Portishead takes this for me by some margin. I like a lot of these, though.

can't see past the Streets here, whole list is a testimony to the enduring quality of genuine Art

Only ones I've heard are Big Boi and Miguel, both great (I'm assuming Piracy Funds Terrorism is different enough from Arular not to count?) so I'll sit this one out, but I hereby pledge to listen, at least halfway through, to whatever wins this poll.

Oh and I streamed College Dropout last summer to see what the fuss was about, but I got bored and turned it off I think. Or got drunk and fell asleep.

If we'd held a poll for 2003, I imagine Speakerbox/The Love Below would've won. Or maybe Fever to Tell. Or Elephant? I dunno. 2003 was a pretty bountiful year.

The Knife or LCD for me. if i'm feeling nostalgic, The Streets would also get a look-in. none of these are particular favourites of mine.

my pet peeve entry is big boi. all other albums i have either loved or respected. my vote went to original pirate material though, with third a close second :3

Sure. And that's why doing a end-of-year poll so far removed from the actual year would basically be unpredictable. I'm intrigued, but not entirely sold on the idea (and I have Madonna coming up pretty soon). Someday, maybe.

first four are classics.

arular and lucious are very fun.

third is very admirable but i never want to listen to it and is also the worst portishead album by some distance.

OPM might be better than that but it's been irredeemably sullied by everything skinner did afterwards (and for a lot of what he inspired). literally have no desire ever to listen to it again except maybe "weak become heroes".

kaputt is worthless horseshit and destroyer needs to be taken out back and put out of our misery.

o i forgot sound of silver. that goes between the streets and destroyer. just a very boring and unremarkable album.

i like to think new amerykah was the actual winner of 2008 considering it beat everything in the half decade poll.

Fever Ray for me. Never heard of Miguel or Destroyer, all the others in the poll are okay, except for The Streets, which is corny and awful.

I think I've mentioned this before: I bought the Portishead album when it came out due to all the praise, but I was only able to listen to it twice, and it's been sitting on the shelf ever since. It was just so unrelentlessly bleak and grey that I couldn't force myself to play it again. So yeah, in theory it might be a perfect album, but only for someone who enjoys incredibly grim things, and that's not me.

Sir Lucious is the only one of them that I own and it's awesome so I voted for it. Never heard of Destroyer

silent shout was my favourite record of the 00s so that's a hands down vote for me

None of these are terrible although I haven't the Streets one in full, never liked anything Mike Skinner's done. The top four are all classics.

If the 2011 poll had not been voted in by cloth-eared fools and Let England Shake had beaten Kaputt that might have taken my #1 vote, but I get more out of the Miguel album than anything else here by quite some distance. And I really like at least half of them.

iirc we claimed the moral victory for Let England Shake, either due to voting shenanigans or more first-place votes or just a very necessary deus ex machina

This is partly about audience splits I think - I'm betting that a large segment of voters were split not just between Silent Shout and Fever Ray but also those and Third, whereas as a general rule I suspect the kind of voter who would put Kaputt first was not troubled by the lure of any other option.

Btw I just heard about this book about life behind german lines in WW2 called Kaputt. Do you guys think the name of the record has anything to do with that? It would really bring something to the record, I think, this sense of the living in this world gone completely wrong.

think we probably should run this vote on a weekly basis really. we're just not finding a clear mean accuracy as regards our views on albums of the last decade.

Separate up-or-down polls on each of the albums should give us more visibility into what's going on "in there". Weekly, I agree.
