They are probably the tamest act on Warp at the moment and their latest album "Mind Elevation" is practically pure pop. What do you make of George Evelyn and his motley crue of student pleasing pot-pushers? What is good what is crap?

reefer madness.

search 'Smokers Delight' - the first album - not sure you'd need the later ones altho 'Finer' and 'Morse' from 'Carboot Soul' werent too bad...Evelyn seems obssessed with remaking Quincy Jones' 'Summer In The City' on every album but i cant decide whether 'Les Nuits' improves on 'Nights Interlude' let alone the original

definitely check out 'Aftermath' and 'Sal Batardes'- the first singles/tracks and a far cry from their recent stuff...Aftermath is one of the darkest, moodiest classic bleep tracks evah featuring that extraordinary 'reverse breaking glass' sound effect

'Aftermath' might not sound like a big deal now but i remember at the time it was really one of those 'What the hell is this?!' tracks/moments

blueski, Tuesday, 1 October 2002 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Les Nuits makes me mess my pants everytime - it's that good.

james devon, Tuesday, 1 October 2002 16:15 (twenty-two years ago)

'aftermath' still sounds fresh to me, 'smoker's delight' disappointed.

stevo (stevo), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Much as I love Les Nuits, even the NAME 'Smokers Delight' puts me off.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I reckon they sound better now than they ever have, in a way, but that's prolly cos i love it when non-pop acts suddenly and unexpectedly go pop (cf. squarepusher).

"Know My Name" is ace, and next single "70s 80s" is just as good - total feelgood summer-ska stuff with ace lyrics/vox by LSK.

Nice fella too - interviewed him a few weeks back and he expressed a certain regret about pigeon-holing himself into the tokers ghetto.

Aftermath is the business, dont like anything else though...

has anyone seen the video to aftermath, with that huge weird inflatable baby thing at a rave?

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 07:13 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, it was directed by jarvis cocker.

my only gripe with 'a word of science' is that the version of 'aftermath' is about 3 1/2 minutes long while there's these anonymous bleep tracks which get dragged out over 7-8.

search also the lfo remix of 'aftermath' (which i, regretably, sold).

i forgot, 'happiness' is pretty cool, too.

I'll add to this debate....this tune sounds top without drugs. I just happened to dance a lot better listening to it ON drugs...£20 quid a pop sounds right to me man. Even a half of a Dove would piss all over any 'pill' recently...some of you youngsters on here don't seem to understand that getting wasted had a deeper meaning back then, sense of community, a house nation that only WE were part of at the time

weird that that was their calling card then so much of what they did afterwards was so underpowered. some of it's good, of course but not at that level at all.
