I'm positively obsessed with this song at the moment. Similarities to "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" notwithstanding, this is such a bouncy fun sentimental gift of a song and just what I needed to truly usher in a new music year for myself. Also, Betty is my new crush. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

That chorus is just so damned solid! Terrific earworm. And the little synth line that's running along behind it in the background. And the middle-eight slays me every time! "Why don't you lay me doooooown?"

initial thought was that "you're in love" was kind of mumbly and flimsy when compared to the towering bold might of "somebody loves you", how wrong my initial thought was

"if we get lost we'll follow old train tracks" is a really lovely line

I really like the whole EP, especially "Right Here", the first track of hers I heard. It gave me a different impression of what kind of music she made, but I wasn't disappointed when I heard the rest.

So I've played the album through about three times now...

1. I wish some of these songs weren't so melodically boring. I mean, they're okay, but it's just kind of stock pop circa 2014 in places.

2. Glory Days needs to be killed with fire.

3. I'm going to work on resequencing it to see if I can make it work better for me.

4. The first step in point 3 is removing Glory Days and adding Lovin' Start (which is inexcusably absent).

In case I didn't stress it enough, Glory Days is ass.

Didn't really expect the pop singer with the personality of a Swiffer mop to put out anything other than stock pop

Better, Glory Days and All of Me are the ones I'd ditch. Then I'd throw on Lovin' Start. From there, I'd probably front-load the sequence with older familiar songs and make the second act all new material for me to get to know over an extended period of time.

(I realize I've gone on record as hating it when Perpetua tries to do this with albums in the process of reviewing them, but I had a lot—probably too much—invested in this being better than it currently is.)

100% agree with Brad. Better is pretty bad, the pitch shifting sounds amateurish. Glory Days is so luxuriously laden with 80s clichés that I can't really hate it. & I love "All Of You" - it reminds me of crappy australian pop acts like tim & jean that i was into as an undergraduate.

However the slower songs are the real revelation. "Missing You" is a fkn knockout.

This album is a joy.

if she's given the chance to do another album, i hope it all sounds like "california rain".

Talking about knowing what cover to pick. It's like this song was written for her.

Apart from Somebody Loves You, which will probably always always be the best BW song, my other favorite is Lovin' Start which was left off the standard version of the album (and added on to the deluxe version). Gentle and dreamy in all the best ways.

This cover is fine, but I never thought the original was all that. Like, every song on Take Me When You Go (as perfect a pop album as any that has been released this decade) is better than it.

I've always liked the original, but the production on the BW version is fuller and sweepier in just the right amount.

Okay, so, at its core, I don't find this as offensively bad as Human Touch was, but my god there are so many things going on over the top of it that it's just a car crash. Also, when it comes to melody writing, she's got a very tiny bag of tricks. This doesn't just sound like other people's songs. It sounds like other (better) Betty Who songs.

She really had something going for a while.... but so much for that

Objectively, it may not be, but I think I'm only madder now at how she's squandered the best qualities from her initial blast of songs.

(fwiw my praise for her first LP was rather muted as well, even though I started the thread)

The EP she put out recently (she's back to being independent) has a few gems: "Ignore Me" and "Just Thought You Should Know" particularly.

new album is pretty good! kind of patchy in the middle but "just thought you should know" is the best song she's ever done imo

Solid album, nothing to dislike, but equally I can't get that excited about much of it. I picked out "Old Me" and "All This Woman" in addition to "Just Thought…".

I saw her a week ago playing a private event at a hotel in Boston with less than fifty people. I thought she was great, but I was pretty drunk. Closed with Somebody Loves You.
