there's also been this resurgence over the past three or four years of hardcore kinsella bros/american football worshippers making that exact sound a hundred times over, lots of finger-tapping and time changes. it's unfortunately been called "twinkle." i kind of love everythign that's come out of it though; last year's dads record was great, and maura just sent me this town needs guns on spotify, their record is v nice

yeah i didn't really notice the rock overkill but i guess i think the tendency of those scenes is to shun emo and pop-punk and metalcore

Yeah that Cartel album is fresh. Havent listened in a while now. My wife loves that Minstrels Prayer song but I always thought that was one of the worst on there.

"minstrel's prayer" is awful yeah but the whole section of "a" that reprises half the album makes me want to like the lesser songs more

I am all in on this thread. Would this be the appropriate place to post about how much I love the new Paramore song? And how excited I am for the new Paramore album?

I spent about two days binging on twinkle when I found out that was a genre last year. I enjoyed it, but didn't take any lasting favorites away from it. Lots of promising bands that could be really good in two or three years, but need some seasoning. Unfortunately, they'll all probably break up before they become decent songwriters.

Saw them open for The Rocket Summer and Brandtson in 2005 or so. Had no clue who they were. Saw them at a Chile's after the gig and gave Hayley a high five and told her she rocked it.

Sounds like it's straight out of 2004, but it really works, because you can totally buy them just now discovering Liars or Pretty Girls Mark Graves or whatever and realizing "hey, this is pretty good."

I went to Warped Tour several years ago to see them. It was a humbling experience I wouldn't really recommend, and I can't say it was quite worth it. But I still return to Paramore's last two albums a lot. As one of the the very rare recent commercial alternative bands I've connected with, they'll probably always hold a weird, isolated place in my heart

xp I wrote a long, thinky piece about it I won't link to, but it's depressing how fast punk can leave you behind. I grew up with punk, and identified with it, and in my head still like to think it's a major part of me. And then you go to the Warped Tour and realize you are a dinosaur and punk is for kids

That's the worst thing, though. You can look young and fit in well enough, but even so the music you're exposed to—and the revulsion you can't help but feel toward it, even if you try to be open-minded about new forms of music—will make you feel like a withered curmudgeon from the inside

i covered warped tour for two years for the voice; last year they were catering to some kind of nostalgia circuit (taking back sunday headlined) but the year before it was all metalcore and unseemly metalcore hybrids (paramore officially headlined that thing but they weren't at the nassau coliseum date, so our headliner was a day to remember (guh))

anyway, so many kids in asking alexandria shirts, i wasn't sure what to do with myself

also i guess i'm the only dude who dislikes the new paramore; it's exhausting, it totally sounds like three people trying to make up losing a primary songwriter and an excellent drummer by just incorporating every idea they have (albeit said former-primary songwriter and excellent drummer are also complete turds)

"ignorance" feels so effortless by comparison

I dunno. "Now" is jumpy, but it doesn't strike me as overworked (at least not more so than any other Paramore single). It's busy, but it all comes together pretty well

I've been listening to the latest Cheap Girls record on repeat alot lately. Does that count as pop-punk? (They toured with the Mezingers (a band I have tried to get into but just don't get)) so one would assume...)

I love the backing tracks on a lot of these songs but the vocals just don't work.

i do not at all understand the love for the mezingers from the absolutepunk crowd. band is boring as hell

pop-punk = poppier hardcore, until you hit the late '90s imo

Lol at dayo posting the "Check Yes Juliet" clip above, that always plays on the TV at my gym and it always bothers me that Juliet is breaking all her father's rules for a guy with such terrible hair.

American Radass is a hoot. That album has an energy and impulsiveness that a lot of these other ones don't imo.

I'll have to revisit that Owel album. I remember really, really being smitten with it for a minute, but now I don't remember much about it (which is the case with a lot of these albums).

what happened to the re-release of their album from last year? seems like that new EP maybe took its place

mostly what i've found lacking in the whole "emo revival" thing is both energy and quality songs. a lot of bands are just really smart references stitched together, which can be exciting in a moment but doesn't leave much to return to

no idea what hopeless is doing with driver friendly but yeah bury a dream if it can be characterized as "emo revival" (it doesn't seem as in conversation with american football as all those other bands) would definitely be my favorite of the past few years

Yeah, it's the songwriting that's really lacking. I think that's why I find a lot of the emo revival less exciting than the mini twinkle boom from a year or two back. That stuff was never more than the sum of its influences, either, but at least the influences could be kind of cool and surprising sometimes

owel definitely seems both the most polished and the most fully formed of the bunch
