I don't own the album but "Yankee Rose" is awesome.

...and after PiL's Album the only decent context for Steve Vai

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 16 January 2013 03:38 (twelve years ago)

Tobacco Road, no second thoughts. I'd vote for Yankee Rose if we were polling the Spanish language version.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 16 January 2013 03:40 (twelve years ago)

I started this poll because, surprisingly, there isn't even a thread on this album yet! When it comes down to the initial split between Van Halen and David Lee Roth, I side with Roth when it comes to a choice between this album and 5150. I personally find it far more fun to listen to, and it's not short of musicality either. I don't know about anyone else, but I feel this contains some of Steve Vai's most tasteful playing.

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Wednesday, 16 January 2013 03:42 (twelve years ago)

Steve Vai is decent on some mediocre Zappa records, too. And stunningly good on the live Buffalo archival release the Zappa Family Trust put out a few years ago.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 16 January 2013 03:42 (twelve years ago)

I haven't heard the Spanish language version, is it worth hearing? Voted for 'Goin' Crazy!'...

RoboVai! Nuking evil villains with flashy widdly guitar solos!

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Wednesday, 16 January 2013 03:48 (twelve years ago)

Weird that I never hear any solo Roth on the radio, ever.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 16 January 2013 03:52 (twelve years ago)

He seems to hardly feature on rock compilations, either. Although I think I saw 'Just Like Paradise' on one once, but that's it...

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Wednesday, 16 January 2013 03:54 (twelve years ago)

The Spanish version is a fun oddity, if not much more. Worth hearing if you like this album.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 16 January 2013 03:55 (twelve years ago)

dunno about satellite eadio, but yeah, I never hear this or Just Like Paradise anymore. Van Halen won the sales and PR war after 1988

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 16 January 2013 04:03 (twelve years ago)

Love this album. Voted predictably but really no duds here except maybe "That's Life"

If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Wednesday, 16 January 2013 08:21 (twelve years ago)

"Shy Boy" because I gotta give some love to Talas who originally recorded it...

Here is the actual best context for Vai's playing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TjHR-SI7Bv0

Three Word Username, Wednesday, 16 January 2013 14:16 (twelve years ago)

I read somewhere that they did "Shy Boy" in order to cement Billy Sheehan joining the band. Steve and Dave had already written most of the record and Billy wanted some publishing money from album sales.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 16 January 2013 14:30 (twelve years ago)

Goin' Crazy was the song that immediately came to mind, so I voted that, but I suspect Yankee Rose may actually be a better tune.

Was Carmine Appice in this band, too, or did I dream that?

Darin, Wednesday, 16 January 2013 16:28 (twelve years ago)

dreaming, I believe. Gregg Bissonette was the drummer on this record.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 16 January 2013 16:33 (twelve years ago)

Oh right...

Anyway, Carmine Appice and Tom Savini are the same person, true or false?

I always tried to get into Vai solo but I only ever really dug him with DLR
I appreciate him, but all that guitar flash gets kinda boring on its own? Kinda like drum solos. Like, that's cool but can I have the rest of the song now plz

Those DLR-interviews are genius.

Marty8501 (Marty Innerlogic), Wednesday, 16 January 2013 20:12 (twelve years ago)

I've been watching quite a fair amount of DLR interviews on Youtube recently... I don't think I've ever been as entertained watching anyone else being interviewed ever. You can pretty much guarantee in every interview he'll say either something which will be so WTF you'll laugh out loud, or say something so incredibly and unexpectedly thoughtful that you'll think "where the hell did that come from?"...

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Wednesday, 16 January 2013 20:37 (twelve years ago)

There are a bunch of clips from the bizarre No Holds Bar-B-Q thing he sent out on VHS back in 2002 or thereabouts (I got a copy in the mail, but didn't hold onto it)...not the whole thing, though.

誤訳侮辱, Wednesday, 16 January 2013 20:45 (twelve years ago)

Yeah, that's got to have been one of his more bizarre ideas!

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Wednesday, 16 January 2013 21:26 (twelve years ago)

I think I still have my VHS copy... Haven't watched in years though.

Loud guitars shit all over "Bette Davis Eyes" (NYCNative), Wednesday, 16 January 2013 21:33 (twelve years ago)

or say something so incredibly and unexpectedly thoughtful that you'll think "where the hell did that come from?"...

He's a ravenous bookworm, from what I've heard. And only someone truly brilliant could come up with the brown M&M solution to safe concert staging.

Tarfumes The Escape Goat, Wednesday, 16 January 2013 21:45 (twelve years ago)

he's a bookworm?!

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 16 January 2013 21:47 (twelve years ago)

Yeah, I think it was in an AV Club interview (I'll have to look for it) where he went on and on about how much he loves to read.

Tarfumes The Escape Goat, Wednesday, 16 January 2013 21:52 (twelve years ago)

Someone makes an attempt at compiling various witty quotes from Roth interviews here

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 16 January 2013 22:50 (twelve years ago)

That's the one. I'd like to see Hagar reference Kant and Kurosawa.

Tarfumes The Escape Goat, Wednesday, 16 January 2013 22:59 (twelve years ago)

I've watched so many Roth interviews recently that I'm actually reading this in his voice. When I got to this bit...

I revere contact sports and history, both classic and popular, and I participate in these things constantly. You know, in the Bible it doesn't say, "Waddle forth and calcify." That sounds like a legal firm!

I actually fucking cracked up laughing!

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Wednesday, 16 January 2013 23:24 (twelve years ago)

Steve Vai is the worst in pretty much any context. He also seems like the sort of dude who totally wouldn't get why someone thinks he sucks, and in fact would probably demonstrate his not-suckiness by just doing more of what makes someone thinks he sucks, only faster.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 17 January 2013 00:07 (twelve years ago)

but he can make his guitar make laughing sounds!

Steve Vai is one of the few "guitar heroes" that don't bore the shit out of me.
Take those lightning fast Yngwie Malmsteen chops and have fun with that. All a yawnfest as far as I am concerned.

i was really hoping that when Vai was telling Bissonette all the stuff that would probably happen soon (#1 videos, magazine covers), the anecdote would end with..."aaaand none of that happened, but i still got to play with DLR."
