Tempted to vote for "Bring The Noise" but then there's "Rent."

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 10 January 2013 03:23 (twelve years ago)

Rent would be my number two.

jim, Thursday, 10 January 2013 03:34 (twelve years ago)

I never remember having heard any of these Pete Shop Boys songs (though I suspect I would have heard some of them). Their music has never registered with me, and listening now I'm not surprised.

_Rudipherous_, Thursday, 10 January 2013 03:40 (twelve years ago)

I overlooked them for a long time. Neil's analysis of Rent is actually what got me listening to PSB.

jim, Thursday, 10 January 2013 03:50 (twelve years ago)

'Mats, without question.

Bring the Noise

NINO CARTER, Thursday, 10 January 2013 04:18 (twelve years ago)

impulsive vote for fairytale of new york

#guy #guy fieri #poop #hallway (zachlyon), Thursday, 10 January 2013 07:11 (twelve years ago)

plenty of great songs but Bring the Noise is untouchable

g simmel, Thursday, 10 January 2013 10:56 (twelve years ago)

Not the best list so far. It's between two rather different tunes for me - Fairytale and Acid Tracks.

I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Thursday, 10 January 2013 13:29 (twelve years ago)

Went with my heart over my head - Fairytale of New York it is.

I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Thursday, 10 January 2013 13:34 (twelve years ago)

"Strings of Life," then "Alex Chilton." Many other good ones. Missing my favourite Prince hit from the double.

clemenza, Thursday, 10 January 2013 13:42 (twelve years ago)

Geez, not to mention "What Have I done to Deserve This?"

clemenza, Thursday, 10 January 2013 13:44 (twelve years ago)

Bring The Noise, Strings of Life, Acid Tracks

impound the alarm (NickB), Thursday, 10 January 2013 13:47 (twelve years ago)

Even though the list features two of Prince's best singles (If I Was Your Girlfriend and U Got The Look), and Push It, and yes, Strings of Life, I couldn't possibly pass up on the rare opportunity for acknowledging Fingers Inc. featuring the music of Larry "Mr Fingers" Heard and the voice of Robert Owens, so I'm voting for Can You Feel It.

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 10 January 2013 23:24 (twelve years ago)

I think it's the weakest SOTT single and in the bottom half of quality for the album (probably the only songs on the album I like less are "IT" and "Slow Love")

Solange Knowles is my hero (DJP), Thursday, 10 January 2013 23:25 (twelve years ago)

also "If I Was Your Girlfriend" pwns massively, come on now

Solange Knowles is my hero (DJP), Thursday, 10 January 2013 23:26 (twelve years ago)

I'm finding this one extremely difficult!

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Friday, 11 January 2013 02:15 (twelve years ago)

the weakest SOTT single is easily the title track, and even this song is a B+

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 11 January 2013 02:30 (twelve years ago)

Bizarre, but it's been so long since I heard the title song, I can't even remember how it goes, beyond that it didn't have much instrumentation.

clemenza, Friday, 11 January 2013 02:43 (twelve years ago)

Bring The Noise, easy. Surprised there's nothing from Sonic Youth Sister.

kornrulez6969, Friday, 11 January 2013 02:52 (twelve years ago)

Fleetwood Mac's "Little Lies" or Lou Gramm's "Midnight Blue" not here, alas.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 11 January 2013 02:54 (twelve years ago)

This list is a lie.

Push It

Several great ones, but my heart said "Brilliant Disguise"

justfanoe (Greg Fanoe), Friday, 11 January 2013 03:43 (twelve years ago)

So much great stuff even left off this top 10

19 633 Salt 'n' Pepa - Push It
34 1713 Audio Two - Top Billin'
21 934 Prince - If I Was Your Girlfriend
16 621 Rhythim Is Rhythim - Strings of Life

9 372 Public Enemy - Rebel Without a Pause

27 1227 Fingers Inc. - Can You Feel It

The Reverend, Friday, 11 January 2013 03:51 (twelve years ago)

oh shit "Top Billin" is in there i didn't even see that

trey songza (some dude), Friday, 11 January 2013 03:59 (twelve years ago)

Between "Bring the Noise", "Strings of Life", and "Acid Tracks". What an incredible trio to choose from.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Friday, 11 January 2013 04:10 (twelve years ago)

so i'm voting "Just Like Heaven" mainly because i just heard it on the radio, it is fate. would have considered "Pump Up the Volume," "Birthday," "True Faith," "Faith," "Shine On," "Walkin' with Jesus" and "Fairytale of New York."

Bee OK, Saturday, 12 January 2013 02:52 (twelve years ago)

At first, when I looked at jjjusten's list, I was like thinkin... "Never Let Me Down"??? But then I realized it was Depeche, not Bowie. phew*.

"Sign O The Times" "U Got The Look" "I Know You Got Soul" (this has the best beat ever, right?) and about 15 others = whoa.

Gonna go "U Got The Look" though. I always like that one WAY more than I remember.

*though I kinda like that song

mr.raffles, Saturday, 12 January 2013 03:48 (twelve years ago)

Voted for PSB's 'It's A Sin'. I was obsessed with the song at the time. I only had a radio/cassette machine with a single tape deck, so every time it was played on the radio I would record it onto a tape that I'd set aside. I ended up with most of a C60 cassette with just 'It's A Sin' on it, interspersed with Bruno Brookes saying "op Boys!" or bits of 'La Isla Bonita' and whatever other singles were around at the time.

pure dressed up like a white ninja (snoball), Saturday, 12 January 2013 12:22 (twelve years ago)

out of the second 15 that would have to be "This Corrosion." i'm so much a Goth music wise...

Bee OK, Sunday, 13 January 2013 02:45 (twelve years ago)

ha yeah, that is much easier

Went with "Strings of Life" in the end. The prog techno choice perhaps?

EveningStar (Sund4r), Monday, 14 January 2013 00:45 (twelve years ago)

Yeah my choice too. Lamely learned about this from last year's Dirtbombs cover, still an awesome cut. Also <4 Never Let Me Down and Walkin with Jesus (which I almost voted for)

Drugs A. Money, Monday, 14 January 2013 01:34 (twelve years ago)

Lol @ <4

Drugs A. Money, Monday, 14 January 2013 01:34 (twelve years ago)

a few months back I saw Carl Craig and he dropped "Strings of Life" as the last song of the night while making air piano fingers up in the booth. it was epic as fuck.

The Reverend, Monday, 14 January 2013 08:05 (twelve years ago)

If we ever do 1971, I'll have some good stories about air-fluting to Jethro Tull.

clemenza, Monday, 14 January 2013 13:43 (twelve years ago)

'Birthday' and 'Sign 'O' the Times' and 'Paid In Full' probably my 3 favs but 'Nation Of Millions' changed what music I listened to forever more, so I'll go with 'Bring The Noise'

pandemic, Monday, 14 January 2013 13:50 (twelve years ago)

It seems like the quality of these lists really peaked in the 80s. Was there some kind of convergence of pop and critical consensus at that time? At what point did that fall off? The more recent years seem to be much more heavily slanted toward indie/NPR stuff.

what happened in the 80s = we were teenagers

DJP, Monday, 14 January 2013 14:47 (twelve years ago)

Sad to think of all of today's teenagers who are going to grow up nostalgic for terrible music.
