Fantastic!
― Tim F, Monday, 4 February 2013 10:05 (twelve years ago)
is this the album? is it out finally? PSYCHED
― just sayin, Monday, 4 February 2013 10:12 (twelve years ago)
Out in a couple of weeks apparently? I'm hoping for something widescreen and kaleidoscopic here.
― Matt DC, Monday, 4 February 2013 10:27 (twelve years ago)
hopes fulfilled
― Tim F, Monday, 4 February 2013 10:34 (twelve years ago)
is it mountainsish?
― ogmor, Monday, 4 February 2013 10:35 (twelve years ago)
a lot of my friends were at the launch in p-bar at the weekend, mayer played, couldn't afford it and they were all texting yday, really annoying to miss it.
― Ballboy to Afghanistan (LocalGarda), Monday, 4 February 2013 10:40 (twelve years ago)
i was sort of disappointed by this album
― lex pretend, Monday, 4 February 2013 11:10 (twelve years ago)
there's just not as much...character, or inventiveness, as the singles to date
― lex pretend, Monday, 4 February 2013 11:11 (twelve years ago)

If by Mountainsish you mean lots of those trademark repeating patterns winding around one another with these gorgeous and unexpected furlings e.g. the way that "Primative People" (not a spelling mistake) opens up with these gorgeously melancholy layered synth chords, or how "Moments of Truth" is like wandering through a cave filled with crystal prisms and gradually realising you're on another planet entirely, or how "Dreaming Youth" is oddly reminiscent of early Bel Canto.
The whole thing strikes me as if Air circa Talkie Walkie tried to make a tech-house album.
― Tim F, Monday, 4 February 2013 12:31 (twelve years ago)
Definitely anticipating this...that's not the artwork though, is it?
― questino (seandalai), Monday, 4 February 2013 12:35 (twelve years ago)
Haha no:

― Tim F, Monday, 4 February 2013 12:39 (twelve years ago)
Kind of a late-90s/early-00s vibe from that cover? Doesn't feel like it fits in with current artwork trends (not that that's necessarily a bad thing).
Had a nice chat with Mano when I was home for Christmas - very friendly guy.
― questino (seandalai), Monday, 4 February 2013 12:45 (twelve years ago)
It's a bit 'Erland Oye Mix CD' that cover.
― Matt DC, Monday, 4 February 2013 12:46 (twelve years ago)
Well he sings on the album in a dude from Piano Magic sounding frail kind of way so I guess that's not necessarily the wrong vibe to imply.
― Tim F, Monday, 4 February 2013 12:47 (twelve years ago)
stoked
― flopson, Monday, 4 February 2013 15:59 (twelve years ago)
here's his set from the album launch:

I'm halfway through listening to that - it's really good for working to.
― brogue element (seandalai), Friday, 8 February 2013 14:02 (twelve years ago)
great mix
― karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Friday, 8 February 2013 20:11 (twelve years ago)
"Mano Le Tough?" Jesus.
― Uncle Sam is... ...No Daddy! (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Saturday, 9 February 2013 04:11 (twelve years ago)
Hmmm... vocals.
― MikoMcha, Saturday, 23 February 2013 19:07 (twelve years ago)
yep
― just sayin, Saturday, 23 February 2013 22:52 (twelve years ago)
yeah, have to agree
― marc robot (seandalai), Saturday, 23 February 2013 23:05 (twelve years ago)
The vocals bothered me on the first few listens but i normalized them after that.
Kinda funny though that the best track has the worst vocals.
― Tim F, Saturday, 23 February 2013 23:07 (twelve years ago)
still haven't heard this but i liked the use of vocals on the tracks on that most recent panorama bar mix, assuming some of those are his
― flopson, Saturday, 23 February 2013 23:23 (twelve years ago)
vocals are weak but generally not distractingly so. only a couple of listens but have to second the 'disappointed' sentiments. i do like 'primative people' though.
― balls, Saturday, 23 February 2013 23:41 (twelve years ago)
Mostly I just don't think the material here is as strong as on the 12"s that came out in 2011/2012, which is a pity given that more people are going to be paying attention this time. Vocals definitely aren't his strong point but they worked well on e.g. "Stories".
― marc robot (seandalai), Saturday, 23 February 2013 23:52 (twelve years ago)
I think their use here is basically comparable to their use on Stories.
Seriously though listen to this more than a couple of times. It's pleasant enough that it's easy to assume it's yielded up all its secrets in one or two goes but the tunes are generally much denser than before and need more attention to fully unlock.
― Tim F, Sunday, 24 February 2013 02:02 (twelve years ago)
Like, if you're only half paying attention to it then "Everything You've Done Before" just sounds nice, but it's actually probably the most dense and involving piece he's done to date.
― Tim F, Sunday, 24 February 2013 02:05 (twelve years ago)
first listen didn't do it for me. it's got a slower, kinda warm vibe, like fin or the occasional nicolas jaar track. i guess i don't find it particularly warm despite trying for density and lushness. the hivern stuff feels organic, this just feels tinny.
i'll give it another spin though
― cocktail onion (fennel cartwright), Sunday, 24 February 2013 06:29 (twelve years ago)
i don't really mind the vox, with seandalai pretty much
don't hear much dense or involving about "everything you've done before" though that is prob as close to a standout as the album gets and the piano line is nicely hypnotic
― lex pretend, Sunday, 24 February 2013 09:00 (twelve years ago)
i just listened again with my FULL ATTENTION and still not hearing anything special, soz
― lex pretend, Sunday, 24 February 2013 09:07 (twelve years ago)
i enjoyed this a lot and am pleased that talabot upgrades are available on a 12 month contract. perhaps not as immediately portentous as the latter but i found it richly, subtly textured and similarly engrossing
have changed the cover art to tim's og post though cos the actual one is fucking horrid
― r|t|c, Sunday, 24 February 2013 14:56 (twelve years ago)
it's a shame to pick anything out really but 'a thing from above' is partic splendid (the air-iest cut i guess) and the one track the whole would suffer most without imo
one listen as yet though tbf
― r|t|c, Sunday, 24 February 2013 15:08 (twelve years ago)
'A Thing From Above' is amazing, it's the one that made my ears prick up when I was listening not-particularly-closely for the first time. That and the strings on the title track, and I like 'The Sea Inside'.
My frustrations with this are similar to the ones I had with Fin, both records are ostensibly melodic, not too concerned with the dancefloor, but curiously reluctant to really go all out for the melodic opulence of those early singles and remixes.
― Matt DC, Sunday, 24 February 2013 17:37 (twelve years ago)
I'm somewhere in the middle I guess, liking the album but agree that it doesn't match the singles. Vocals bugged my on the first couple of tracks but they get toned down a bit after that I think. "Dreaming Youth" probably my favorite track on this. It's been rainy here the last few days and this album suited the mood.
― dmr, Thursday, 28 February 2013 16:50 (twelve years ago)
this is on spotify now gonna listen in the next few days. in the meantime this remix has corkscrewed itself into my brain:

i love this
― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 5 March 2013 17:47 (twelve years ago)
it's amazing how often someone has recommended a track to me and i've realized "oh this was on the dixon/ame boiler room mix"
― eris bueller (lukas), Wednesday, 6 March 2013 20:20 (twelve years ago)
Haha agreed
― Tim F, Wednesday, 6 March 2013 20:41 (twelve years ago)
pleased that talabot upgrades are available on a 12 month contract
lol & otm. This reminds me of the talabot lp in that it's a split-second comedown from the singles followed by a protracted infatuation

I've heard a few Mano Le Tough mixes now and he always seems to have amazing taste.
This album is really good for a hangover.
― boxedjoy, Wednesday, 27 March 2013 22:47 (twelve years ago)
Playing in SF Friday.
― errant flynn, Thursday, 28 March 2013 04:12 (twelve years ago)
Tim F what was your favorite track?
im taking time to catch up on all the nonrap ive been missing
― rap steve gadd (D-40), Sunday, 11 August 2013 21:38 (eleven years ago)
"Primitive People" (the corniest but still the best) and "Everything You've Done Before".
But Deej actually better than this and more essential for the catching up are the following Young Marco tracks: "Darwin in Bahia", "Video Days", "Later Than U Think".
― Tim F, Monday, 12 August 2013 13:11 (eleven years ago)
whats the deal w/ his new album? https://www.xlr8r.com/features/2015/11/interview-mano-le-tough/
― just sayin, Friday, 6 November 2015 10:19 (nine years ago)
i mean, has anyone heard it, is it good
― just sayin, Friday, 6 November 2015 10:20 (nine years ago)
Only heard it once but the main thing that struck me was I wasn't keen on his decision to sing
― I am using your worlds, Friday, 6 November 2015 11:04 (nine years ago)
anytime a techno producer decides to sing, it will be a disaster. glad I know his ego has gotten the better of him, won't bother with this at all now.
― brotherlovesdub, Friday, 6 November 2015 19:45 (nine years ago)
haven't digested this properly yet, there are some good tracks but I don't think either of his albums stand up to his (stellar imo) EPs.
