I'd love to hear anyone name a more influential 80's independent label for experimental music. Though many of the records in their first 50 were reissues, Recommended had a curational focus that kept these records in print through the dark ages of the 80's -- ReR is one of the biggest reasons why we now take these records for granted as classics. Growing up in the 80's, Cutler's handwritten / typewritten distribution catalogs with lengthy and frequently critical reviews of each of the albums were some kind of annual bible.

Who knows what kind of results this will get, I just wanted to see a bunch of these titles all lined up. Dates given are for date of the ReR reissue, not of original release. The post-90's list is very very subjective and missing dozens of amazing albums, and I dropped or simply lost track of many other vital 80's ones while cobbling this together from 3-4 scattered online archives, but this gives a sense of the range

/sp, The Last Nightingale (Miners Strike Benefit EP)

(and of course, more than one miner was striking - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Last_Nightingale)

Milton Parker, Thursday, 17 January 2013 20:39 (twelve years ago)

oh wow, what a poll (I voted Faust So Far)

frogbs, Thursday, 17 January 2013 20:39 (twelve years ago)

what's that Jon Rose album like? I only have the Fences one and the China one?

sarahell, Thursday, 17 January 2013 20:40 (twelve years ago)

only know a fraction of these, prob the obv 'hits', but even so it is v v difficult to choose between Faust, This Heat, the Homosexuals alone.

will prob vote for Horde, tho', in case it doesn't get enough love.

Ward Fowler, Thursday, 17 January 2013 20:43 (twelve years ago)

The Sampler, just because it stood on its own as well as leading me to so many other good records---and more good artists than the other good records on here, which mostly had me checking out closely related (These Fausts led to more by Faust, Henry Cow to later Frith etc)

dow, Thursday, 17 January 2013 20:44 (twelve years ago)

I feel like it's cheating somehow to vote for Sun Ra (maybe because he and the Arkestra already had an established history well ahead of Recommended Records), but of the ones I'm sure I've heard, that's the one I have the most time for. Or I could vote for After Dinner for personal reasons.

_Rudipherous_, Thursday, 17 January 2013 20:54 (twelve years ago)

not cheating to vote for Sun Ra -- by the early 80's it was getting harder to find some of the peak-era live shows, so when Cutler put out one of the best possible albums to make a first impression in a beautiful edition, it was about context: http://www.discogs.com/viewimages?release=1178926

hey gosh it's ground-zero playing Revolutionary Pekinese Opera live in 1995: opening, red mao book by sony

and a Haniwa song from right after Wha Ha Ha morphed into the All-Stars

Milton Parker, Thursday, 17 January 2013 20:58 (twelve years ago)

gosh, Milton, it would be amazing if a link to that Dumitrescu magically appeared on this thread

sarahell, Thursday, 17 January 2013 21:01 (twelve years ago)

gotta make sure SLAPP HAPPY + FAUST gets at least one vote, although the homosexuals and this heat and (other) faust records are at least as good/important!

69, Thursday, 17 January 2013 21:04 (twelve years ago)

so much to choose from here, but i'll vote for arcane device since it's the one i listened to most recently.

les yper-fem (get bent), Thursday, 17 January 2013 21:07 (twelve years ago)

i keep going back to bob drake and he keeps amazing me

massaman gai, Thursday, 17 January 2013 21:10 (twelve years ago)

xp - I think the Avram one is the only one I have. My music library is pretty disorganized however.

sarahell, Thursday, 17 January 2013 21:13 (twelve years ago)

Acnalbasac Noom vs. Deceit, very tough choice.

some of the great sleepers here are the Boris Kovacs, Kalahari Surfers, Musci/Venosta, EC Nudes, and Biota.

sleeve, Thursday, 17 January 2013 22:51 (twelve years ago)

The Peter Blegvad record is wonderful. But, yeah, I only know a handful of these.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Thursday, 17 January 2013 23:46 (twelve years ago)

Can't choose between Dumitrescu and AMM. Shamefully, haven't heard that Sun Ra.

Tarfumes The Escape Goat, Friday, 18 January 2013 00:24 (twelve years ago)

So much great stuff on this list, ReR is maybe my favourite label ever.

it's all fuck what sit says, we'll do our own thing (Matt #2), Friday, 18 January 2013 00:45 (twelve years ago)

hard for me not to vote for THE FAUST TAPES tbh, that album opened so many doors for me

of some of the more obscure ones, i have and love the listed albums by News From Babel (who were Dagmar & Lindsay & Zeena & Cutler iirc) and also Fat (skronky Canadians, hard to categorise but maybe a bit like a low key Last Exit?)

a la recherche du tempbans perdu (NickB), Friday, 18 January 2013 00:45 (twelve years ago)

Katzer / Krauze / Kreck - Aide Memoire
This is pretty unknown but really good, undefinable modern composition.

Kampec Dolores were another of their hidden treasure bands, not mentioned here but their album Zúgó (Rapid) is well worth hearing if you like The Ex, This Heat or Márta Sebestyén.

it's all fuck what sit says, we'll do our own thing (Matt #2), Friday, 18 January 2013 00:54 (twelve years ago)

TOO HARD.

The Fausts, Acnalbasac Noom, or the World as it is Today. With Deceit a very strong contender but knocked out in the semi-finals.

I have Work Resumed on the Tower by News from Babel but held off buying the second one of theirs as it was £30 and only had Dagmar on one or two tracks...

emil.y, Friday, 18 January 2013 04:55 (twelve years ago)

Also The Homosexuals were bloody great.

emil.y, Friday, 18 January 2013 04:57 (twelve years ago)

Also AMM & Christian Marclay. Argh.

emil.y, Friday, 18 January 2013 04:58 (twelve years ago)

alternate poll title: faust v. this heat

༼•̃͡ ɷ•̃͡༽ (am0n), Friday, 18 January 2013 06:48 (twelve years ago)

Maybe for the top spot, but the runner ups are going to be a lot more interesting, my inner 15 year old should vote Faust Tapes but I've been listening to other ones a lot more often in the years since

>I have Work Resumed on the Tower by News from Babel but held off buying the second one of theirs as it was £30 and only had Dagmar on one or two tracks...

Yeah that Robert Wyatt guy on the five other tracks, he's no Dagmar

Milton Parker, Friday, 18 January 2013 07:32 (twelve years ago)

Was Fat's other lp Hit on These not Recommended or something? Would vote for that if it was there. Wish they'd reissue it on cd, I've missed it heavily since I lost my vinyl copy and don't really have theset up to play vinyl anymore.

Stevolende, Friday, 18 January 2013 11:27 (twelve years ago)

o man! ...o boy:(
still haven't heard a lot of titles on that list.
but voted anyhoo;)

t**t, Friday, 18 January 2013 13:12 (twelve years ago)

Yeah that Robert Wyatt guy on the five other tracks, he's no Dagmar

He isn't! Though tbh I don't think I clocked that Wyatt was on it, I was just looking for the Dagi credits.

emil.y, Saturday, 19 January 2013 00:14 (twelve years ago)

xxp Yes Fat's Hit was on These. Great record!

This is a painful tossup between Winter Songs and AMMMusic for me.

Thinspo Merkin Life (Spectrist), Saturday, 19 January 2013 00:18 (twelve years ago)

a low key Last Exit!? I can't imagine, will have to check--thsnks for the intriguing mention. The Homosexuals box is pretty sweet too (no "package" jokes plz)(well if you must)

dow, Saturday, 19 January 2013 00:19 (twelve years ago)

Umm yeah, i was probably mostly thinking about their other album (the aforementioned Hit) when i wrote that. it's a bit more driving than Automat iirc, and it's got the Borbetomagus horn guys on it to supplement the tightly-wound guitar playing

a la recherche du tempbans perdu (NickB), Saturday, 19 January 2013 00:24 (twelve years ago)

just heard the new Cassiber compilation of live shows / rehearsals / studio jams, 'The Way It Was' -- essentially a greatest hits, but made out of much rawer takes on the familiar pieces. this was an interesting band, the improvisations with samplers & tapes were way way ahead of their time in the early 80's. the early records are verrrrry loose and emphasize the freeform, at the time my favorite of their four was 'Perfect Worlds' because they really managed to cook it all down onto a compact pop record that time but I'm looking forward to the box set this year

nine years pass...

They have another £5 a shot sale on in RERmegacorp with some good titles in .
Had me looking up Kalahari Surfers which lead me to this thread.
Think I may have a best of that I need to find.
Did get some good titles though.
2 Sun Ras
A Live Campec Dolores
Camberwell Now
& Kew Rhone
also Faust's Ravivando which I really should already have.
