did Semisonic cancel?

frogbs, Wednesday, 23 January 2013 18:58 (twelve years ago)

Gin Blossoms, because between them and The Verve Pipe's "Freshmen," this entire lineup has been responsible for about five or six songs that I like.

Public Brooding Closet (cryptosicko), Wednesday, 23 January 2013 18:59 (twelve years ago)

Hope the Spin Doctors get to do the safety briefing. "One two, life vests lie before you, just put 'em on now. Lifeboats, boarding on the boat deck, just go ahead now."

Gollum: "Hot, Ready and Smeagol!" (Phil D.), Wednesday, 23 January 2013 19:06 (twelve years ago)

McGrath is reviving Rock n' Roll Jeopardy! for this thing. I would so seriously go just to play that.

go to party leather (ENBB), Wednesday, 23 January 2013 19:08 (twelve years ago)

best song - Vertical Horizon - Everything You Want - though watching the douchetastic video just now is making me reconsider
best band - Gin Blossoms

Cracker seem like a weird choice for this.

how's life, Wednesday, 23 January 2013 19:26 (twelve years ago)

Not really. David Lowery will go anywhere for a dollar.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 23 January 2013 19:27 (twelve years ago)

I don't think I've ever seen someone enjoy their 2nd/3rd tier celebrity status as much as Mark McGrath seems to.

iatee, Wednesday, 23 January 2013 19:37 (twelve years ago)

Of these, I've seen Cracker (RFK Stadium 1994) and Spin Doctors (Merriweather Post 1993, but only because the Screaming Trees were opening).

how's life, Wednesday, 23 January 2013 19:38 (twelve years ago)

I saw Live open for someone in '92, and during a between-songs lull I yelled "YOU SUCK!" Ed K looked very hurt.

I saw Cracker in '92 as well, and still might whenever Camper van Beethoven is opening.

saltwater incursion (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 23 January 2013 20:16 (twelve years ago)

I was pretty appalled recently to discover that I know basically all the words to several Live songs. Still.

I still keep reading this thread title as Mark McGuire and friends. About the only way you'd get me on a cruise was if it was full of Ashra Temple worship from dawn to dusk.

damnit, I just sat here trying to think of what the Verve Pipe would sing if they were your servers, and then I realized that The Verve Pipe =/= The Verve. Anyway, all I had was "We have a bittersweet chocolate cake tonight"

Voting Spin Doctors. Not that I like them - I actually hate them, pretty much.

However, I was once roommates with the lead singer's brother. We were even shot at together as we walked back to our apartment after a late night White Castle run. And while he was a hippie, we bonded over a mutual love of Black Sabbath.

So I'd like to know how he's doing.

Big Sambola & The Tailspinners (C. Grisso/McCain), Friday, 25 January 2013 02:49 (twelve years ago)

He had an enormous falling out with them.

On November 30, 2009, Taylor revealed that the "hiatus" was more likely a permanent split.[15] He alleged that the reasons for the break-up included Kowalczyk's demand of a $100,000 "lead singer bonus" at the 2009 Pinkpop Festival and a 2005 contract making Kowalczyk the sole signatory of Live's Black Coffee Publishing company without the knowledge of the rest of the band.[15]

I really liked the Four Songs ep that preceded Mental Jewelry. To me, it sounded really similar to Pearl Jam's Ten, which came out a few weeks prior, but none of my friends who were into Pearl Jam would listen to it.

And going through wikipedia to confirm that info about release dates, I learned that Pearl Jam have had a keyboard player for the last ten years named Boom Gaspar! Who they met through CJ Ramone!

Heh - I was at both of those shows too! The Screaming Trees/Spin Doctors one also had Soul Asylum on the bill!

Walter Galt, Friday, 25 January 2013 15:51 (twelve years ago)

Come to think of it, I also saw Screaming Trees at the 9:30 club in 1992. And, I think, the Spin Doctors at University of Maryland in 1993. I mean, I had seen a few Fugazi shows by then - but I was still like "The Doctors are at Ritchie Coliseum, and I happen to have a pocket full of kryptonite. Let's do this thing." So weird.

Walter Galt, Friday, 25 January 2013 15:53 (twelve years ago)

(Oh - and here's the list of the other people on that HFStival bill in '94 that Cracker was on:

Counting Crows
Violent Femmes
Pavement
James
Toad the Wet Sprocket
Cracker
Meat Puppets
Afghan Whigs
Rollins Band
Gigolo Aunts
Madder Rose
Tuscadero
Lotion
The Greenberry Woods
Edsel

Which is a whole 'nother poll, I suppose.

Walter Galt, Friday, 25 January 2013 15:58 (twelve years ago)

"The Doctors are at Ritchie Coliseum, and I happen to have a pocket full of kryptonite. Let's do this thing."

loooool

That was a great hfstival. Would have been worth it just to hear the Meat Puppets on a stage that big.

anyone game to go there? i think i should. i would bring a book about death and grief and hopefully that experience would help me get to term with the loss of those few years in my life when i was in musical depression.

Sébastien, Saturday, 26 January 2013 20:05 (twelve years ago)

but i don't think i have the kind of personality to sustain such a sick joke for an extended period of time. i should know, i worked in an office for a few years and had a bad time. haha. would probably jump overboard after a few days. on the plus side: my hilarious suicide would be remembered by music nerds forever.

Sébastien, Saturday, 26 January 2013 20:10 (twelve years ago)

Cracker is the only one of these bands i remotely care about, and it is very very very remotely.

Mark is going to bring the cruise to you instead!

The Mark McGrath & Friends Cruise drowned before it ever set sail, but the Sugar Ray frontman has mapped another nostalgia-baiting tour through the '90s — this time, on land. Beginning on July 4, McGrath and the rest of Sugar Ray will lead the Under the Sun tour across North America. Fellow alt-pop radio holdovers Smash Mouth, the Gin Blossoms, Vertical Horizon, and Fastball will tag along.

I don't know why Spin is dissing McGrath and the other bands so hard. Those bands were all featured on the pages of the magazine back in the day and at least those bands are still touring. Unlike Spin which ceased publication.

I don't know why Spin is dissing McGrath and the other bands so hard. Those bands were all featured on the pages of the magazine back in the day and at least those bands are still touring. Unlike Spin which ceased publication.

The opinions in their alt-rock cover stories and album reviews have often clashed, but never as frequently as 98-2001. I'm pretty positive Charles Aaron didn't like "Fly" or "Semi-Charmed Life" and gave curt reviews to Our Lady Peace and Marcy Playground calling them "Fourth Eye Blind" and "Matchbox 21" or something to that extent.
