well of course so fair enough

and rentboy - yeh i believe the Heartists track was Jaxx produced

blueski, Tuesday, 1 October 2002 13:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Marc Anthony - lots of hits here in Belgium, inexplicably.

Jeff W, Tuesday, 1 October 2002 13:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Eagle Eye Cherry was not a one-hit wonder. Tragic yet true...

Mr Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 13:36 (twenty-three years ago)

he VIRTUALLY is tho...as is the case with most of the acts listed...they've all released more than one single but they all only have one truly memorable hit - this is the casual definition of 'one hit wonder' as opposed to the literal definition (VERY RARE)

blueski, Tuesday, 1 October 2002 13:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Sex-O-Sonique were in fact Full Intention or Hustlers Convention or Greed. Hardly one-hit wonders, but it technical chart terms they were a pne-off and as a result a one-hit wonder.

cheers,
maksidrom

maksidrom, Tuesday, 1 October 2002 13:53 (twenty-three years ago)

check upthread, abt 10 posts. ;)

michael wells (michael w.), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 13:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, I know... I am still sleepy and I can't type, apparently... still, i did add extra info.

Anyway... unless we are talking about top 40 then a few more aren't strictly speaking one-hit wonders

Blue Boy 'Remember Me' - they had a minor hit with Sandman as well.
Slacker 'Scared' - Your Face and Psychout Thing were minor hits as well.
Wildchild 'Renegade Master' - minor hit with Bad Boy.
Brother Brown ft Franke 'Under The Water' - minor hit with Star Catching Girl.
Rob D 'Clubbed To Death' - had a minor hit with Furious Angels, not to mention his singles with Rollo.
Sia 'Taken For Granted' - erm... Drink To Get Drunk was a much bigger hit than Taken For Granted, methinks...

cheerio :-)
maksidrom

maksidrom, Tuesday, 1 October 2002 14:08 (twenty-three years ago)

wildchild passed away before he could have any more hits, didn't he? as well as 'bad boy' he had a minor hit with 'jump to my beat' which was remixed fantastically by todd edwards.

michael wells (michael w.), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 14:17 (twenty-three years ago)

and Tall Paul! yeh, forgot about that

Blue Boy's 'Sandman' ROOLS! at least one mix of it does...Slacker's 'Your Face' sampled Joanna Law and sounded very Way Out West i recall

blueski, Tuesday, 1 October 2002 22:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Maybe it's too early to damn her as a one-hit-wonder, but I love "They-Say Vision" by Res.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 23:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Alex: Not too early, too late- "Golden Boys" has had considerable success over here in Europe.

Daniel_Rf, Wednesday, 2 October 2002 00:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Europe doesn't know how to leave a good one-hit wonder alone; there is no reason Eiffel 65 should've had a successful followup.

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 04:46 (twenty-three years ago)

'move your body' was much better than 'blue', though. what about lonro of 'summer of love (comme ci comme ca)' fame?

michael wells (michael w.), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 08:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Lonyo had "Garage Girls" six months later.

Siegbran (eofor), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 12:53 (twenty-three years ago)

fuck this thread.

michael wells (michael w.), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 13:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Lou Bega - Mambo No 5
Sporty Thieves - No Pigeons
Venga Boys - We Like To Party
Vitamin C - Graduation
Bloodhound Gang - The Bad Touch
Crazy Town - Butterfly

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 14:36 (twenty-three years ago)

i stand by what i said in the above post. someone else can shoot the venga boys down.

michael wells (michael w.), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 14:39 (twenty-three years ago)

am I missing something, michael? what's wrong?

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 14:40 (twenty-three years ago)

sorry fritz.:) it's just that every example or fact or anything i've come up with in this thread has been shot down in flames within seconds. the venga boys have had *loads* of hits, weell, a few anyway. remember:
"up & down"
"boom boom boom"
"we're going to ibiza"
"uncle john from jamaica"?

michael wells (michael w.), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 14:49 (twenty-three years ago)

it's v. difficult to find genuine 'one-hit wonders' because most of them try for a follow-up. so every time someone gives an example someone else fires back "yeah, but they had a number 38 smash three months later". misses the point a little, don't you think?

michael wells (michael w.), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 14:53 (twenty-three years ago)

dont worry about it michael, its nothing personal ;)

however i must point out it was 'boom boom boom boom' by the Vengaboys, you're thinking of 'boom boom boom' by the Outhere Brothers...boy must your face be red...again! ;)

blueski, Wednesday, 2 October 2002 14:55 (twenty-three years ago)

hehe!

michael wells (michael w.), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 15:03 (twenty-three years ago)

you're dead when we get outside.

michael wells (michael w.), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 15:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Junior Jack is hardly a one hit wonder! I mean he's had that wicked remix of DJ D presents Hydraulic Dogs-Shake It Baby, also he's kind of Kid Kreme's best buddy and sometime collaborator, two names to watch.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 15:04 (twenty-three years ago)

well clearly there's no such thing as a one hit wonder

michael, bring it on girlfriend, bring it on

blueski, Wednesday, 2 October 2002 15:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, yeah in dance music anyway!

Also Scanty Sandwich DJs a bit and has a track with Jon Carter on Viva Bugged Out called "Need I Say More", it's a pretty fucking cool track too. But don't worry I didn't mean to pick holes in your list this much!

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 15:31 (twenty-three years ago)

its a very pickable list...i shouldve put it on a 'do not forsake these great dance tracks, you bastards' thread instead...or at least a 'virtual one hit wonders' one

Ronan did you ever hear this track Fatboy was caning a year or so ago which i think was by or at least remixed by Scanty Sandwich - it sampled Blondie's 'Rapture' and i think it was called 'Rock Chic' - complete and utter chown!

blueski, Wednesday, 2 October 2002 15:39 (twenty-three years ago)

You might be thinking of "Dj Spinnin" by Punk Chic. It's appalling.

edward o (edwardo), Friday, 4 October 2002 09:14 (twenty-three years ago)

The correction definition of a one hit wonder is a band that have a top ten single and then never have another top thirty ever, apparently.

On a side note, one of the Sporty Thievz is dead. He got hit by a van whilst walking out of a kebab shop.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 4 October 2002 09:35 (twenty-three years ago)

The correction definition of a one hit wonder is a band that have a top ten single and then never have another top thirty ever, apparently.

where d'you get that? mikereid.com?

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 4 October 2002 09:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Stuart Maconie's researcher.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 4 October 2002 09:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, joking aside, I bet Stuart Maconie has good 40 minute long opinions on every single fucking song mentioned in this thread.

"Oh aye, I remember Sweet Female Attitude. Female, they were. And, did they have funny hair..."

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 4 October 2002 10:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"yeah, venga boys but two of 'em were girls! and those blokes were a bit camp weren't they? haha!"

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 4 October 2002 10:04 (twenty-three years ago)

"Dj Spinnin" by Punk Chic

thats the one, but its not appalling, its bloody brilliant...at least a DJ like Norman Cook can make it sound bloody brilliant...what could possibly be wrong with it tho?

blueski, Friday, 4 October 2002 12:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Jimmy Ray - Are you Jimmy Ray?

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 4 October 2002 12:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Wasn't that Renegade Master hit a Norman Cook remix anyway?

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 4 October 2002 12:13 (twenty-three years ago)

That was the "Renegade Master '98" rerelease, in the Fat Boy Slim Old Skool Remix. I'm not sure if the original Wildchild "Renegade Master" from two? three? years earlier was a chart hit. It was a big club hit though. And what was the connection with Wildchild "Legends Of The Dark Black", was that the same track with a different name, or something else?

Siegbran (eofor), Friday, 4 October 2002 21:28 (twenty-three years ago)

yes the original release of 'Renegade Master' was a big hit, entered the UK charts at number 12 or thereabouts - its official title WAS indeed 'Legend Of The Dark Black' but of course everyone picked up on the 'Renegade Master' lyric which i believe is from Public Enemy but not sure

blueski, Saturday, 5 October 2002 18:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Jimmy Ray - Are you Jimmy Ray?

ARGH, the memories. Chesney Hawkes was more palatable (but only by microns).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 6 October 2002 03:52 (twenty-three years ago)

" Jimmy Ray - Are you Jimmy Ray? "

YES!!! that was awesome - did u see the video? he was so sexy

and dont forget the sneaker pimps!! even though i really love that album and its one of my non-guilty favs i cant deny that they were just a one-off with "six underground"

ps - remember republica?

ARGH again. Though when I recently reheard "Ready to Go" it didn't sting as much.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 6 October 2002 04:24 (twenty-three years ago)

"ARGH again. Though when I recently reheard "Ready to Go" it didn't sting as much."

after 4 years of jessica simpson/bbmak etc. on the radio, what did u expect?

V, Sunday, 6 October 2002 05:02 (twenty-three years ago)

I liked "You Get What You Give" by the New Radicals. I liked Harvey Danger too.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Sunday, 6 October 2002 19:17 (twenty-three years ago)

that new radicals song is awesome. i love that "boom boom boom boom" and "boom boom boom" are different songs.

dave k, Sunday, 6 October 2002 22:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Search: Mark Morrison-"Return of The Mack"

Colin Beckett (Colin Beckett), Monday, 7 October 2002 00:08 (twenty-three years ago)

That Harvey Danger song was brilliant, as was Republica. Give in to the Saffron, Ned! (Another song to play on the boom box on Thursday...)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 7 October 2002 02:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Give in to the Saffron, Ned! (Another song to play on the boom box on Thursday...)

If you bring a boom box with stuff like that and the fucking No Doubt album, you will RUIN A PERFECTLY GOOD MEAL. So don't. Thank you. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 7 October 2002 15:23 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
