The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Friday, 1 February 2013 17:32 (twelve years ago)

1996 was probably one of the more memorable Brit Awards, for various reasons. I have a feeling a lot of cocaine was done that year.

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Friday, 1 February 2013 17:34 (twelve years ago)

the 80s ones are still far worse than the 90s ones

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Friday, 1 February 2013 17:35 (twelve years ago)

haha how did Natalie Imbruglia win a breakthrough act award two years after her hit single

did you guys actually pay attention to her after "Torn"?

Ima R.A.E.D. (DJP), Friday, 1 February 2013 17:36 (twelve years ago)

Nirvana won best breakthrough act in 93.

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Friday, 1 February 2013 17:36 (twelve years ago)

it's how the brit awards roll

tbf they are held in february

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Friday, 1 February 2013 17:37 (twelve years ago)

no excuse for 2 years out of date though. Except its the brit awards.

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Friday, 1 February 2013 17:37 (twelve years ago)

dan did you ever hear about the car crash that was the 1989 awards?

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Friday, 1 February 2013 17:38 (twelve years ago)

haha no but the wiki blurb makes it sound amazing

Ima R.A.E.D. (DJP), Friday, 1 February 2013 17:39 (twelve years ago)

Was 1989 the Mick Fleetwood/Samantha Fox one?

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Friday, 1 February 2013 17:41 (twelve years ago)

never has there been such an incompetent live show broadcast on UK TV as that

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Friday, 1 February 2013 17:42 (twelve years ago)

oh yes.

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Friday, 1 February 2013 17:42 (twelve years ago)

Yeah, I've always cringed whenever I've seen footage of that!

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Friday, 1 February 2013 17:43 (twelve years ago)

i saw it live on tv. Yet it was entertaining in the way its never been since

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Friday, 1 February 2013 17:44 (twelve years ago)

look at the 80s ones alone. Words fail me

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Friday, 1 February 2013 17:44 (twelve years ago)

Christ, look at 1986!

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Friday, 1 February 2013 17:50 (twelve years ago)

yeah I voted 86!

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Friday, 1 February 2013 17:50 (twelve years ago)

That was the year I went off pop music big style.

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Friday, 1 February 2013 17:50 (twelve years ago)

fucking live aid

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Friday, 1 February 2013 17:51 (twelve years ago)

Also LOL at Spandau Ballet winning the "Sony award for technical excellence" in 1984.

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Friday, 1 February 2013 17:51 (twelve years ago)

yeah, 86 was truly a bad year to be 18 in.
as i said to AG elsewhere, thank f*ck acid house was just around the corner ...

mark e, Friday, 1 February 2013 17:59 (twelve years ago)

I feel like I'm being led somewhat, but '86 really doesn't have anything to save it. '89 is pretty terrible, too, but not quite as bad. Gonna have to browse through the more recent ones, surely there's got to be something to equal that nadir.

emil.y, Friday, 1 February 2013 18:04 (twelve years ago)

its hard to imagine

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Friday, 1 February 2013 18:07 (twelve years ago)

Lol, 2007 - International breakthrough act: Orson.

emil.y, Friday, 1 February 2013 18:07 (twelve years ago)

Dave Stewart has never been best producer, any year!

Mark G, Friday, 1 February 2013 18:09 (twelve years ago)

2012 was pretty lame mind you

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Friday, 1 February 2013 18:11 (twelve years ago)

Has there been a Good one?

Mark G, Friday, 1 February 2013 18:14 (twelve years ago)

that's true

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Friday, 1 February 2013 18:24 (twelve years ago)

94 is pretty bad

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Friday, 1 February 2013 18:33 (twelve years ago)

infact they all are.

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Friday, 1 February 2013 18:34 (twelve years ago)

But the burning question is: which one is the WORST!?

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Friday, 1 February 2013 18:36 (twelve years ago)

im sticking with 86 just because. I do hope every year gets a vote though

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Friday, 1 February 2013 18:37 (twelve years ago)

the best british rock act award only lasted 3 years. Look who won it

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Friday, 1 February 2013 18:38 (twelve years ago)

The best one is probably the 1992 one with the KLF & Extreme Noise Terror

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Friday, 1 February 2013 18:40 (twelve years ago)

awards winners wise though?

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Friday, 1 February 2013 18:41 (twelve years ago)

Not going to look tbh

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Friday, 1 February 2013 18:42 (twelve years ago)

oh but you should.

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Friday, 1 February 2013 18:46 (twelve years ago)

I bet the grammy awards arent as bad as these

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Friday, 1 February 2013 18:46 (twelve years ago)

I dunno, like, Jethro Tull winning a heavy metal grammy takes the cake!

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Friday, 1 February 2013 18:52 (twelve years ago)

Lol, really? I like the Tull, but... heavy metal?

Don't the grammies have awards for literally every conceivable genre/instrument/type of humanity, too? So, like, you could win for "Best Male Baby Grindcore Kazoo Solo" or something?

emil.y, Friday, 1 February 2013 18:53 (twelve years ago)

yeh they won the first ever heavy metal grammy

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Friday, 1 February 2013 18:56 (twelve years ago)

....in 1989

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Friday, 1 February 2013 18:56 (twelve years ago)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grammy_Award_for_Best_Hard_Rock/Metal_Performance_Vocal_or_Instrumental

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Friday, 1 February 2013 18:57 (twelve years ago)

It is not known if Chuck Eddy had a vote that year.

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Friday, 1 February 2013 18:59 (twelve years ago)

There was a bit of a controversy over it, because most people thought Metallica were going to win it. In fact, Metallica's record company were so sure they were going to win it, they printed up "Grammy Winner" stickers for ...And Justice For All. Then Jethro Tull won.

And then Jethro Tull's record company responded with this...

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Friday, 1 February 2013 19:01 (twelve years ago)

hah

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Saturday, 2 February 2013 08:06 (twelve years ago)

all of the 89 show used to be on You Tube in full but here's 2 choice moments

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=szbhlJYheXA

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NQILf5QntPE

the booing that Sir Cliff refers to came from the gaggle of kids that were packed in front of the stage. they don't do that anymore and instead pipe in screaming audience crowd noise to add some kind of atmosphere, which fools no-one every time it cuts to the actual crowd of bored looking journos and producers and label hacks and whatnot.

piscesx, Saturday, 2 February 2013 14:09 (twelve years ago)

"Professionally known as" i.e. "changing their surnames"

Mark G, Wednesday, 20 February 2013 10:37 (twelve years ago)

Who do they think will win this year?

Vote in the ILM 70s poll please! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Wednesday, 20 February 2013 10:46 (twelve years ago)

Also what year did you vote as worst?

Vote in the ILM 70s poll please! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Wednesday, 20 February 2013 10:47 (twelve years ago)

The atmosphere/mood of the '89 one is so odd.

Voted 2011 because Plan B's performance that year was one of the most pitiful things I'd ever seen.

Gavin, Leeds, Wednesday, 20 February 2013 10:53 (twelve years ago)

not seen it. Got a link? was the whole show as bad though? 89 is clearly the worst yet was entertaining. Something the others have never been.

Vote in the ILM 70s poll please! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Wednesday, 20 February 2013 10:54 (twelve years ago)

Alice is into Jake Bugg thesedays, so she'll be dead chuffed if he gets one/some. Which he probably will.

Amber is part of the ginger unification, but I don't think Ed Sheeran is getting owt.

Did I vote worst? Whichever year they discovered Eurythmics should be getting loads of awards, that one.

Mark G, Wednesday, 20 February 2013 10:54 (twelve years ago)

Not a fan then?

Vote in the ILM 70s poll please! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Wednesday, 20 February 2013 11:01 (twelve years ago)

what, of the Euryths? No.

Mark G, Wednesday, 20 February 2013 11:03 (twelve years ago)

Dave Stewart got best producer in 86. Annie Lennox got best female solo artist that year too

Vote in the ILM 70s poll please! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Wednesday, 20 February 2013 11:03 (twelve years ago)

He got it again in 87

Vote in the ILM 70s poll please! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Wednesday, 20 February 2013 11:04 (twelve years ago)

Actually he got a bunch of best producer awards and annie lennox got tons of best solo awards but cant see any Eurythmics awards until 1999 Outstanding contribution: Eurythmics. So they never realy won anything.

Vote in the ILM 70s poll please! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Wednesday, 20 February 2013 11:06 (twelve years ago)

They 'weren't a group' or that the "best group" had some actual good groups in, or something..

They got passed over for "solo" awards because they weren't solo.

To be fair, they were the sort-of act that the rec execs would listen to at home for their own pleasure, so hey.

Mark G, Wednesday, 20 February 2013 11:09 (twelve years ago)

dire straits and sade had record execs home listening awards covered i suppose

Vote in the ILM 70s poll please! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Wednesday, 20 February 2013 11:10 (twelve years ago)

ah.. "i saw the great minds of my generation destroyed by Brothers in Arms Dire Straits"....

Mark G, Wednesday, 20 February 2013 11:13 (twelve years ago)

not seen it. Got a link? was the whole show as bad though?

It was definitely the nadir but the whole thing was so mediocre - nothing as funny as e.g. Boy George as the Four Tops.

Here's the Plan B clip: http://youtu.be/M75NOWpxsVE

Gavin, Leeds, Wednesday, 20 February 2013 11:23 (twelve years ago)

Too awesome: We were watching it w/inlaws, grandad was like "whoa!! some people are invading the stage with guns!! Looka!!""

Mark G, Wednesday, 20 February 2013 11:24 (twelve years ago)

(Was there a "Best" poll? Did it get won by the KLF/Extreme Noise Terror one, too easy?)

Mark G, Wednesday, 20 February 2013 11:25 (twelve years ago)

oof look at the winners in 2001

Better than most "picks" of that kind, to be fair..

Wrongs:
1977, 1986, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1997, 2001 (who?), 2007, 2008, 2009 (who'd have guessed?)

A fair few of those had almost no further hits after their award, let's say.

Mark G, Wednesday, 20 February 2013 11:43 (twelve years ago)

I don't even know who Julie Covington is but I assumed the 1977 awards was more a classical thing as it was for the queens silver jubilee

She was the 'lead' in Rock Follies, had a hit with "Don't cry for me Arg", in 1978 did Alice Cooper's "Only Women Bleed" which made the charts. But she was mainly a stage actress/singer, so sacked the 'pop career'..

Mark G, Wednesday, 20 February 2013 11:47 (twelve years ago)

A1 were a boyband iirc

That much I recall.

During his three-year tenure, Joseph has overseen some of the biggest changes in Brits' history: the venue changed to the O2, artists were included in the voting academy, a greater emphasis was given to album of the year, and the Brits statue was designed by well-known artists, this year featuring Damien Hirst's trademark spots.

"It think we've achieved everything we set out to do, we started off saying it was a bit chaotic and we wanted to make it more about music than about a TV show," he said. "I think we did manage to make it more like the Grammys, with more gravitas."

[/b]He denied suggestions the awards were too safe. "If people are looking for explosive controversy, we still don't know what's going to happen on the night. I'm not encouraging stage invasions, but they are magical moments that happen; no one has control over that.
"The lineup goes from pop to discovery to indie. It's not dull; it's a brilliant showcase for music."[/b]

The Brits remain important as a showcase for a certain moment in music, he said. "Shop windows and curation are massively needed when there is so much media fragmentation. Plus fans, viewers and, most importantly, artists love awards."
