was reading an old fanzine I wrote for and realized the summer of '89 was a pretty banging time for shows

and even tho I panned about 80% of them, I still want to know which one do you dig the mostest?

it's a miracle the butthole surfers aren't on this list tbh, seemed like they were coming through town on a quarterly basis

unprepared guitar (Edward III), Tuesday, 5 February 2013 21:09 (twelve years ago)

Crystallized Movements. They don't get enough love (and a good friend of mine was the drummer).

Tarfumes The Escape Goat, Tuesday, 5 February 2013 21:10 (twelve years ago)

a lot of otherworldly & brilliant acts here but Diamanda Galas makes everybody else look like a total square.

:C (crüt), Tuesday, 5 February 2013 21:14 (twelve years ago)

Yeah, a lot of good stuff, but Diamanda was my vote.

emil.y, Tuesday, 5 February 2013 21:18 (twelve years ago)

the poll is your excuse to brag, right?

unprepared guitar (Edward III), Tuesday, 5 February 2013 21:31 (twelve years ago)

THE FROGS!!!!!

i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Tuesday, 5 February 2013 21:34 (twelve years ago)

they were great! it's only right & natural tour iirc

unprepared guitar (Edward III), Tuesday, 5 February 2013 21:53 (twelve years ago)

was Cube at the NWA show? if so, that

Welcome to my world of proses (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 5 February 2013 21:55 (twelve years ago)

yeah it was straight outta compton tour so ice cube was still around

they were great too but I was a little distracted cuz select members of the audience began kicking the shit out of whiteboys shortly after they took the stage

unprepared guitar (Edward III), Tuesday, 5 February 2013 22:17 (twelve years ago)

i caught a few of these that year too: the tad/nirvana tour, sonic youth/mudhoney tour, my bloody valentine, giant sand... all pretty good tbh. might have to vote for the big guy cos he really tore it up. nirvana were fucking great too though

out of the ones i never saw, i always had a soft spot for death of samantha, but i could imagine them being a bit of a drag live

used to keep a list of all the stuff i'd seen back then, wish i hadn't thrown it away. trying to rack my brain as to who else i saw in 1989: spacemen 3, loop, young gods, fugazi, galaxie 500, the chills, bad brains, dinosaur jr, lunachicks, live skull, naked raygun, das damen, the ex, band of susans, the three johns, throwing muses, big dipper, tar babies, ac temple, ut, dub sex, head of david, thee hypnotics, probably forgetting a whole lot...

Jaap and roids (NickB), Tuesday, 5 February 2013 23:02 (twelve years ago)

basically i'm trying to recall all the ugly t-shirts i used to wear

Jaap and roids (NickB), Tuesday, 5 February 2013 23:06 (twelve years ago)

Crystallized Movements. They don't get enough love (and a good friend of mine was the drummer)

eric the 2nd guitarist is a friend of mine now. voting swans though (1989-era swans live shows were so great)

my father will guide me up the stairs to bed (anagram), Tuesday, 5 February 2013 23:06 (twelve years ago)

Not gwar

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 6 February 2013 01:32 (twelve years ago)

death of samantha actually pretty goofy live - drummer was in a bee costume

wish I'd gotten to see head of david, not sure if they ever made it to the states. I liked ac temple even tho they were kind of by the numbers, everybody else I knew kinda hated em.

As a Clevelander I should rep for Death of Samantha but I just can't.

Gollum: "Hot, Ready and Smeagol!" (Phil D.), Wednesday, 6 February 2013 02:41 (twelve years ago)

man I saw gwar so many times back then thru no fault of my own, they were always playing. summer of '89 was with tad in philly. scott seward was at that show too iirc.

unprepared guitar (Edward III), Wednesday, 6 February 2013 03:44 (twelve years ago)

Death of Samantha more recently:

Edward u know we gotta be close to the same age.. that year I also saw Giant Sand, Sonic Youth, Mudhoney, Volcano Suns, and Laughing Hyenas. I passed up a 30 minute drive to see Nirvana open for the Fluid, lol. Based on my personal experience I am voting for the Hyenas, they were just so goddamn unstoppable back then before the smack really kicked in and I can't imagine they were slackers when you saw 'em either.

sleeve, Wednesday, 6 February 2013 04:11 (twelve years ago)

I was 18 and prematurely jaded - thought the hyenas were kind of old hat tho I did love "gabriel" and plenty of right-thinking folks found them to be the shit at the time

the one unsung band on the list I'd rep for is fish & roses, so unloved then and even now I can only find one youtube vid by them, for a song that is not exactly representative of their powers

unprepared guitar (Edward III), Wednesday, 6 February 2013 04:34 (twelve years ago)

best set for me is a grudgematch between rhys chatham and public enemy, the former was one of the most intense sound experiences, the latter one of the intensest performances, at a stadium no less

best band overall would be swans, even disregarding their amazing improbable comeback. I was kind of bummed that I saw them while supporting one of their less interesting albums but they still killed..

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Friday, 22 February 2013 00:01 (twelve years ago)

fuck.

if i had seen UO in 89 i would have so voted for them.

out of no other reason but cos hey had the best hair and suits.

[note : that fact that i never seen UO in concert is one of my all time regrets ... ]

mark e, Friday, 22 February 2013 00:49 (twelve years ago)

The Stone Roses. No, I didn't see them, but it sounds like the correct answer to this thread.

OutdoorFish, Friday, 22 February 2013 00:53 (twelve years ago)

Kinda wish Crystalized Movements got more than 2 votes, but I'm glad they got those 2 votes.

Tarfumes The Escape Goat, Friday, 22 February 2013 00:54 (twelve years ago)

coulda sworn I voted, so take that as a write-in for the Hyenas.

sleeve, Friday, 22 February 2013 01:18 (twelve years ago)

i saw the stone roses in the summer of 90 at a midnight festival in finland.
it was rather special.

mark e, Friday, 22 February 2013 01:22 (twelve years ago)

funny I was just talking with two friends who grew up in the 80s and had vague recollection of who the stone roses were, they really meant fuckall to ppl in the US, and I had to explain they were kind of a big deal in the UK

unprepared guitar (Edward III), Friday, 22 February 2013 18:47 (twelve years ago)

I almost forgot that John Petkovic of Death of Samantha has a weekly thing in the Plain Dealer Friday magazine now. His headshot looks like this:

http://www.cleveland.com/afterdark/images/petkovic_head.jpg

He's also still fronting Cobra Verde, which is a better band anyway. They opened up for GBV when they played in Cleveland last year.

this is called money bags (Phil D.), Friday, 22 February 2013 19:01 (twelve years ago)

They were GBV for a while there, no? Doug Gillard defected semi-permanently before this reunion business started too, iirc.
I remember Death of Samantha, but was too young at the time to have seen them.

Did not vote, but prob would have voted PE? Not sure. Who cares.

and that sounds like a gong-concert (La Lechera), Friday, 22 February 2013 19:17 (twelve years ago)

i think mag earwhig! is basically pollard & cobra verde?

in a chef-driven ambulance (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 22 February 2013 19:18 (twelve years ago)

I always liked Cobra Verde because their name works whether you get the reference or not. That's my kind of name.

and that sounds like a gong-concert (La Lechera), Friday, 22 February 2013 19:31 (twelve years ago)

The Stones Roses were also superior to at least 90% of U.S. groups at the time

OutdoorFish, Friday, 22 February 2013 23:54 (twelve years ago)

pffft

unprepared guitar (Edward III), Friday, 22 February 2013 23:57 (twelve years ago)

i haven't seen any footage but i really have a hard time believing the Stone Roses were a smoking live band even in their prime

luaka boppa flame (some dude), Saturday, 23 February 2013 00:03 (twelve years ago)

tarfunes: if i hadn't voted for the frogs, crystallized movements would have had my vote. though i never saw them live, just heard the rekkerds

i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Saturday, 23 February 2013 00:12 (twelve years ago)

Same goes for at least 90% of U.S. bands at the time

OutdoorFish, Saturday, 23 February 2013 00:18 (twelve years ago)

frankly, about 90% of ALL bands at ANY given moment in time suck.

i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Saturday, 23 February 2013 00:30 (twelve years ago)

all those bands and you missed out on the verve wtf

lance armstrong will have been delighted (darraghmac), Saturday, 23 February 2013 00:34 (twelve years ago)

Exactly especially in the U.S.

OutdoorFish, Saturday, 23 February 2013 00:37 (twelve years ago)

oh man, let's not even get into this US vs UK nonsense, i think we can agree that it's all total bullshit on both sides of the pond.

i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Saturday, 23 February 2013 00:43 (twelve years ago)
