The new punk rock or -- all hat and no cattle?

Dud. I'd take the Silver Apples, the Oranges Band, All Natural Lemon and Lime Flavors, Moby Grape, Outrageous Cherry or even Bananarama over them any day.

I can't sort out who Peaches are. Peaches & Herb are pretty classic.

Otis Wheeler, Wednesday, 9 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Time for a SERIOUS ANSWER, damn you. Sort of.

One of those records where I got it, and the first listen was "Wow" and then it's not really made much impact on me since. The sound is good, the pose is OK, the Le-Tigre-meets-Supercollider vibe of the album is certainly novel....but it fails the put-it-on-a-lot test. Except for "Fuck The Pain Away" with its sudden sex/politics/therapy switches (and nasty beat) which has been on my playlists since purchase.

Incidentally I got it on the same day as Booty Super Party by Various Artists, and took both home to play to Isabel, who can be much more bullshit-detecting than me, as she cares so little about music. BSP was "the best CD you've ever bought"; Peaches (put on just after) was "trying too hard". She was wrong about BSP but I think she summed Peaches up nicely - a heap of potential, though, and more classic than dud by far.

Me, I think they ought to take the guitars off the leash and really let them run. And play with the dynamics a lot more. Totally right-on about the put-it-on-again factor. More of a proof of concept. Peaches aren't (isn't?) law-givers. This record is even less written in stone than your Chix on Speed or standard electro track. It's anti-canon. But it's pro-smashing-things-up-and-swirling-them-around and it doesn't take its unnamed genre for granted. Nothing on the record sounds finished, either sonically or conceptually. I wish they'd spent a little more time on the sonics but as far as the concept goes I am positively lathered at the possibilities. The Chicks on Speed always sounded to me like art-school girls singing over someone else's electro beats which is in fact exactly what they are. The Teaches of Peaches really makes me fear for my skin, as unformed and lazily sketched as the songs are.

So, uh, it's good but I don't like it?

Well this single is still really amazing. I will never shake this song.

xpost - sick of the song

It was hip three years ago when it was on that hipster soundtrack

MaGoGo, Friday, 31 August 2007 00:49 (eighteen years ago)

BTW, I'm a Peaches fan, but that song is lame.

MaGoGo, Friday, 31 August 2007 00:49 (eighteen years ago)

Where's the classic Peaches ambiguity?!

MaGoGo, Friday, 31 August 2007 00:49 (eighteen years ago)

You really think so? I'm not sick of that song at all. I didn't know it was on a soundtrack though, and I take it in small doses. Recommend me some songs plz.

humansuit, Friday, 31 August 2007 00:56 (eighteen years ago)

my fave Peaches

AAA/XXX (from the 1st one)
Operate (from Fatherfucker)
Downtown (from Impeach)

worth noting that upon comparison these songs seem to be a bit more, uh, understated than the bulk of her catalog. I think "trying too hard", "wasted potential", and "some fascinating moments" all apply to her. It's really surprising to me that there are so few threads about Peaches (and mostly old ones) compared to MIA.

sleeve, Friday, 31 August 2007 01:09 (eighteen years ago)

that should be AA/XXX btw.

sleeve, Friday, 31 August 2007 01:09 (eighteen years ago)

obliged.

humansuit, Friday, 31 August 2007 01:10 (eighteen years ago)

"it fails the put-it-on-a-lot test" is her epitaph, but it's not a damning one i don't think

Tracer Hand, Friday, 31 August 2007 10:38 (eighteen years ago)

Like most everybody else who cares, I'm on the fence. First record = classic. Fatherfucker = 1/2 great, 1/2 crap - Iggy collab is one of the most embarassing things I've ever heard. Impeach continues the decline, but has its moments. Sleeve 100% OTM about Operate and "trying too hard". Relative restraint makes it the best song on Fatherfucker.

Despite all musical shortcomings, Peaches herself = KLASSIK with a kay. She's fucking awesome - as a performer, as an icon, as kick-ass thing on this too seldom kick-ass planet. I remove my hat to her.

Bob Standard, Friday, 31 August 2007 15:47 (eighteen years ago)

She rubs your hat on her crotch and returns it.

The 'anti-jukebox musical' written, directed by and starring, Peaches, tells the story of a young woman who, inspired by a 65-year-old stripper, begins to make sexually forthright music. Her popularity grows and she becomes what her fans expect her to be: transsexual. She falls in love with a beautiful she-male, but gets her heart broken and then ventures on a path of self-discovery.
