Talk about the new Squarepusher...

Just made a run to the supermarket to pick up, er, a shitload of chocolate bars to help me write this Stupid Fucking Overdue Cultural Studies Essay and heard a sick blippy cut-up drum and bass-y track coming out of a nearby car.

I asked him about it, and apparently it's the first single off the new Squarepusher. So, yeah. What do you all think of it?

OCP (OCP), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 11:56 (twenty-two years ago)

And I just saw that it's the featured review on Pitchfork today, so...

OCP (OCP), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 12:06 (twenty-two years ago)

for some reason i always give him another chance. looks like i'm going to do it again. oh well

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 12:08 (twenty-two years ago)

he's like a naughty dog who looks at you with THOSE eyes when you scold him.

sF, Tuesday, 1 October 2002 12:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm looking forward to it, I enjoyed Go Plastic greatly.

It seems that the first track of the new album is his 'Untitled' single renamed, with a bit of "Squarepusher is your fucking daddy," at the start.

Anyone who can 'hook me up' with a bit of this best email me quick smart. :)

Andrew (enneff), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 12:25 (twenty-two years ago)

He does a cover of 'Love Will Tear Us Apart'.

What the fuck!?!

Andrew (enneff), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 12:40 (twenty-two years ago)

hey, so do Bis...whats up with that?

blueski, Tuesday, 1 October 2002 13:25 (twenty-two years ago)

he sucked then, he sucks now.

but it's amazing what one great single can do to redeem you in my eyes.

i will never buy a squarepusher album.

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 13:30 (twenty-two years ago)

whats the great single jess? (red hot car?).

you are wiser than me.

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 13:33 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, "red hot car".

(well, i more or less *lived* with them for a year or two, since an ex owned them all; i tried playing them, and while there were always one or two tracks on the early ones that kinda made me smile, they just felt enervating after a whole play. the less said about the "fusion" album the better, i think.)

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 13:55 (twenty-two years ago)

He hasn't released anything substantially excellent since Hard Normal Daddy, even if his last releases have all had some quality tracks (Iambic 5 Poetry, My Sound, Tomorrow World, Our Underwater Torch, Do You Know... etc. etc.). It's just that his work has gone the way I really don't like in IDM - not enough tunes, too much anal fucking about and showing off that you can make an unlistenable noise in a weird register*. All very clever, but fucking boring. Just because it's supposed to be experimental or "intelligent" *ahem*, doesn't mean that anyone's going to be impressed with the sound of insects being crushed and pasted onto a metal floorboard for 8 and a half minutes.

*autechre are exempt because they still manage to rock, despite being the main perpetrators of this style.

dog latin, Tuesday, 1 October 2002 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Squarepusher's cover of Love With Tell Us Apart is marvellous... a long way from the Tom-Jenkinson-deliberately-fucks-with-the-original-inna-drillnbass-stylee rendition I was expecting. A lot more subdued than the original, with some nice percussion and someone who I think is Squarepusher practically whispering the vocals over the top. Lovely.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I had one squarepusher alb a few years ago. after listening to it i thought he didn't know what the fuck he was doing so I sold it. at least it was on sale. you learn...

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Do You Know Squarepusher of the new album is the best 'IDM' single since Windowlicker.

yeahs, Tuesday, 1 October 2002 18:30 (twenty-two years ago)

i think he plays bass really good. he also programs drums well.

chaki (chaki), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Line from the Pitchfork review:

"There's a beat in there, but it's held together by tempo only-- the actual bass and snare accents are all over the place."

Um, isn't that the point?

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 20:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I think when listening to Squarepusher you've got to really get to know the tracks before you can start enjoying them to their full potential. When you know what's about to happen, and you understand the rhythms, it's really satisfying to hear it.

Strange? Yes.

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 01:53 (twenty-two years ago)

If you're RealPlayered up you can hear a snippet of Ver Pusher right here right now.

Momus (Momus), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 14:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Pitchfork:

Just like Bach, Jenkinson's best stuff gets by not on his calculated pre-production or any meta-cognitive powers of enlightenment, but because on some level, it connects with other people.

o really who writes this stuff o really honestly for goodness sake meta-cognitive powers of enlightenment he will cringe when he turns 17 and rereads that who does he think he is dj pseuky or something?

Momus (Momus), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

HA HA HA HA!!!! when i got that squarepusher alb the fact was that it didn't connect AT ALL, it was sooo fucking average.

fuck all this warp stuff dammit. these bedrooms ppl need to get out more.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 15:07 (twenty-two years ago)

he will cringe when he turns 17 and rereads that who does he think he is dj pseuky or something?

I think "meta-cognitive powers of enlightenment" sounds stupid too. That's why I wrote it, re: Squarepusher's thing about seeing inside other musicians' heads. Props for "he" though.

And Julio, I totally agree!

dleone (dleone), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

''Props for "he" though.''

yeah, absolutely!!!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

this reminds me, i did like journey to needham and iambic 5 poetry as well, he does pull some good tunes out of the bag occasionally

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 3 October 2002 08:07 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, hard normal daddy is still the daddy. i keep buying his new records despite the previous ones too, and also despite the fact he was quite annoying at school.

kieron, Sunday, 6 October 2002 07:49 (twenty-two years ago)

annoying at school? did you go to KEGS too?

michael (michael), Sunday, 6 October 2002 10:53 (twenty-two years ago)

It's strange for me to think that anyone went to school with Tom Jenkinson, or any of the musicians I admire/enjoy. They seem like fictional characters carefully crafted by an unseen artist.

Andrew (enneff), Sunday, 6 October 2002 11:11 (twenty-two years ago)

not only did i go to school with Tom Jenkinson, but my mum taught Mike Oldfield O-level English (his only qualification - he got a 'C'). how's that for celebrity associations? oh and one of her colleagues was Richard's (as in 'and Judy') sister.

admittedly you probably neither admire nor enjoy Mike Oldfield...

michael (michael), Sunday, 6 October 2002 11:28 (twenty-two years ago)

i'd rather be on horseback

"meta-cognitive powers of enlightenment" = how someone wd glom onto "intrinsic artistic value" = this capability don't exist = dominique is in fact taking the same line as you Momus?

(anyway it sure reads jokey to me, but i am a sarcasm-musclebound schlub)

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 6 October 2002 12:08 (twenty-two years ago)

six years pass...

Just A Souvenir (relatively new album) is actually really good guys!

the next grozart, Tuesday, 3 March 2009 18:54 (sixteen years ago)

there's a newer EP than that, "numbers lucent"

cutty, Tuesday, 3 March 2009 21:53 (sixteen years ago)
