Starting this thread back up again for 2013; let's see if I can make more of an effort this time. Onward!

Some great stuff to kick off the New Year - new Blockheads and Cloud Rat for starters. And Nails have a three-song taster out this month for their forthcoming new album; they sound less grind than I remember but I'll have to relisten to Unsilent Death before making any judgements. What else are you grinding to this cold January?

wronger than 100 geir posts (MacDara), Thursday, 10 January 2013 08:49 (twelve years ago)

I love Nails but I've never thought of them as grind, more of a crusty UKHC (despite where they're from).

Troughton-masked Replicant (aldo), Thursday, 10 January 2013 10:39 (twelve years ago)

Downloaded Nolentia's May The Hand That Holds The Match That Will Set This World On Fire Be Blessed Above All but haven't listened to it yet.

Also, anybody who doesn't already have the Defeatist discography, they've put it all (three full-lengths - one of which compiles several EPs - and a split) on Bandcamp for pay-what-you-want. I interviewed Aaron Nichols of Defeatist back in 2011 - sharp, funny dude. They were a great band.

Duly bookmarked.

Haven't got much to add at the moment other than holy shit Infest are playing this weekend. Pity it's in LA though.

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Friday, 11 January 2013 09:00 (twelve years ago)

any newish grind releases that aren't Carcass-tribute goregrind, or Disrupt worship, maybe a little on the 'noisier' side?

been acquiring hella grind lately but almost all of it from the 90s, so I kinda wanna get some newer releases.

NINO CARTER, Friday, 11 January 2013 17:51 (twelve years ago)

maybe knelt rote?
http://nuclearwarnowproductions.bandcamp.com/album/insignificance
http://nuclearwarnowproductions.bandcamp.com/album/trespass

the sheer noisiness was what got my attention tho the latest one (trespass) probably leans more metal than ever.

anyone hear the d-clone record from last year? the review from the pissed jeans guy's blog got my attention but I still haven't checked it out:

SeanWayne, Friday, 11 January 2013 18:28 (twelve years ago)

new Rotten Sound coming... I think Decibel already reviewed it. Oh, and new Misery Index.

my frends band, AUGURS. Have done only 3 shows and only just released this demo via their bandcamp, already getting flooded with indie labels interested. They've changed their name 5 times since starting, but they are sticking with AUGURS.. lol

Very disappointed that the new Misery Index is a) a live album and b) only 10 tracks.

I've just written a review for the new Blockheads but it won't be online for a couple of days. If you like Nasum and Rotten Sound you'll dig it, I think.

wronger than 100 geir posts (MacDara), Friday, 11 January 2013 19:12 (twelve years ago)

not from the bay, just said 'hella' for som reason, lol.

that sounds good Mac, I love Nasum

NINO CARTER, Friday, 11 January 2013 19:13 (twelve years ago)

anyone hear the d-clone record from last year?

yeah it owns. so much of that Japanese or would-be Japanese noise punk stuff sounds tinny and halfassed but the production on this is perfect

Gay for Johnny Depp? Maybe more "grind-ish" than "grind" but noisy as fuck for sure

Digging this one by French fastcore band Yattai I just heard via Grind to Death: http://yattai.bandcamp.com/album/fast-music-means-love

I need to take a day soon just to go through all the grind-related links and recommendations I have.

While I'm here, the new Call of the Void record on Relapse is really good. Doom grind I'd call it, like a sludgy Uphill Battle.

wronger than 100 geir posts (MacDara), Tuesday, 12 March 2013 14:44 (twelve years ago)

Yeah, I've been digging that Call of the Void quite a bit. Doom grind is a pretty good description.

i kant believe it's not buffon (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 12 March 2013 16:26 (twelve years ago)

Liking Baptists' "Bushcraft." Wouldn't say there's anything too original on display (although there are some nicely weird guitar touches) but executed with a lot of conviction and clear, direct production. I like the fast ones better than the doomy ones (the album starts with one of the weakest tracks, imho).

summervillain, Wednesday, 13 March 2013 13:07 (twelve years ago)

I reviewed the Baptists record last month. I dig it a lot too, though I wouldn't class it at grind - not enough blastbeats! Much more Convergy than anything else, but as I wrote that isn't a bad thing.

wronger than 100 geir posts (MacDara), Wednesday, 13 March 2013 13:33 (twelve years ago)

Bushcraft is one of my favorites of the year so far, like Converge's scrappier younger brother. Very well executed album.

anonanon, Wednesday, 13 March 2013 14:23 (twelve years ago)

I agree, the new Baptists is great.

for a grind(ish) album, it manages to have a lot of insanely, catchy melodic riffs. Plus, the name....

Thanks for the thread revival/reminder!

I'll be reviewing the new Mumakil at some point (I know it's out in a week or so, where does the time go?). I'm also digging an Irish doom/grind/crust/death band called Okus, who have their debut S/T up on Bandcamp here.

wronger than 100 geir posts (MacDara), Friday, 21 June 2013 07:40 (twelve years ago)

A few things going on in London I might be going to:

13th July - Despise You
10th August - Bleh fest (Magrudergrind, Atrocity Exhibit)
22nd Sept - Hammer-Smashed fest (Brutal Truth, Extreme Noise Terror)

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Friday, 21 June 2013 08:19 (twelve years ago)

Brutal Truth are great live. I saw them in 2010.

Dan Lilker sold me a BT hoodie that seems to have been made in a sweatshop, and leaves nasty black residue over any clothes you're wearing underneath.

He also gave me back incorrect change, but I was so awestruck at meeting Dan Lilker that I didn't notice right away.

Also, I should probably start a new thread for 2014? Or maybe just ask a mod to knock the year off the title?

http://cutnpasteyoface.blogspot.com/2014/01/pretty-little-flower.html:

Houston, Texas' Pretty Little Flower ( P.L.F.) is an unrelenting grind outfit that's been melting faces since 1998. This band constructs music that's loaded with manic and complex thrash riffs that mix with intense and violent drum bursts with blown out bass chaos throughout. This crushing display of grindcore is simply amazing and with the added element of crossover-thrash it's even more of a plus to hear. Get hooked on these guys if you haven't already. Snag everything I could find below and DIG!

Gridlink! still rules

anonanon, Wednesday, 25 June 2014 02:14 (eleven years ago)

I was gonna start a 2014 thread but I got lazy.

Yeah, the GridLink is still my favourite grind of the year so far. I liked The Drip one but I didn't stand out for me, but I'll be listening again. I've got a promo of Brutal Blues but I haven't listened to it yet. Also awaiting the Columns records coming out soon.

wronger than 100 geir posts (MacDara), Wednesday, 25 June 2014 07:36 (eleven years ago)

I thought this sick/tired lp was fun:
https://sick-tired.bandcamp.com/album/king-of-dirt-12-lp

but the gridlink outclasses it by several orders of magnitude. that's my fave for the year as well, no surprises there (tho I can't say I've been following things super closely either).

original bgm, Wednesday, 25 June 2014 15:37 (eleven years ago)

Not sure it 100% fits in this thread, but the Electric Funeral reissue/compilation on Southern Lord is great. One-man D-beat soaked in so much fuzz and feedback it'll give you a brain tumor.

Humorist (horse) (誤訳侮辱), Wednesday, 25 June 2014 15:53 (eleven years ago)

I just downloaded the Electric Funeral thing; haven't listened yet but the shortness of the track lengths has impressed me already.

wronger than 100 geir posts (MacDara), Wednesday, 25 June 2014 22:22 (eleven years ago)

Longhena is basically the first grind record I've gotten super into. I've enjoyed Napalm Death and stuff in the past, but I never replayed them to the point where the songs really opened up and revealed themselves. It's cool when something that initially sounds like a blur of noise becomes clear and enunciated with further listens.

Yeah that's really good - I was worried with the tinniness of the drums and the lack of bass heft on the first track, but I have to say the sound really grew on me. Helps that the music's interesting, not just tap-tap-tap-blast-BUZZZZZZZ-GAHHHHHHRGH!

wronger than 100 geir posts (MacDara), Wednesday, 30 July 2014 20:17 (eleven years ago)

doesn't *strictly* fit the column but the new Pig Heart Transplant sounds blistering. all the songs are (iirc) 48 seconds long which leads to some unsatisfying curtailments but apart from that. some of it might be streamable at ironlungpv.bandcamp.com

Did anyone hear this Tellusian album, Collision? http://tellusian.bandcamp.com/

I'm really liking it. It's proggy and melodic, not all that intense, with lots of noodly bass and catchy riffs that don't take up too much space. "Wolf in Sheep's Medicine" is what grabbed me first.

I was looking for more weird techy grindcore. This is extremely far from Gridlink, but good stuff too, though to be honest it sounds as much like shortened DM to me.

I'm looking for noisy crust stuff, anyone have any suggestions? Like I was listening to Warpriest and they have some great moments of weird noisiness and one brief instrumental that almost hits Buzzoven territory before it fades out. I guess I'm looking for sort of slightly sludgy crust stuff that doesn't get entirely hung up in slow tempos. Also just general noisiness is a plus.
