I don't know old Floyd at all but the played-to-death period is amazing to me

went through a barrett-only period for years before i discovered that the playing circa-meddle is just astounding. a band that really knew how to play together before waters started yelling about stuff exclusively. and even then i love the final cut.

Wish You Were Here is ruined by Gilmour's blues guitar imo.

Gonna go with 7. Love Syd Barrett. Love about half the classic rock canon stuff & hate the other half. "Comfortably Numb" is beautiful, but they've also recorded a lot of music that is boring or loathsome to me. So 7 seems about right.

I like four songs from Piper, Saucerful except for Clegg, a few off of Meddle, the DSOTM -> Animals run, an EP worth of songs from the Wall, "Learning to Fly", and "High Hopes".

Points docked for: all the twee stuff on Piper, Corporal Clegg, most of the Wall, but especially the movie and extra-especially the song about the urge to defecate.

Giving them a 5/10 because I love Piper & Meddle. I either hate or am not familiar with the rest of their albums.

RULES, but Chose 8 because starting with WYWH I tend to nod off... Too much SOYCD -- much prefer the edited version on A Collection of Great Dance Songs, though I believe that is sacrilege to most. I do like Animals OK and bits of the next two.

The pastoral Floyd is especially my bag (A Pillow Of Winds, Grantchester Meadows, Cirrus Minor, etc.) and I dig all of the first 2 LPs - even "Corporal Clegg."

Meddle is pretty different from Dark Side imo: way less emphasis on production, barely any lounge/jazz-rock influence, some actual up-tempo noisy rock on the first track, some folk-pop that they didn't return to much (maybe one or two tracks on The Wall?).

They sucked until they were able to shrug off Barrett, then they ruled roughly from Ummagumma through Animals, and The Wall and The Final Cut have plenty to recommend them. I'd say about an 8.

Barrett sucked for me too, but then again I don't really go for the Ummagumma->Meddle period either. Floyd only really got going when Waters took over creative control, they ruled from DSOTM all the way to The Final Cut. So voting 8.

I would give them a 10 if they hadn't started using songwriters in the mid-80s.

4. I don't mind them when they're on, but they sort of straddle a line between art-pop and prog-rock without quite being either. I also prefer the Easy Star Allstars version of Dark Side Of The Moon to the original.

Always felt Waters had the potential to be a distinctive, and maybe even great, bassist. Up through Pompeii/DSOTM, he's steadily working towards becoming a singular voice on the instrument. But once hyperconceptualization took priority, his playing faded into anonymity.

Actually, he already was by DSOTM. He's great on the 60s material.

Yeah, I was mainly thinking of "Money," but that's really the only standout for him. On Pompeii, he's got this sharp-edged neo-funk phrasing happening that was never followed up on.

Re: Waters's bass, he holds down the disco groove quite righteously on The Wall.

Love to see a list of what studio tracks he actually plays on.

"Flaming" is so incredible, I love how the recording zigzags through all these different acoustic spaces. Truly psychedelic.

It is indicated that the scarecrow is sadder than the song's narrator, who is obviously himself rather sad. That is twee.

I listened to Atom Heart Mother and all of Saucerful for the first time today. This stuff is so great. (Already know and love Piper and Ummagumma of course.)

Funny how Meddle just keeps sounding better and better as I get older, while all the other mid-period albums (unsurprisingly) start sounding worse and worse.
