Johnny Fever, Friday, 1 February 2013 02:54 (twelve years ago)

Portishead takes this for me by some margin. I like a lot of these, though.

lol Streets

can't see past the Streets here, whole list is a testimony to the enduring quality of genuine Art

Hermann Hesher (Noodle Vague), Friday, 1 February 2013 02:56 (twelve years ago)

Only ones I've heard are Big Boi and Miguel, both great (I'm assuming Piracy Funds Terrorism is different enough from Arular not to count?) so I'll sit this one out, but I hereby pledge to listen, at least halfway through, to whatever wins this poll.

Doctor Casino, Friday, 1 February 2013 03:00 (twelve years ago)

kaputt > third > fever ray > miguel > knife > lcd > streets > mia > kanye > big boi

ciderpress, Friday, 1 February 2013 03:00 (twelve years ago)

Oh and I streamed College Dropout last summer to see what the fuss was about, but I got bored and turned it off I think. Or got drunk and fell asleep.

Doctor Casino, Friday, 1 February 2013 03:01 (twelve years ago)

portishead by a light-year

if lcd sstm win this i'm...jfc i don't even know

imago, Friday, 1 February 2013 03:03 (twelve years ago)

guess fever ray/the knife make it a bit less than a light-year tbf, and the big boi album was cool

imago, Friday, 1 February 2013 03:04 (twelve years ago)

If we'd held a poll for 2003, I imagine Speakerbox/The Love Below would've won. Or maybe Fever to Tell. Or Elephant? I dunno. 2003 was a pretty bountiful year.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 1 February 2013 03:06 (twelve years ago)

The Knife or LCD for me. if i'm feeling nostalgic, The Streets would also get a look-in. none of these are particular favourites of mine.

charlie h, Friday, 1 February 2013 03:07 (twelve years ago)

a strangely isolated place surprise top 5 placement on back of hyperactive imago repping campaign xp

imago, Friday, 1 February 2013 03:08 (twelve years ago)

heh. seems like everyone has a "pet peeve" entry on this list of otherwise beloved albums.

my pet peeve entry is big boi. all other albums i have either loved or respected. my vote went to original pirate material though, with third a close second :3

cocktail onion (fennel cartwright), Friday, 1 February 2013 03:09 (twelve years ago)

I'd rep for that p hard too xp

Johnny Fever, Friday, 1 February 2013 03:09 (twelve years ago)

mia > miguel > yeezy > lcd > protishead > knife > big boi > destroyer > fever ray > streets

The Reverend, Friday, 1 February 2013 03:14 (twelve years ago)

Kish Kash might have won in 2003, but I could imagine it coming in just behind Speakerboxx/TLB.

Best here is Silent Shout followed by Original Pirate Material (yeah I said it).

Tim F, Friday, 1 February 2013 03:15 (twelve years ago)

Kish Kash very well could've won.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 1 February 2013 03:17 (twelve years ago)

This is looney talk, but I may just run a 2003 poll at some point (in the distant future).

Johnny Fever, Friday, 1 February 2013 03:17 (twelve years ago)

Original Pirate Material (yeah I said it)

the knife barely over kanye

call all destroyer, Friday, 1 February 2013 03:18 (twelve years ago)

gonna throw this out there in a bid to cool tempers...scoring albums is for cocks

Hermann Hesher (Noodle Vague), Friday, 1 February 2013 03:21 (twelve years ago)

I suspect that Kish Kash might not win now though - a sound so perfect for 2003 that at the ten year mark it might seem quite unfashionable.

Tim F, Friday, 1 February 2013 03:22 (twelve years ago)

Or, Cox. xp

Johnny Fever, Friday, 1 February 2013 03:22 (twelve years ago)

I still bang around to Kish Kash a couple times a year.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 1 February 2013 03:23 (twelve years ago)

oh yeah it's awesome, that's me trying to sniff mood changes rather than pass judgment

Tim F, Friday, 1 February 2013 03:24 (twelve years ago)

Sure. And that's why doing a end-of-year poll so far removed from the actual year would basically be unpredictable. I'm intrigued, but not entirely sold on the idea (and I have Madonna coming up pretty soon). Someday, maybe.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 1 February 2013 03:26 (twelve years ago)

Kaputt by a country mile

Destroyer but then Silent Shout and Fever Ray.

Bee OK, Friday, 1 February 2013 04:38 (twelve years ago)

the knife > portishead > miguel > fever ray > kanye > destroyer > m.i.a > big boi > lcd soundsystem

i've never heard original pirate material and don't think i'd like it.

monotony, Friday, 1 February 2013 04:45 (twelve years ago)

silent shout > kaleidoscope dream > fever ray > the college dropout >>>>>>>>> arular > sir lucious left foot > third >>>>>>> original pirate material >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> (x infinity, including pretty much everything else in the world) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> kaputt

first four are classics.

arular and lucious are very fun.

third is very admirable but i never want to listen to it and is also the worst portishead album by some distance.

OPM might be better than that but it's been irredeemably sullied by everything skinner did afterwards (and for a lot of what he inspired). literally have no desire ever to listen to it again except maybe "weak become heroes".

kaputt is worthless horseshit and destroyer needs to be taken out back and put out of our misery.

lex pretend, Friday, 1 February 2013 07:38 (twelve years ago)

o i forgot sound of silver. that goes between the streets and destroyer. just a very boring and unremarkable album.

lex pretend, Friday, 1 February 2013 07:39 (twelve years ago)

didn't realise miguel was the first r&b winner!

lex pretend, Friday, 1 February 2013 07:40 (twelve years ago)

Kaputt in a walk.

❏❐❑❒ (gr8080), Friday, 1 February 2013 07:51 (twelve years ago)

i like to think new amerykah was the actual winner of 2008 considering it beat everything in the half decade poll.

prolego, Friday, 1 February 2013 08:21 (twelve years ago)

Fever Ray for me. Never heard of Miguel or Destroyer, all the others in the poll are okay, except for The Streets, which is corny and awful.

I think I've mentioned this before: I bought the Portishead album when it came out due to all the praise, but I was only able to listen to it twice, and it's been sitting on the shelf ever since. It was just so unrelentlessly bleak and grey that I couldn't force myself to play it again. So yeah, in theory it might be a perfect album, but only for someone who enjoys incredibly grim things, and that's not me.

Tuomas, Friday, 1 February 2013 08:31 (twelve years ago)

Sir Lucious is the only one of them that I own and it's awesome so I voted for it. Never heard of Destroyer

paolo, Friday, 1 February 2013 09:16 (twelve years ago)

silent shout was my favourite record of the 00s so that's a hands down vote for me

nathey, Friday, 1 February 2013 09:17 (twelve years ago)

Best to worst:

Kanye
Fever Ray
Miguel
Knife
Portishead
Big Boi
M.I.A.
LCD Soundystem
Destroyer

None of these are terrible although I haven't the Streets one in full, never liked anything Mike Skinner's done. The top four are all classics.

Gavin, Leeds, Friday, 1 February 2013 09:37 (twelve years ago)

Sir Luscious Leftfoot IMO.

dog latin, Friday, 1 February 2013 10:03 (twelve years ago)

Amazing to think the Streets made the count - inconceivable that something so Brit-centric could place so high today.

dog latin, Friday, 1 February 2013 10:04 (twelve years ago)

Before I clicked on the thread title I was about to say Let England Shake, easy, but then I remembered the whole Kaputt unpleasantness. My memory had obviously conducted a recount.

Deafening silence (DL), Friday, 1 February 2013 10:21 (twelve years ago)

I'm still reeling from all that.

dog latin, Friday, 1 February 2013 10:24 (twelve years ago)

It was a transatlantic incident that threatened ILX's special relationship

Deafening silence (DL), Friday, 1 February 2013 10:29 (twelve years ago)

Kaleidoscope Dream > Silent Shout > Arular > Third > Fever Ray >>> Sound of Silver > Sir Luscious Left Foot >>> Original Pirate Material >??>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Being punched in the face >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Kaputt.

I still don't think I've actually heard College Dropout from start to finish.

Matt DC, Friday, 1 February 2013 10:30 (twelve years ago)

Fever Ray - Fever Ray
Portishead - Third
LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver
The Knife - Silent Shout

That's a hell of a run, right there. Don't know much about the rest of them.

that futterwacken you like is back in style (how's life), Friday, 1 February 2013 10:32 (twelve years ago)

If the 2011 poll had not been voted in by cloth-eared fools and Let England Shake had beaten Kaputt that might have taken my #1 vote, but I get more out of the Miguel album than anything else here by quite some distance. And I really like at least half of them.

Matt DC, Friday, 1 February 2013 10:33 (twelve years ago)

iirc we claimed the moral victory for Let England Shake, either due to voting shenanigans or more first-place votes or just a very necessary deus ex machina

lex pretend, Friday, 1 February 2013 10:49 (twelve years ago)

college dropout is actually really good matt

i keep seeing people who think i'm a kanye hater and i'm like no the only reason i hate on MBDTF is because i was a kanye FAN

lex pretend, Friday, 1 February 2013 10:50 (twelve years ago)

So ilxor really loves Kaputt then,

Van Horn Street, Thursday, 7 February 2013 00:25 (twelve years ago)

unsurprisingly this was a very convincing victory

christmas candy bar (al leong), Thursday, 7 February 2013 00:29 (twelve years ago)

This is partly about audience splits I think - I'm betting that a large segment of voters were split not just between Silent Shout and Fever Ray but also those and Third, whereas as a general rule I suspect the kind of voter who would put Kaputt first was not troubled by the lure of any other option.

Tim F, Thursday, 7 February 2013 00:37 (twelve years ago)

the famed "silent shout majority" as it were

christmas candy bar (al leong), Thursday, 7 February 2013 00:38 (twelve years ago)

on the other hand there are also possible errors in voting, in which some people may not have actually seen kaputt listed on the ballot.

christmas candy bar (al leong), Thursday, 7 February 2013 00:39 (twelve years ago)

or accidentally checked off 'the streets' and voted and then immediately cursed, realizing their error.

Streethawk, then Kaputt, then Rubies, Your Blues a distant 4th

Iago Galdston, Thursday, 7 February 2013 00:40 (twelve years ago)

never been curious to hear kaputt, maybe I will now

FTR I think "Kaputt" is a great album but this poll is really about ILM taste factions not greatness.

Tim F, Thursday, 7 February 2013 01:01 (twelve years ago)

Oh this is great. Kaputt beat Fever Ray and Silent Shout combined. Haha. Probably a few spite-voters, then.

Btw I just heard about this book about life behind german lines in WW2 called Kaputt. Do you guys think the name of the record has anything to do with that? It would really bring something to the record, I think, this sense of the living in this world gone completely wrong.

Frederik B, Thursday, 7 February 2013 01:03 (twelve years ago)

hey guys I got this idea, and hear me out because I know there's gonna be some reactions from the tumblrsphere, but do you know what we gotta poll now? Destroyer vs. Weird Al Yankovic.

xp Yes, Frederik, the Malaparte novel is where the Destroyer alb title comes from

Iago Galdston, Thursday, 7 February 2013 01:18 (twelve years ago)

Thanks. Never knew that. Intriguing.

Frederik B, Thursday, 7 February 2013 01:23 (twelve years ago)

Maybe some people voted for it higher than they truly rate it in order to make a point.

mookieproof, Thursday, 7 February 2013 01:38 (twelve years ago)

detrimental to the legitimacy of the entire list

lex pretend, Thursday, 7 February 2013 08:14 (twelve years ago)

I only heard one of these all the way through and it' was terrible

(it wasn't destroyer)

lyhqtu, Thursday, 7 February 2013 08:30 (twelve years ago)

don't be coy

mookieproof, Thursday, 7 February 2013 08:39 (twelve years ago)

think we probably should run this vote on a weekly basis really. we're just not finding a clear mean accuracy as regards our views on albums of the last decade.

Ballboy to Afghanistan (LocalGarda), Thursday, 7 February 2013 09:34 (twelve years ago)

Separate up-or-down polls on each of the albums should give us more visibility into what's going on "in there". Weekly, I agree.

Andrew Farrell, Thursday, 7 February 2013 09:41 (twelve years ago)

might change my vote to kanye next week

The Reverend, Thursday, 7 February 2013 09:46 (twelve years ago)

if this poll were re-taken next week i'd pick Kaputt

❏❐❑❒ (gr8080), Thursday, 7 February 2013 10:03 (twelve years ago)

plus it'd be nice if everyone could win even if only for one week xpost

Ballboy to Afghanistan (LocalGarda), Thursday, 7 February 2013 10:03 (twelve years ago)

each album should be polled against each of the others one at a time, twice, football league style.

Jaap and roids (NickB), Thursday, 7 February 2013 10:13 (twelve years ago)

we should all make shirts and flags to support the albums we are backing each week.

Ballboy to Afghanistan (LocalGarda), Thursday, 7 February 2013 10:14 (twelve years ago)

that would be 90 more polls in total i think xp

i want a silent shout/third half-and-half scarf

Jaap and roids (NickB), Thursday, 7 February 2013 10:15 (twelve years ago)

we could have former musicians live chatting about the polls as they happen, and watching individual polls, reporting the action to the fans.

Ballboy to Afghanistan (LocalGarda), Thursday, 7 February 2013 10:18 (twelve years ago)

Bottom two finishers get relegated and replaced by two records from the rymans metal poll league

Jaap and roids (NickB), Thursday, 7 February 2013 10:24 (twelve years ago)

it all sounds amazing.

Ballboy to Afghanistan (LocalGarda), Thursday, 7 February 2013 10:26 (twelve years ago)

all sounds like a dream to me

❏❐❑❒ (gr8080), Thursday, 7 February 2013 10:31 (twelve years ago)

only way to settle this thing. i don't think destroyer travelling up to meet big boi on a wintery sunday afternoon is an easy fixture in anyone's book

Jaap and roids (NickB), Thursday, 7 February 2013 10:42 (twelve years ago)

voted kaputt for a laugh. paid in full.

nashwan, Thursday, 7 February 2013 11:43 (twelve years ago)

throwing this out there, would there be any interest in a favourite poll of 2012 poll?

Ballboy to Afghanistan (LocalGarda), Thursday, 7 February 2013 13:35 (twelve years ago)

i'd need about 50 votes to make it worth doing

Ballboy to Afghanistan (LocalGarda), Thursday, 7 February 2013 13:36 (twelve years ago)

eleven months pass...

What the fuck is this shit. What the shit
