10=best band ever. love them unconditionly.
0=worst band ever. hate them.

one of those classic bands i could never truly "get", except for Piper, and some other moments here and there.

As long as you stop with ANIMALS.

I don't know old Floyd at all but the played-to-death period is amazing to me

Ima R.A.E.D. (DJP), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 20:08 (twelve years ago)

went through a barrett-only period for years before i discovered that the playing circa-meddle is just astounding. a band that really knew how to play together before waters started yelling about stuff exclusively. and even then i love the final cut.

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 20:10 (twelve years ago)

why did i italicize waters, idk

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 20:10 (twelve years ago)

okay I can't get behind The Final Cut at all

sort of disappointed to find out via wikipedia that nick mason couldn't play the changes on either "mother" or "two suns in the sunset" though

that's okay most people can't

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 20:12 (twelve years ago)

i like Piper, some songs from Meddle, and thats about it.
Wish You Were Here is ruined by Gilmour's blues guitar imo.
and The Wall, well..

nostormo, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 20:12 (twelve years ago)

oh, and the loss of humor since Barret left is a big disadvantage

nostormo, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 20:13 (twelve years ago)

idk i don't ever think they lost their humor, it's just a different kind after barrett leaves

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 20:15 (twelve years ago)

Without Syd they'd be a 5 but Syd is enough to take them up to 7-8

every dog latin has his day (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 20:15 (twelve years ago)

Gonna go with 7. Love Syd Barrett. Love about half the classic rock canon stuff & hate the other half. "Comfortably Numb" is beautiful, but they've also recorded a lot of music that is boring or loathsome to me. So 7 seems about right.

I like four songs from Piper, Saucerful except for Clegg, a few off of Meddle, the DSOTM -> Animals run, an EP worth of songs from the Wall, "Learning to Fly", and "High Hopes".

Points docked for: all the twee stuff on Piper, Corporal Clegg, most of the Wall, but especially the movie and extra-especially the song about the urge to defecate.

RULES, but Chose 8 because starting with WYWH I tend to nod off... Too much SOYCD -- much prefer the edited version on A Collection of Great Dance Songs, though I believe that is sacrilege to most. I do like Animals OK and bits of the next two.

The pastoral Floyd is especially my bag (A Pillow Of Winds, Grantchester Meadows, Cirrus Minor, etc.) and I dig all of the first 2 LPs - even "Corporal Clegg."

Kent Burt, Thursday, 31 January 2013 00:41 (twelve years ago)

Meddle is pretty different from Dark Side imo: way less emphasis on production, barely any lounge/jazz-rock influence, some actual up-tempo noisy rock on the first track, some folk-pop that they didn't return to much (maybe one or two tracks on The Wall?).

They sucked until they were able to shrug off Barrett, then they ruled roughly from Ummagumma through Animals, and The Wall and The Final Cut have plenty to recommend them. I'd say about an 8.

誤訳侮辱, Thursday, 31 January 2013 03:54 (twelve years ago)

i don't understand how anyone could think barrett sucked

reggie (qualmsley), Thursday, 31 January 2013 04:23 (twelve years ago)

Barrett sucked for me too, but then again I don't really go for the Ummagumma->Meddle period either. Floyd only really got going when Waters took over creative control, they ruled from DSOTM all the way to The Final Cut. So voting 8.

7, I guess, though there's quite a bit I haven't heard. Barrett ruled obv, Meddle is cool, The Wall kinda makes me hate them but it's got some jams. I should really listen to Animals sometime.

I really like the Barrett stuff
From '68-'71 I love Meddle and a few odd tracks from the other albums.
DSOTM/WYWH/Animals are all great.
Everything after that ranges from mediocre to actively terrible.

A 7 felt about right.

the rest - 4

4. I don't mind them when they're on, but they sort of straddle a line between art-pop and prog-rock without quite being either. I also prefer the Easy Star Allstars version of Dark Side Of The Moon to the original.

xpost They play "Money" like it's easy, PFLoyd make it sound difficult.

Mark G, Thursday, 31 January 2013 10:43 (twelve years ago)

I wonder if that's because even though Waters wrote the riff, he can barely play. Even now, watch him hacking through it on acoustic guitar on the Classic Albums Doc.

Always felt Waters had the potential to be a distinctive, and maybe even great, bassist. Up through Pompeii/DSOTM, he's steadily working towards becoming a singular voice on the instrument. But once hyperconceptualization took priority, his playing faded into anonymity.

Tarfumes The Escape Goat, Thursday, 31 January 2013 14:55 (twelve years ago)

Yeah, then he turned into a blues scale plodder

Designated Striver (Tom D.), Thursday, 31 January 2013 14:57 (twelve years ago)

Actually, he already was by DSOTM. He's great on the 60s material.

Designated Striver (Tom D.), Thursday, 31 January 2013 14:58 (twelve years ago)

Yeah, I was mainly thinking of "Money," but that's really the only standout for him. On Pompeii, he's got this sharp-edged neo-funk phrasing happening that was never followed up on.

Tarfumes The Escape Goat, Thursday, 31 January 2013 15:01 (twelve years ago)

Re: Waters's bass, he holds down the disco groove quite righteously on The Wall.

SongOfSam, Thursday, 31 January 2013 16:19 (twelve years ago)

Love to see a list of what studio tracks he actually plays on.

MaresNest, Thursday, 31 January 2013 16:28 (twelve years ago)

"Flaming" is so incredible, I love how the recording zigzags through all these different acoustic spaces. Truly psychedelic.

brimstead, Thursday, 31 January 2013 16:30 (twelve years ago)

Also come on if you are only accepting one twee Piper song it has to be motherfucking SCARECROW

hibernaculum (Jon Lewis), Thursday, 31 January 2013 16:34 (twelve years ago)

Meddle is pretty different from Dark Side imo: way less emphasis on production, barely any lounge/jazz-rock influence, some actual up-tempo noisy rock on the first track, some folk-pop that they didn't return to much (maybe one or two tracks on The Wall?).

Idk, they both sound spectacular, production wise (if not identical or anything). Seamus is the only thing that wouldn't really fit on Dark Side. And anyway, Dark Side is a pretty mish mashy album despite all the fx/transitions.
Also San Tropez is totally a lounge song.
I mean, ok the albums are a little different, but not that different.

brimstead, Thursday, 31 January 2013 16:36 (twelve years ago)

Twee Floyd is great. I love LSD.

brimstead, Thursday, 31 January 2013 16:37 (twelve years ago)

I don't even count that as twee!

Designated Striver (Tom D.), Thursday, 31 January 2013 16:38 (twelve years ago)

It is indicated that the scarecrow is sadder than the song's narrator, who is obviously himself rather sad. That is twee.

hibernaculum (Jon Lewis), Thursday, 31 January 2013 16:40 (twelve years ago)

Scarecrow's aren't twee tho, gnomes are of course

I don't really count Bike as twee.

Designated Striver (Tom D.), Thursday, 31 January 2013 16:50 (twelve years ago)

it's the good twee! Like Wind in the Willows.

Hm, maybe you're right. Tbh, even some of Meddle bores me.
