Depeche Mode Remixes 81-04: POLL

The most remix-friendly band ever? To keep things simple I've stuck to the 81-04 3CD tracklisting (sorry DJP, no Happiest Girl). Some contemporaneous classics, some retrospective efforts, some genius, some filler. Apart from K&D's Useless I can't predict which ones will do well but I have a soft spot for Adrian Sherwood, Francois Kevorkian, Beatmasters, Portishead, Rex the Dog, Ewan Pearson, DJ Shadow and Air.

'Useless', the Kruder & Dorfmeister session. Brilliant stuff - prefer it to the original, even!

It's funny how this poll arrived while I was just listening to the 'Grungy Gonads' mix of 'Walking In My Shoes'!

"Painkiller (Judas Priest Remix)"

Loud guitars shit all over "Bette Davis Eyes" (NYCNative), Monday, 4 February 2013 16:07 (twelve years ago)

Did K+D ever do anything half as good? I think I tried some of their other sessions once and iirc it was all ugh loungecore.

ledge, Monday, 4 February 2013 16:45 (twelve years ago)

You might like their Bug Powder Dust remix. Similar mood.

Deafening silence (DL), Monday, 4 February 2013 16:47 (twelve years ago)

The non-compilation vocal version of the Rex the Dog mix is one of my favorites

Fraid not. Can't put my finger on it exactly but to me the Useless mix sounds all downbeat, Bug Powder Dust all up. Could be to do with the mood of the original tracks themselves (I adore Bug Powder Dust fwiw) but I can see the bassline in the BPD mix being played by some horrible white dreadlocked grinning funk hippie, don't get that from Useless. (fyi I don't really dig the way the Useless mix shifts gears for the final two minutes.)

"Master and Servant (An ON-USound Science Fiction Dance Hall Classic)" – 4:35 (Adrian Sherwood, 1984)

my first on-u record.

and given that i probably still listen to on-u more than anything else i think its clear where my vote will go.

not only that, but this remix is f*cking amazing ..

So so so good

Stcking my hand up for Jack Dangers' bleepy, breakbeaty Rush, which makes one of my favourite SOFAD tracks even better. Same goes for Portishead's In Your Room. Still don't know what to vote for in my own poll.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

My top three by some distance are Ulrich Schnauss, K+D, and Rex the Dog. Ok the Rush mix is pretty massive but it loses points for holding off on the amazing post-chorus howl the first two times around. And I get a wry grin from the bizarro world hard rock Mode of the Headcleaner and Linkin Park mixes.

Btw what is the Ewan Pearson ref up there all about?

ledge, Thursday, 7 February 2013 09:46 (twelve years ago)

My mistake. A couple of the best remixes that came out on 12" to go with the album - Pearson's Enjoy the Silence and Black Strobe's Something to Do - weren't actually on the album.
