Snoopy for me. Too many great childhood memories attached to it. It's a shame Johnny Horton's "The Battle Of New Orleans" isn't on here. And where is "Purple People Eater"? Shame.

Still, this is a pretty great collection.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 21 January 2013 22:12 (twelve years ago)

Surfin' Bird or Mah-Na-Mah-Na, but don't want to trivialise Surfin' Bird's vibe as "goofy" (though it is!), so Mah-Na-Mah-Na takes it

a panda, Malmö (a passing spacecadet), Monday, 21 January 2013 22:13 (twelve years ago)

You need Funky Favorites & Looney Tunes for all the jams: http://www.retrohound.com/k-tel-and-ronco-goofy-greats-funky-favorites-and-looney-tunes/#.UP296cjiFTY

brio, Monday, 21 January 2013 22:16 (twelve years ago)

Surfin' Bird is pretty much the pinnacle of Western Civilization

Euler, Monday, 21 January 2013 22:32 (twelve years ago)

1. "Yummy Yummy Yummy," 2. "Green Tambourine," 3. "The Name Game." I'm sure "Surfin' Bird" will win.

clemenza, Monday, 21 January 2013 22:32 (twelve years ago)

Surfin' Bird, obv.

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Monday, 21 January 2013 22:34 (twelve years ago)

Three obvious omissions among many: "They're Coming to Take Me Away, Ha-Haaa!" Nervous Norvus's "Transfusion," Boots Walker's "They're Here." Must have been a licensing problem--if they could have squeezed another three songs on there, K-Tel would have.

I, Funky Album.

Voted 3*Yummy

What are the Goofy Greats of the last 20 years?

This came out in '75 and the earliest stuff on it is 1960's "Muleskinner Blues" (I think.)

brio, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 18:04 (twelve years ago)

Yeah, "Surfin' Bird." It's canonical, but why mess with perfection. Also, with one vote you are voting for three acts, The Trashmen, The Rivingtons and The Ramones, and three tunes, "Surfin' Bird," "The Bird Is The Word" and "Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow."

Leopard Skin POLL-Box Hat (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 18:21 (twelve years ago)

WTF, how could they leave Ray Stevens' "Gitarzan" off this (slightly different version of the 28-track Canadian edition) without altering the illustration on the front cover for chrissakes?! No "Purple People Eater" either.

I'd vote for "Gitarzan" if it were an option here. But "Surfin' Bird" will do nicely.

So many memories, this record! (1975 Xmas gift)

Sir Lord Baltimora (Myonga Vön Bontee), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 18:46 (twelve years ago)

With which you are also voting for David Bowie's "Life On Mars."

This was the first record I ever bought, when I was six. As much as I enjoyed playing "The Name Game" with "Chuck," I have to go with "Little Green Bag."

Tarfumes The Escape Goat, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 19:03 (twelve years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Thursday, 31 January 2013 00:01 (twelve years ago)

Whenever I try to hum 'Green Tambourine', I get the riff mixed up with The Who's 'Go to the Mirror!', which barely edges it over 'Surfin' Bird' for me.

blatherskite, Thursday, 31 January 2013 00:44 (twelve years ago)

What are the Goofy Greats of the last 20 years?

Good question--not sure at what point weird turns into stoopid (the good kind) turns into goofy...the Vengaboys' "We Like to Party"? "Party Rock"? "Gangnam Style"? As Kent Brockman once said, only time will tell.

clemenza, Thursday, 31 January 2013 00:47 (twelve years ago)

the "crazy frog" thing?

Mr. Snrub, Thursday, 31 January 2013 03:30 (twelve years ago)

Surfin Bird messes this up for me, because otherwise I have an undying affection for Beep Beep.

The first album I ever owned was some comp called Goofy Gold, with some overlap.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 31 January 2013 03:33 (twelve years ago)

Went with "Alley Oop" over "Surfin' Bird."

And yes, I have this LP, though I'd say Funnybone Favorites is its closest competitor on my compilation shelf:

Makes me glad to see that, for a poll
of this importance, we ilxors can put aside our differences and all almost vote for "Surfin' Βird."

Leopard Skin POLL-Box Hat (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 31 January 2013 05:31 (twelve years ago)

with one vote you are voting for three acts, The Trashmen, The Rivingtons and The Ramones

Yeah, but with Hollywood Argyles you can kind of also toss in Hotlegs and the Jimmy Castor Bunch.

Man, there's some great songs on here. Saw "Simon Says" and was like, aw, wish "1-2-3 Red Light" was an option. Scrolled down and sure enough. Probably still go with "Surfin' Bird", but it's a tough race.

The Apple Dumpling Gangbang (Old Lunch), Thursday, 31 January 2013 18:19 (twelve years ago)

Went for Beep Beep cos it's quite funny and won't get much love

dog latin, Thursday, 31 January 2013 18:22 (twelve years ago)

What's goofy about "Nashville Cats"?

Lee626, Thursday, 31 January 2013 18:22 (twelve years ago)

I always wondered that myself!

Forgot about Goofy Gold, when mentioning Funny Bone Favorites up above:

Maybe if you imagine actual guitar-picking cats

Sir Lord Baltimora (Myonga Vön Bontee), Thursday, 31 January 2013 19:38 (twelve years ago)

I used to work at a bar where godawful bands often played, especially early in the week when we made no money so we tended to really resent the bands.

One day I came in during a loud horrible sound-check by a really terrible band, bar completely empty, and one of the other bartenders was sitting behind the bare smiling and chuckling to himself

I asked him what was so funny and he said "I'm just imagining this music is being played by monkeys... it's way better this way."

It's actually a useful trick, I still use it from time to time.

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Friday, 1 February 2013 00:01 (twelve years ago)

Not as lopsided as I expected--thought "Surfin' Bird" would get about three-quarters of all votes cast.

clemenza, Friday, 1 February 2013 00:15 (twelve years ago)

I feel like some exec was like, "Hey, make sure you put that one song on there. 'Little Something Something'. There's a color in the title." Because 'Little Black Egg' makes more sense in this compilation than does 'Little Green Bag'.

The Last Starfucker (Old Lunch), Friday, 1 February 2013 00:20 (twelve years ago)

"Little Black Egg" is fantastic; never liked "Little Green Bag" till Reservoir Dogs. I'm not sure either one belongs on this album.

clemenza, Friday, 1 February 2013 00:29 (twelve years ago)

Wow, fast poll. Forgot to vote.

My sister and I used to play my dad's 45 of "Beep Beep" and race around the couch as the song got faster and faster.

Must be rights issues that keep David Seville songs off these sorts of comps, but I'm a huge fan of this one:

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 1 February 2013 00:34 (twelve years ago)

wow, good showing by Green Tambourine!

Also nice to see so many get at least one vote, even with a monster like Surfin' Bird in the mix.

brio, Friday, 1 February 2013 14:04 (twelve years ago)

Voted 'Chewy Chewy' on the basis of "which is teh most goofy?"

(And on that basis, I'm happy '1,2,3 Red Light' got zero votes as it's not at all goofy. Slightly creepy, maybe. Goofy, no.)

Jeff W, Friday, 1 February 2013 14:17 (twelve years ago)

Must be rights issues that keep David Seville songs off these sorts of comps

"Witch Doctor" is actually on Funny Bone Favorites, out the same year (1978). But maybe Ronco had rights with him that K-Tel didn't, who knows.

xhuxk, Friday, 1 February 2013 14:26 (twelve years ago)

green tambourine isn't actually super-goofy, by the era's standards. no goofier than "good vibrations" or "incense and peppermints" or whatever.

brio, Friday, 1 February 2013 14:39 (twelve years ago)

Cheaper to license, I bet.

Tarfumes The Escape Goat, Friday, 1 February 2013 14:44 (twelve years ago)

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 1 February 2013 15:58 (twelve years ago)

"Martian Hop" rules.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 1 February 2013 15:58 (twelve years ago)

27. The Old Payola Roll Blues (4:23) - Stan Freberg (Side 1)

This is funny to a point, but rreeaaally lays it on thick towards the end. It's quaint in a wrong-side-of-history kind of way.

Tarfumes The Escape Goat, Friday, 1 February 2013 16:20 (twelve years ago)

It's funny, but also you do get the impression Stan rreeeeeeeeeeeally HATES this music!

Mark G, Friday, 1 February 2013 16:23 (twelve years ago)

Don't exactly know what it's doing on this album but "1-2-3 Red Light" is sheer brilliance

Designated Striver (Tom D.), Friday, 1 February 2013 16:24 (twelve years ago)

Fond memories of The Pooh sticks' cover version.

Mark G, Friday, 1 February 2013 16:25 (twelve years ago)

I had a friend who used to call into the oldies station every day after school and request "Mr. Bass Man."

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 1 February 2013 16:25 (twelve years ago)

They must have loved him.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 1 February 2013 16:26 (twelve years ago)

Talking Heads did it too of course (xxp)

Designated Striver (Tom D.), Friday, 1 February 2013 16:26 (twelve years ago)

Say they covered "Mr Bass Man" !!

Mark G, Friday, 1 February 2013 16:27 (twelve years ago)

And renamed it Ms. Bass Woman

Designated Striver (Tom D.), Friday, 1 February 2013 16:27 (twelve years ago)

oh mannn, can't believe i missed this

see: Best Novelty Song On K-Tel's "Looney Tunes' Compilation

which addresses the David Seville gap, plus "They're Coming To Take Me Away," Nervous Norvus, and the separate "Bird's The Word" & "Papa Oom Mow Mow Mow."

I gotta keep my eye out for a copy of Goofy Greats.

Doctor Casino, Friday, 1 February 2013 16:28 (twelve years ago)

Be forewarned: apparently, there's more than one version of Goofy Greats. I spotted a copy in a store recently, but the titles didn't match what I'd remembered (e.g., the absence of "Snoopy vs. the Red Baron" despite the Snoopy drawing on the cover).

Tarfumes The Escape Goat, Friday, 1 February 2013 16:32 (twelve years ago)

Might have voted for "Mr. Bass Man" over "Surfin' Bird." Also like The Marcels' response to "Mr. Bass Man," "I Wanna Be The Leader."
