xyzzzz__, Thursday, 24 January 2013 12:35 (twelve years ago)

I know, it's not that I don't like the majority of these (um, admittedly I've kinda glimpsed this list), it's

1) I don't like listening to music while working
2) I'd rather listen to music I love, or don't know.

Mark G, Thursday, 24 January 2013 12:37 (twelve years ago)

how was this list created? DJ nominations and the listeners?

Still a few good shows on 6music FWIW, The Freak Zone is consistently good still. But yeah, horrible.

Neil S, Thursday, 24 January 2013 12:41 (twelve years ago)

Pinnacles aren't what they used to be.

Matt DC, Thursday, 24 January 2013 12:46 (twelve years ago)

The station is much better than that list suggests but either it's been compiled by idiots or the timeframe of the list has been a terrible period for this sort of music.

Otherwise it resembles an XFM breakfast show playlist.

Matt DC, Thursday, 24 January 2013 12:48 (twelve years ago)

that's it- a list like this for any other station would look equally bad IMO. It's just frustrating that they still have people like Steve "Lammo" Lamacq who see fit to play Strangelove b-sides on their shows.

Neil S, Thursday, 24 January 2013 12:49 (twelve years ago)

this cd make a good "worst record ever made" poll, we got Kasabian, we got the Karsey Chiefs, we got a bunch of other shit i assume is terrible from they stupid names and they fan clubs

See it'd make sense if they nominated the video for late-period Beastie Boys single that no-one cared about Make Some Noise, as that's the one with no Beasties and a ton of famous actors, and is basically a send-off to MCA.

Andrew Farrell, Thursday, 24 January 2013 13:25 (twelve years ago)

I like 17 of these well enough. Dizzy, Bloc, or Arctics ftw.

This is an odd list but I still like 30+ songs on it - enough to not want to vote.

Deafening silence (DL), Thursday, 24 January 2013 13:44 (twelve years ago)

Listening to 6Music yesterday morning, it struck me; it’s actually a very good station to listen to unless/until it plays “new” music. “Popscene,” “Digital Love,” “Give It Up” by Public Enemy, etc. etc. – all very agreeable. But then any momentum is broken to give undue space to what I shall term Useless Indie Tossers with their “great” “new” record (memo to 6Music presenters: constantly telling me that something or someone is “well worth checking out” ensures that I will never check it or them out).

It’s the BBC so they have this misplaced sense of charity/public service playing records which otherwise really would be lucky to end up in a random MVE package, with hopeless tossers who should never have been given exposure in the first place, never mind the superannuated Britpop veterans with their latest dismal solo outings.

My solution is to drop the pointless fixation with the “new” and concentrate on playing good, wide-ranging back catalogue stuff, only dipping into new things when they are absolutely worth it (which in the world of 6Music Gimme Indie Radio is unfortunately not very frequently these days). They might get more listeners and don’t need to be Xfm with a postgrad degree.

Here he is with the classic "Poème Électronique." Good track (Marcello Carlin), Thursday, 24 January 2013 14:21 (twelve years ago)

I've seen the full list and am amazed there's no Wainwrights nor the rules allowing 8 different songs for Richard Hawley

'Separate Lives', by Phil Collins & Marilyn Manson (PaulTMA), Thursday, 24 January 2013 14:26 (twelve years ago)

Well, yes.

It's like I miss the Radio 1 of old, where the Bates/Blackburn/Hamilton slots were filled on weekdays, whereas the Saturday days/evenings were where you could get documentaries and more 'obscure' sounds that I wasn't that bothered about age 11 but would have been had I been 21 at the time (and for a while, I was...) Now, there's not one hour there that can't play Nicki Minaj, nothing against her specifically but if there were many hours where you would Not hear The Fall, there was at least two whee you might...

I'd listen more to 6music in the 'good' hours, but my car don't do digital radio./

to each his own but (Eazy), Thursday, 24 January 2013 14:31 (twelve years ago)

I wondered why everyone was listing Dizzee when Dizzee isn't on the list, but there he is, under F for "fix".

(Not that it would be totally un-ILM for everyone to list a write-in vote and for that write-in vote to be Dizzee Rascal)

a panda, Malmö (a passing spacecadet), Thursday, 24 January 2013 14:33 (twelve years ago)

i've had to listen to more 6music than normal usually and it does my head in - it's such a smug and self-congratulatory station, the constant adverts which go on about how it's best for underground artists (even though i mostly hear the most middle-of-the-road, established acts possible on it) and - even worse - about how it plays EVERY GENRE!!! of music. that's such bollocks, it plays INDIE with a tiny smattering of the most consensus, crossover, rap/dance/r&b hits or critical faves, none within the past half decade because those genres are only valid if they tick the longevity and nostalgia boxes. that attitude so utterly typifies indie kids' propensity for seeing themselves as the centre of the musical universe. it's so fucking middle-of-the-road and ~tasteful~ and ugh bomb it bomb it bomb it into hell.

lex pretend, Thursday, 24 January 2013 14:37 (twelve years ago)

like i fucking hate radio 1 and the cunts who constantly shout nonsense on it but even that is preferable

but really just shut them all down

lex pretend, Thursday, 24 January 2013 14:38 (twelve years ago)

I could have went with Arctic Monkeys or British Sea Power as I love both those tracks but I ultimately went for Johnny Cash.

leave Radio 3 thx

Eden Hazard otm (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 24 January 2013 14:41 (twelve years ago)

it's not about 6music playing indie it's about 6music being a smug, unchallenging middle-of-the-road bubble constantly intent on entirely unwarranted self-congratulations

lex pretend, Thursday, 24 January 2013 14:43 (twelve years ago)

don't think lex was saying fuck 6music for liking indie - well, maybe a little - so much as moaning about the self-important way that indie djs talk to their audience - "THIS (is the only) MUSIC (that) MATTERS (to serious grown-ups like you and me)"

most djs have a steez but that Jo Whiley/Steve Lamacq steez is specially noxious

Eden Hazard otm (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 24 January 2013 14:43 (twelve years ago)

This is my 'bad'..

The list is taken from the "Youtube playlist", and Dizzee's entry is in the right alphabetical place (i.e. by Artist), but I copied the list from there and filtered/sorted it to leave only the track details (for the most part)..

it *is* listed as title/artist but it's not in the wrong place for the voting (probably), as I already voted and cannot get back into the voting page now.

Mark G, Thursday, 24 January 2013 14:46 (twelve years ago)

i dont know what 6music is but i like way more of these than i expected to after seeing the first few

tity boi historian (ciderpress), Thursday, 24 January 2013 14:47 (twelve years ago)

xxxp yeah fair enough, they do go on a bit. There is good stuff to be found though- Gilles Peterson Saturday afternoon show is p decent (though he's his own brand of smug), some of the late night stuff. Don't mean to be Cap'N save-a-6music, but it's a bit unfair to dismiss the whole station on the basis of one list.

Neil S, Thursday, 24 January 2013 14:48 (twelve years ago)

not dismissing based on the list (though christ it is terrible), dismissing based on 6music always being on at my bf's house ;_;

Just want to make sure we're not congratulating R3 here because it has its own problems..

as long as Classic *shudder* FM exists 3 is gonna look like the most serious shit in the world

Eden Hazard otm (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 24 January 2013 14:55 (twelve years ago)

back to the topic tho, in light of 6's ATTICHOOD, consider the title of this list and choke back a little sob

Eden Hazard otm (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 24 January 2013 14:57 (twelve years ago)

6music is pretty horrendous in the day, but marcello is otm about it playing good older music. and it isn't totally indie-centric, it's on in my office constantly and i'm occasionally surprised to hear lfo at 9 in the morning, or strings of life or whatever. it's just very canonical, very canonical indeed. i'd say 1/5 tracks is good.

some of the 6mixes are good too and have plenty of ilm favourites involved, only found these via them being shared on soundcloud or whatever but matthew dear and nico jaar have done good ones.

i've no real need to listen to radio myself and their djs are incredibly annoying, and their audience is that self-congratulatory guardian-reader type, but i can well imagine there must be good shows buried in the schedule.

this list is woeful tho.

Ballboy to Afghanistan (LocalGarda), Thursday, 24 January 2013 15:15 (twelve years ago)

as Lex says that's part of the problem- "right we've played Chime, that's the dance music box ticked for the next two hours then". Same with token reggae, hip hop etc. picks.

Neil S, Thursday, 24 January 2013 15:25 (twelve years ago)

i like the idea of it going where Marcello said - mostly older stuff, get specialist DJs to do a lot of different genre shows, have the odd show with new stuff if you like but minimise that, and do it all thru the day not just evenings/weekends. can't believe that wd lose much of the existing audience.

Eden Hazard otm (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 24 January 2013 15:32 (twelve years ago)

and initiate a ban list for stuff that doesn't need playing on the radio again for at least the next 12 months

Eden Hazard otm (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 24 January 2013 15:33 (twelve years ago)

as Lex says that's part of the problem- "right we've played Chime, that's the dance music box ticked for the next two hours then". Same with token reggae, hip hop etc. picks.

it does play newer dance stuff as well, just not really in the daytime.

Ballboy to Afghanistan (LocalGarda), Thursday, 24 January 2013 15:47 (twelve years ago)

I listen to 6Music in the evening when I make my dinner and it's usually pretty good, bu is this what they normally play during the daytime? Not exactly inspiring. Voted ro Fix Up btw

There's a really self-congratulatory Mark Riley trailer where he says "it's important that 6music plays underground music because no one else does" which is kind of comical in its lack of awareness.

6music can be unbearable a lot of the time but I love love love Cerys Matthews' Sunday morning show (10-12), which plays lots of old stuff. Perfect easy Sunday morning stuff, and she is kinda charming and actually knows how to talk to her guests. Seriously, she's great. This is the playlist for the most recent show (available here). I dunno, for me this is a fun time:

Chris Kenner - I Like It Like That
Valerie June - You Can't Be Told Pushin' Against A Stone
Tom Morgan - Best Thing For Baby
Foxygen - Shuggie
Bob Dylan - Absolutely Sweet Marie
Hoyt Ming & his Pep-Steppers - Indian War Whoop
Angela Perley - Brooklyn Girls
Taj Mahal - Queen Bee Senor Blues
Bassekou Kouyate - Moustafa
The Gladiators - Soul Rebel
Tran Ang Flowers Group - Vietnamese Dan Bau
Villagers - Nothing Arrived
Elliott Brood - Lindsay
The Art Farmer Quartet - Goodbye, Old Girl
Dr. Feelgood - She Does It Right
Little Willie John - I Need Your Love So Bad
The Young Holt Trio - Wack Wack
Camp Freddy - The Jean Genie
The James Taylor Quartet - Fuzzburn
Sam Carter - Wave & Tremors (Live)
The Strypes - You Can't Judge A Book By Looking At The Cover

hate to say it, but huey from flc plays some good soul/funk etc recs on a sunday, too

Ward Fowler, Thursday, 31 January 2013 10:43 (twelve years ago)

Cerys on Sunday mornings is great, and sat evenings are fun with Giles Peterson then Craig Charles funk show ( Craig Charles is a very annoying man, but all the amazing atomic funk he plays makes up for it) but yeah, the daytimes are a bit of a slog.

Huey is part of the problem, not the solution IMO. Lex has expressed his loathing for Jarvis elsewhere, but he's marmity, and I quite like him. freak zone is surprising and well curated. Mark radcliffe and lammo need to dance off into the sunset together and never come back.

xp I find Huey's choice of music as bland and tickboxy as the other daytime hosts wrt . He might play, maybe, one or two interesting tunes per hour? Otherwise it's bland oldies all the way. I realise I'm out of step with the consensus on this one.
