From a movie I flat out NEVER heard of before today from the mid-nineties called Vibrations:
“Suburban rock guitarist gets in an accident and has both hands amputated. Becomes homeless, moves to SF, passes out in a warehouse which is used for a rave later that night. Wakes up, befriends raver girl (Christina Applegate!!), gets cyborg hands made by a “hacker” and his rave mc friend, dresses up like Robocop and plays scales on a midi keyboard live which apparently is the “ultimate” rave music because it has more notes than normal rave music.”

There’s also supposedly a Utah Saints performance which is cut from the US release of the film, but is on a region free Hong Kong DVD.

By the way, is the E word ever mentioned in this movie?

“The idea is to get the vibe going. Then you maintain the vibe with a trance inducing bass and the right lights. We’re primal, heading for cosmic, and just when you think we’re in galactic ecstasy, we go acid. It’s hardcore nutronic mutilation. Now we get serious. See, we’re going on a psychotically calibrated and electronically executed, digitally compressed, pus-excreting journey to sonic grooviness! The world is coming to an end, but we don’t care, because we’re moon-tan nocturnal, vinyl consuming animals drifting easy through friendly space. An analog trance, nothing can doom this groove; we’re controlling the vibe, manipulating the madness, sucking in the energy and we’ve cosmic nerving endings, telling us how to move, what to do, where to go and then we know, that it’s time to let go!”

Have this on in the background while taking care of some things -- the guy who runs the rave location has an office in which the largest poster is for the Shamen's Boss Drum. Which is both perfectly wrong AND right.
― Ned Raggett, Friday, 11 January 2013 04:55 (twelve years ago)
Oh and at one point there's a tour flyer:
R*** TOUR--UTAH SAINTSSVEN VÄTHU-96FIERCE RULING DIVAMOSES ON ACIDCYBERSTORM
CALL 1-800-555-RAVE
--
As you do.
― Ned Raggett, Friday, 11 January 2013 05:48 (twelve years ago)
Oh and after a montage it eventually shows Cyberstorm at the top of new flyers. Of course none of these flyers look a thing like actual flyer art of the time.
― Ned Raggett, Friday, 11 January 2013 05:52 (twelve years ago)
historical note: you can tell it's not a real flyer by the 555 prefix

― Matt DC, Friday, 12 April 2013 15:17 (twelve years ago)
EXCLUSIVE: 20th Century Fox has acquired an untitled pitch that will be built around the Electronic Dance Music craze, and will involve one of its biggest stars, Diplo. The film will be written by Adam Weinstock and Andy Jones, and Underground’s Trevor Engelson is producing. Noah Rothman is exec producer. Underground is teamed with Diplo and his business partner Kevin Kusatsu, both of whom are exec producers. The pic’s described as 8 Mile meets Project X in tone, as three teens try to get into Diplo’s Electronic Music Festival. Weinstock and Jones are represented by CAA and Underground.
EDM, which I gather is a cousin to rave music, is a huge industry where the DJs are the big stars. Hollywood is waking up to its appeal, and this becomes one of several films to take root with EDM as its backdrop.
