Full disclosure - I work with the band but... their next record falls into the catch all premise of the subject and is what some people might call a "return to form"

Crack On, Have A Booze (with Manda Rin) (DJ Mencap), Friday, 25 January 2013 10:39 (twelve years ago)

I like the idea of this thread, but the problem with it is that, unlike pop, dance, metal and hip-hop, music like this is by nature unhappy being categorised and lumped in with other styles so it's gonna be a bit difficult. Still, I'll make a point of keeping up and posting :-)

besides Sunny Real Estate (dog latin), Friday, 25 January 2013 14:30 (twelve years ago)

The music itself is unhappy? It'll do what I bloody say. Not like genre is being forced upon anything - this thread is designed as a loose convocation of as wide a variety as possible of interesting or challenging music. The irony is that only your post ascribes any uniformity of character to potential inclusions.

imago, Friday, 25 January 2013 14:46 (twelve years ago)

*bookmarked*

emil.y, Friday, 25 January 2013 14:48 (twelve years ago)

haha, no it's more that dance music, for instance, thrives on being categorised under banners, whereas a lot of rock-based acts don't like to feel they're a part of any scene and I think fans themselves might feel uncomfortable with "ah this new band i just discovered is ripe for the rolling rock thread". maybe not, i dunno... it's where the rolling thread format breaks down for me. I miss outloud.fm.

besides Sunny Real Estate (dog latin), Friday, 25 January 2013 14:50 (twelve years ago)

Is this called the rolling rock thread? Embrace everything and trust that it will respond in kind. Not that it has a choice.

hen I get home I will check out those links :)

imago, Friday, 25 January 2013 14:54 (twelve years ago)

I think dog latin's mistake comes from the assumption that this thread is for 'weird rock' or something. Which, you know, would find a home here, but is not what this is about.

emil.y, Friday, 25 January 2013 14:58 (twelve years ago)

I am down with this thread.

a la recherche du tempbans perdu (NickB), Friday, 25 January 2013 16:41 (twelve years ago)

Some tracks I loved from last year that I would have been blasting you all with in Outloud (RIP) but few if any other people got excited about:

LA Vampires and Maria Minerva - A Lover and a Friend (hipster housey)
Hiss Golden Messenger - Blue Country Mystic (folky, discovered from the EOY nominations)
Yori Horikawa - Bubbles (bubbly)
Discoverer - Personal Clone (bladerunnerwave)
Starring - the best (psych/noise covers of MOR hits seemed to be a thing this year)
Mark McGuire - Surrogate Channels ("Adrenochrome" was my Emeralds jam this year, but MMG's under-the-radar EP was also great)
Tenniscoats - Hikoki (twee post-rock odyssey)
Collarbones - Hypothermia (reminds me of that Autre Ne Veut song, not as catchy but still cool)
Sexy Fi - Pequeno Dictionário das Ruas (RIYL Latin American hipster shit, most "indie rock" thing on this list)
Philipp Matalla - Space Line (more of that space disco I feast on)
Astral Social Club - FRWRKZ RMRK (with Katy Perry!)
Thousand Foot Whale Claw - Phobos (deep space synths)

questino (seandalai), Friday, 25 January 2013 18:11 (twelve years ago)

yeah I think this thread has some value for stuff that slips thru the cracks. like I've been wanting to talk about humanbeast for a while, but not sure where to put them? rolling noise/punk/indie/psych don't really fit what they're doing. they came out of the providence noise/experimental scene but like many have moved into more cold electronic beat stuff, I guess ppl call it fake techno now? dreamy/screamy. after doing a few tapes they've got a proper full length coming out this year, live show is great.

I put this on the Latin American hipster shit thread, but I'm still trying to get a response to it:

Basically sounds like poppier, more melodic, take on early industrial and offshoots (TG, Cabaret Voltaire, Psychic TV) to me.

scott seward, Saturday, 26 January 2013 01:29 (twelve years ago)

i REALLY like this but i don't know what you guys will think. a tape put out in 2008 but re-released on vinyl in 2012. i just love the sounds. every track is kinda its own thing.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 26 January 2013 09:00 (twelve years ago)

This seems like as good a thread as any for this...

Cool PR guy Howard Wuelfing got me into a show from a band Cinema Cinema this past week, which was super nice of him since I am pretty much retired from musical musing. But I wanted to give them a little hype because the group was pretty impressive. Playing a Monday night opening for a local and with only a handful of attendees, the Brooklyn duo - a bald, bearded, bad-ass guitarist/vocalist and a hyper-kinetic drummer (and they're cousins!) - acted like it was still a matter of life or death.

The group obviously digs Black Flag and it wasn't just the fact the singer/six stringer had a Flag tee on. Or that they apparently toured with Greg Ginn. Though those two factoids make me wish I could compare the band to someone else, it would be inaccurate given the frantic, riff-spazz-riff-spazz-spazz-riff style of the guitarist. To be sure, there are much worse bands to ape.

I picked up an EP and the last CD the band put out entitled "Manic Children & The Slow Aggression." You can stream the whole album on their website. The disc - produced by legendary DC producer Don Zientara at the legendary Inner Ear Studios and self-released - is not quite as good as the show was because Cinema Cinema stuck to the thrash-pop live. Frankly the slower, quieter stuff where he eschews screaming for singing pales in comparison to when the two guys just lose their collective shit. Fortunately they do that a lot more than not.

Here's the video from the album. Fortunately it's for an uptempo track (I think they know where their bread is toasted).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mwQVFg3N3gY

Apparently the band will play anywhere they are allowed to plug in and they play out in NYC, Brooklyn and northern NJ relatively often. I recommend seeing Cinema Cinema if the description or recorded stuff is even a little appealing to you because they killed it live.

flopson, Monday, 2 December 2013 01:48 (eleven years ago)

eh, it’s standard low-level bobbins cru carping about the elevation of noise and its corollary ~the degradation of groove~ together purportedly making the material sound like shit on sound systems + difficult to mix w/ standard techno fair. also, annoyance w/ the hype factor/crossover appeal that grants the artists greater coverage than veterans who don’t have a novel noise angle, which I’m sure is true but IDGAF. tbf I enjoy the label’s tunes more as lo-fi psych jams + I don’t have to mix this racket into crowd-moving sets.

way back in the dark ages of gabber there were already 1000-bpm cornball fux vying f/ the prestigious wet merkin prize f/ crippling onanism, so this particular strain of teen stupor has been around f/ a while. also, we may have shot past the point where ephemeral microgenres require anything more than self-referential authentication (p. sure no one glomming onto "splittercore" is waiting by the phone f/ Wenner's approval). idk, yr right in some old-media sense, but the youths on Bandcamp are cranking out new tags by the crate and it's less hoax than wager (the ghost of shit future will see you now).
