This came out in '75 and the earliest stuff on it is 1960's "Muleskinner Blues" (I think.)

WTF, how could they leave Ray Stevens' "Gitarzan" off this (slightly different version of the 28-track Canadian edition) without altering the illustration on the front cover for chrissakes?! No "Purple People Eater" either.

This was the first record I ever bought, when I was six. As much as I enjoyed playing "The Name Game" with "Chuck," I have to go with "Little Green Bag."

Good question--not sure at what point weird turns into stoopid (the good kind) turns into goofy...the Vengaboys' "We Like to Party"? "Party Rock"? "Gangnam Style"? As Kent Brockman once said, only time will tell.

Surfin Bird messes this up for me, because otherwise I have an undying affection for Beep Beep.

The first album I ever owned was some comp called Goofy Gold, with some overlap.

Went with "Alley Oop" over "Surfin' Bird."

I used to work at a bar where godawful bands often played, especially early in the week when we made no money so we tended to really resent the bands.

One day I came in during a loud horrible sound-check by a really terrible band, bar completely empty, and one of the other bartenders was sitting behind the bare smiling and chuckling to himself

I asked him what was so funny and he said "I'm just imagining this music is being played by monkeys... it's way better this way."

It's actually a useful trick, I still use it from time to time.

Not as lopsided as I expected--thought "Surfin' Bird" would get about three-quarters of all votes cast.

I feel like some exec was like, "Hey, make sure you put that one song on there. 'Little Something Something'. There's a color in the title." Because 'Little Black Egg' makes more sense in this compilation than does 'Little Green Bag'.

"Little Black Egg" is fantastic; never liked "Little Green Bag" till Reservoir Dogs. I'm not sure either one belongs on this album.

"Witch Doctor" is actually on Funny Bone Favorites, out the same year (1978). But maybe Ronco had rights with him that K-Tel didn't, who knows.

green tambourine isn't actually super-goofy, by the era's standards. no goofier than "good vibrations" or "incense and peppermints" or whatever.

This is funny to a point, but rreeaaally lays it on thick towards the end. It's quaint in a wrong-side-of-history kind of way.

Be forewarned: apparently, there's more than one version of Goofy Greats. I spotted a copy in a store recently, but the titles didn't match what I'd remembered (e.g., the absence of "Snoopy vs. the Red Baron" despite the Snoopy drawing on the cover).

Might have voted for "Mr. Bass Man" over "Surfin' Bird." Also like The Marcels' response to "Mr. Bass Man," "I Wanna Be The Leader."
