'Your Funny Uncle'.

I love these b-sides to death actually; some of the best music PSB put together

(voted "Don Juan")

Among four of my favourite PSBs b-sides - "Your Funny Uncle" is the apex of their pathos, "Don Juan" of their gnomic European-history-as-pop, "The Sound of the Atom Splitting" of their getting messy with the avant-garde guts of 80s dance technology, and "One Of The Crowd" of deadpan/flat dancefloor-as-leveller.
I once found a karaoke place which had "One Of The Crowd"; I'm about Chris Lowe's vocal range so was v.happy though my friends were nonplussed.
Should see if I can find my copy of Alternative, the interview notes for these tracks were excellent.

I've listened to these a great deal more than anything off Introspective.

^^^^ TRUTH

even the Introspective tracks I dig ("It's Alright", "I Want A Dog") exist elsewhere in different, vastly superior mixes

Bel-Air the Fresh Prince, sitting in a chair (DJP), Friday, 18 January 2013 22:06 (twelve years ago)

could never stomach the album version of "It's Alright" -- the only blemish on a perfect album.

These four B-sides distil their genius rather well, don't they? Everything you could want from them.

the 7" version of "It's Alright" is amazing, though

Bel-Air the Fresh Prince, sitting in a chair (DJP), Friday, 18 January 2013 22:11 (twelve years ago)

THAT'S the version I prefer

Between Don Juan and Your Funny Uncle for me. Don Juan is the only one that could pass for a "normal" PSB track (whatever that means). There's a novelty element to Atom and Crowd; they lose some of their charm the second or third time around. When the novelty of Uncle wears off, it's still one of Neil's great songwriting achievements. I'm a sucker for old-fashioned songcraft, I guess.

and it IS a Neil Tennant Song: he played and programmed the song himself.

Has to be 'Your Funny Uncle' for I

'Separate Lives', by Phil Collins & Marilyn Manson (PaulTMA), Friday, 18 January 2013 22:17 (twelve years ago)

kind of unfair that tricky chronology wrt single releases kept "I Get Excited (You Get Excited Too)" off of this poll

Bel-Air the Fresh Prince, sitting in a chair (DJP), Friday, 18 January 2013 22:17 (twelve years ago)

Neil: ".. the song attempts an Edith Sitwell use of words: 'an impasse has been reached with the teacher of the rich'. It's like someone coming to their senses: throughout all this decadence and complex language, they have this flash of complete reason."
Chris: "Then it goes into a bit which is like 'Flashdance (What A Feeling)'."

the liner notes to Alternative are a thing of glory

Bel-Air the Fresh Prince, sitting in a chair (DJP), Friday, 18 January 2013 22:46 (twelve years ago)

I prefer the 7" version of 'It's Alright' to the Introspective version, and the Introspective version of 'I Want A Dog' to the B-side.

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Friday, 18 January 2013 22:53 (twelve years ago)

We are as one.

I tear up everytime I listen to "Your Funny Uncle". He just describes it so well. And the melody is gorgeous too.

LeRooLeRoo, Saturday, 19 January 2013 00:24 (twelve years ago)

your funny uncle really is a heartbreaking work of staggering genius

jabba hands, Saturday, 19 January 2013 00:58 (twelve years ago)

Even Lowe recognized it. I love how in the Alternative interviews he admits to admiring Neil for not cracking up when attending the funeral and reciting the poem to which the lyric alludes.

your funny uncle. all day every day.

Gukbe, Saturday, 19 January 2013 01:25 (twelve years ago)

yeah the It's Alright 7 inch is mindblowing. technically i guess the Introspective mix of I Want A Dog is really Frankie Knuckles' work as much as PSB's.
