I'm positively obsessed with this song at the moment. Similarities to "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" notwithstanding, this is such a bouncy fun sentimental gift of a song and just what I needed to truly usher in a new music year for myself. Also, Betty is my new crush. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥
Don't expect this one-song thread to have the punch of a Tim F, Rev, lex or J0rdan-created thread, but I'm throwing it out there anyway. Love this song with me, people!
― Johnny Fever, Saturday, 26 January 2013 22:09 (twelve years ago)
That chorus is just so damned solid! Terrific earworm. And the little synth line that's running along behind it in the background. And the middle-eight slays me every time! "Why don't you lay me doooooown?"
― Johnny Fever, Saturday, 26 January 2013 22:21 (twelve years ago)
I like this, kind of reminds me of that Catcall song last year. Thanks for posting it! I do keep looking at her name and thinking 'who Betty who Betty who Betty is it?'
― Iain Mew (if), Sunday, 27 January 2013 17:37 (twelve years ago)
oh hey I kind of love this
― katherine, Sunday, 27 January 2013 21:13 (twelve years ago)
There were a lot of good songs on that Catcall album (I'd actually been waiting for it since "August" showed up back in 2008), but for some reason the whole thing never gelled properly for me. xp

Fuckin' A, this song is still killing me.
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 28 January 2013 13:31 (twelve years ago)
Even with her distinctive pronounciation of the word "home" I really like this. What is a Betty Who though?

Video for "You're In Love"
― Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Monday, 20 May 2013 21:43 (twelve years ago)
it's a toss up right now between "imagine it was us" and "somebody loves you" for single of the year in my mind
― monotony, Monday, 27 May 2013 03:36 (twelve years ago)
middle eight on this song is supercharged
xp that's a pretty excellent sophie's choice imo
― Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Monday, 27 May 2013 03:47 (twelve years ago)
initial thought was that "you're in love" was kind of mumbly and flimsy when compared to the towering bold might of "somebody loves you", how wrong my initial thought was
― monotony, Friday, 31 May 2013 11:53 (twelve years ago)
"if we get lost we'll follow old train tracks" is a really lovely line
― monotony, Friday, 31 May 2013 11:54 (twelve years ago)
I really like the whole EP, especially "Right Here", the first track of hers I heard. It gave me a different impression of what kind of music she made, but I wasn't disappointed when I heard the rest.

Wish it was the prelude to an LP rather than another EP, but I'll take what I can get.
Clip sounds promising. She's been writing with Bonnie McKee as well.

Yeah, it seems like she's something of a priority for RCA. I just hope she doesn't get run through the Sky Ferreira ringer.

― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Friday, 3 October 2014 13:45 (ten years ago)
So I've played the album through about three times now...
1. I wish some of these songs weren't so melodically boring. I mean, they're okay, but it's just kind of stock pop circa 2014 in places.
2. Glory Days needs to be killed with fire.
3. I'm going to work on resequencing it to see if I can make it work better for me.
4. The first step in point 3 is removing Glory Days and adding Lovin' Start (which is inexcusably absent).
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 9 October 2014 02:01 (ten years ago)
In case I didn't stress it enough, Glory Days is ass.
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 9 October 2014 02:06 (ten years ago)
Didn't really expect the pop singer with the personality of a Swiffer mop to put out anything other than stock pop
― Herbie Handcock (Murgatroid), Thursday, 9 October 2014 03:46 (ten years ago)
Well that's just wrong.
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 9 October 2014 04:40 (ten years ago)
i like "glory days"
the one i hate is "better"
― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Thursday, 9 October 2014 04:41 (ten years ago)
i think it's less melodically boring than aesthetically narrow. and badly sequenced but i'm not sure there's a good way to sequence this set of songs
totally 100 percent love "missing you," "california rain"
― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Thursday, 9 October 2014 04:42 (ten years ago)
Better, Glory Days and All of Me are the ones I'd ditch. Then I'd throw on Lovin' Start. From there, I'd probably front-load the sequence with older familiar songs and make the second act all new material for me to get to know over an extended period of time.
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 9 October 2014 05:55 (ten years ago)
(I realize I've gone on record as hating it when Perpetua tries to do this with albums in the process of reviewing them, but I had a lot—probably too much—invested in this being better than it currently is.)
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 9 October 2014 05:57 (ten years ago)
I wondered at Brad's 1975 ref until I heard "Glory Days".
― Tim F, Thursday, 9 October 2014 07:52 (ten years ago)
100% agree with Brad. Better is pretty bad, the pitch shifting sounds amateurish. Glory Days is so luxuriously laden with 80s clichés that I can't really hate it. & I love "All Of You" - it reminds me of crappy australian pop acts like tim & jean that i was into as an undergraduate.
However the slower songs are the real revelation. "Missing You" is a fkn knockout.
― uxorious gazumping (monotony), Thursday, 9 October 2014 12:11 (ten years ago)
This album is a joy.
― MaudAddam (cryptosicko), Tuesday, 25 November 2014 01:07 (ten years ago)

New album on the way.
New song today, but actually an old Donna Lewis song from 1996 (actually, I have a hard time wrapping my head around the fact this song is 20 years old).

― who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Friday, 3 June 2016 14:34 (nine years ago)
Talking about knowing what cover to pick. It's like this song was written for her.
― Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Friday, 3 June 2016 14:34 (nine years ago)
Apart from Somebody Loves You, which will probably always always be the best BW song, my other favorite is Lovin' Start which was left off the standard version of the album (and added on to the deluxe version). Gentle and dreamy in all the best ways.
― Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Friday, 3 June 2016 14:36 (nine years ago)
Hey thats good.
I like Missing You off the the debut
― Spottie, Friday, 3 June 2016 19:11 (nine years ago)
i kinda forgot this album existed until recently when i heard "Heartbreak Dream" in the closing credits of Pitch Perfect 2, that's a really good song.
― some dude, Friday, 3 June 2016 19:48 (nine years ago)
oh yeah that ones great
― Spottie, Friday, 3 June 2016 20:44 (nine years ago)
This cover is fine, but I never thought the original was all that. Like, every song on Take Me When You Go (as perfect a pop album as any that has been released this decade) is better than it.
― rhymes with "blondie blast" (cryptosicko), Friday, 3 June 2016 20:48 (nine years ago)
I've always liked the original, but the production on the BW version is fuller and sweepier in just the right amount.

her second single (on spotify) is also bad, worse than "human touch" i would venture. oh well we'll always have "somebody loves you" i guess
― monotony, Friday, 3 February 2017 00:05 (eight years ago)
might be ok but there's what feels like an interpolation of the chorus melody from fergie's "london bridge" that keeps popping up and ruining everything
― monotony, Friday, 3 February 2017 00:06 (eight years ago)
she's been charli xcx'd :(
― maura, Friday, 3 February 2017 01:08 (eight years ago)
My life would probably be better if I don't listen, but I'm going to anyway...
Okay, so, at its core, I don't find this as offensively bad as Human Touch was, but my god there are so many things going on over the top of it that it's just a car crash. Also, when it comes to melody writing, she's got a very tiny bag of tricks. This doesn't just sound like other people's songs. It sounds like other (better) Betty Who songs.
