time to choose the best song from the sst "duck and cover" compilation

Which is your favorite song from this compilation, and why.

Is it the song? The band? The band's interpretation of the song? Try to come up with a good reason why you are not voting for Eight Miles High, which is clearly the best song in all of the above ways (even though lots of them are really super good, like both horse songs and let's face it, basically every song in one way or another)

voting for "the light pours out of me" even though i've never heard the trotsky icepick version. i just love that song.

is the Descendents one the version off the live album where he says HAMBURGERS at the end

▼ardkore mort▼ (DJ Mencap), Monday, 21 January 2013 08:50 (twelve years ago)

Is that the Double Nickels version of Ain't Talking Bout Love? Looks like it from the track length. Shame if it is, cos the version on Blasting Concept Vol 2 is amazing.

We had this one class at school called 'All Kinds Of Popular Music' and that was the song I brought in one week :)

a la recherche du tempbans perdu (NickB), Monday, 21 January 2013 09:51 (twelve years ago)

Obviously it must have been the greatest song that had ever been played in that class because the teacher was pretty much speechless when the song finished.

a la recherche du tempbans perdu (NickB), Monday, 21 January 2013 09:51 (twelve years ago)

too bad slovenly's "a year with no head" isn't on here. kind of meh on most of these, ps congrats huskers.

son of telegram sam (Edward III), Monday, 21 January 2013 14:52 (twelve years ago)

huskers or flag.

the actual studio "just like heaven" sounds pretty weak to me compared to a lot of the live versions from 88 to 90 (ish) floating around out there.

no HAMBURGERS, I'm afraid

seriously? that's your favorite cover out of all of these? i'll accept an explanation before you gtfo...

this customer is a jerk (La Lechera), Monday, 21 January 2013 15:34 (twelve years ago)

i had this on cassette in my car for years and years, just like an old friend, and every single time Eight Miles High ended and I heard two notes of GGMM, I felt like I was getting slapped awake. It's so unpleasant!

this customer is a jerk (La Lechera), Monday, 21 January 2013 15:36 (twelve years ago)

See for me this cover of GGMM is the last track of an awesome EP (Out My Way) so it's like a well-earned goof off session for the Pups rather than an isolated irritation. (NB I am assuming this GGMM is the same one that ends Out My Way, maybe it's a different recording?)

That would explain it -- imagine if this was the only Meat Puppets song you had ever heard. You would prob hate it too! It's so annoying!

this customer is a jerk (La Lechera), Monday, 21 January 2013 15:44 (twelve years ago)

Like if the only Huskers song you had ever heard was the baby song

i don't have this comp, so i only know the handful of tracks where i own the band's album. i like the Meat Puppets' take on it, though, i think it's suitably deranged.

the legend of bigger yansh (some dude), Monday, 21 January 2013 15:49 (twelve years ago)

Aggggghhhh the baby song should be burned. Still, even if you love the MP with superhuman strength, how could that be the best song on this compilation?

This is mostly just like the original, but Crazy Horses!

Also seems like if there's a default choice for goofy oldies it should be Louie Louie, not GGMM.

this customer is a jerk (La Lechera), Monday, 21 January 2013 15:52 (twelve years ago)

Or Baby It's You -- that one is always good.

this customer is a jerk (La Lechera), Monday, 21 January 2013 15:53 (twelve years ago)

to be clear, GGMM is not my fave on this list. It's minutemen or huskers for me. But Up on the Sun is just about my favorite thing SST ever put out so I got my advocate's robe on

consistency is the owlbear of small minds (Jon Lewis), Monday, 21 January 2013 15:55 (twelve years ago)

"Six Pack" by Sac Trust if only for Brewer's intro banter..."[Black Flag] don't even know what beer even fucking tastes like"

chr1sb3singer, Monday, 21 January 2013 16:06 (twelve years ago)

It's not as gd as the Sac Trust versh of 'Peace Frog', tho

Also missing: 'Doctor Wu' by the Minutemen

Ward Fowler, Monday, 21 January 2013 16:19 (twelve years ago)

Dr Wu, now, that could maybe beat 8 Miles High for me.

the Black Flag version of Louie Louie is one of the canonical Louies - who needs love when you've got a gun?

sarahell, Tuesday, 12 February 2013 00:10 (twelve years ago)

Who needs love to have any fun?!
That's why I ended this poll on Valentine's Day week!! Now you know my secret.

and that sounds like a gong-concert (La Lechera), Tuesday, 12 February 2013 00:39 (twelve years ago)

kinda shocking to me that there's not more love for 8 miles high here. that defined the feeling of something emerging at my high school - I'd hear it on college radio and feel like something new was happening, something that, for once, we weren't going to have to hear about in the NME first.

available for sporting events (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Tuesday, 12 February 2013 00:59 (twelve years ago)

i voted for it! i already loved the byrds version when i heard the dü version and it was like a magical gift from noise heaven -- that's why GGMM sounded so awful right afterward.

and that sounds like a gong-concert (La Lechera), Tuesday, 12 February 2013 01:12 (twelve years ago)

Aero I think the reason ppl aren't talking more abt 8 Miles High is bc everyone assumes it's gonna win so no advocacy required. Like I p much know I have to vote for it if I'm voting my conscience but my performative self keeps telling me to vote for something less obvious.

We should poll The Blasting Concept next...

try a little crowleymass (Jon Lewis), Tuesday, 12 February 2013 01:41 (twelve years ago)

...which would essentially be "Erase Today" vs. "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love."

(wait, was that volume II?)

Tarfumes The Escape Goat, Tuesday, 12 February 2013 13:55 (twelve years ago)

yeah, that was volume II, which also had the meat pups doing a shitty cover on it. overall that album was amazing though! even dc3 and swa were okay on that

haha Boris WIlliams got more votes than "Baby It's You" -- that's unfortunate, but I think the results are fair

OVERWHELMINGLY fair

happy valentine's day everyone.

I don't think it's fair at all. "Eight Miles High" should've gotten ALL the votes. For everything. Ever.
