it's a post-modern feminist update of the video for sam kinnison's cover of "wild thing"!!

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 00:36 (twenty-two years ago)

or, um, that NIN video where they're in the cage.

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 00:36 (twenty-two years ago)

or "cold hearted snake".

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 00:36 (twenty-two years ago)

i will now assume all of ilm is without television, real player, and/or a sex drive.

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 00:57 (twenty-two years ago)

That nin vid is "Wish" you trent hatta. As for Christina, it's nice she's showing her skinny butt, but she's still a horrid singer.

maura (maura), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 01:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Not necessarily true. I just have about as much interest in Christina as she does in me. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 01:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Christina is an interesting dichotomy in that she has a fantastic voice that is almost constantly misused. Her video (as I said in the "Christina's leaked single" thread) is RIDICULOUSLY GREBT and has been playing in my head all day. (The dance breaks in it are PHENOMENAL and the overall vibe is grungy, nasty fun. It's also the first video where Christina has successfully pulled off the "tawdry sex appeal" vibe.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 02:01 (twenty-two years ago)

ok seriously how is this video not just 'i'm a slave 4 u' with the coney island factor pumped up a bit? and yes i'm including christina's ass-chaps and the rey mysterio jr lookalike into the coney island factor equation.

maura (maura), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 02:05 (twenty-two years ago)

she's too gamey and minimal by half for me.

tweet needs to make another video soon.

mike (ro)bott, Wednesday, 2 October 2002 04:07 (twenty-two years ago)

It hasn't come out here yet! But, I'm sure I'll see it when it does.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 06:54 (twenty-two years ago)

ok seriously how is this video not just 'i'm a slave 4 u' with the coney island factor pumped up a bit?

That's exactly what this video is and exactly what makes it so fantastic.

that looks pretty damn good and *hooray* the poodle hair has left the building.

michael wells (michael w.), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 14:16 (twenty-two years ago)

haha i read on some site today that they thought i was serious about the "post-modern feminist" thing. if being a pop fan means you "lose all taste", then being an indie fan must mean becoming among the most scarcasm enfeebled schlubs on the planet.

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

omg that is so gonna be my wallpaper. Kneepads!

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

whaddya call those things? chaps? with a bikini! fuck "dirrty", it should be called "fillthy".

michael wells (michael w.), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Jess, if you didn't mean the 'post-modern feminist' remark, what exactly do you mean, ever?

It's a cheesy self-conciously sleazey video. So what? It's dime a dozen these days. Can you tell the difference between trends and legitimate art?

Frank, Wednesday, 2 October 2002 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

lady, if you have to ask, you'll never know.

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 14:47 (twenty-two years ago)

(haha you'd think the reference to sam kinnison in a line about post-modern feminism might be the tip off, but hey, people are a constant disappointment.)

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, I'm kinda surprised that none of you have noted the visual similarities to Lenny Kravitz's "Are You Gonna Go My Way?" video.

...and Foxy Boxing.

Frank, Wednesday, 2 October 2002 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

btw: Jess, if you didn't mean the 'post-modern feminist' remark, what exactly do you mean, ever?, quote of the year.

well said.

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a cheesy self-conciously sleazey video.

I would argue that this is the most comfortable I've ever seen Christina in a video. Which is frightening. And GREBT.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm curious, Jess - would you mind sharing with us all why exactly you think this video is so great, without resorting to hyperbole, lame critic babble, or insults aimed at people who don't share your view? I'd like to know. Seriously.

Frank, Wednesday, 2 October 2002 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

because it's stupid.

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

(is this going to be like the abortion thread on ile, where frank thinks he has "systematically dismantled" my "arguments.")

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

That's a very lame answer, at least in that you leave it at that. Why is it so hard for you to elaborate? Are you just being lazy?

Are you sure you can't do any better than that?

Frank, Wednesday, 2 October 2002 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

(i was right!)

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 15:07 (twenty-two years ago)

frank are you saying you don't see any virtues to stupidity?

Josh (Josh), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 15:09 (twenty-two years ago)

josh, that can't possibly be it. obviously.

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

''I would argue that this is the most comfortable I've ever seen Christina in a video. Which is frightening. And GREBT.''

hey dan you must have really studies those christina videos closely to come to that conclusion.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 15:13 (twenty-two years ago)

''Can you tell the difference between trends and legitimate art?''

ho ho not that's a can of worms that is best left closed OK.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

i meant 'ho ho now...'

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

"Legitimate Art" = "who are you trying to impress?" = "can i get this art school guy/girl to sleep with me?"

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not saying that I don't see the value of 'stupid' art, or sleaze, or cheesiness. What I'm not seeing is the value of Jess' writing, I've never read anything that he's written that hasn't been tossed off and lazy. I've got nothing against his assertion that the Christina Aguilera video is good. I'd just like for him to explain in some kind of articulate way WHY he feels that way.

Jess, don't be so defensive and assume I'm trying to "systematically dismantle" your view. I'd just like to see you be a little less lazy.

Frank, Wednesday, 2 October 2002 15:20 (twenty-two years ago)

welcome to the one-liners club. nothing 'profound to be read here'.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Front page here says it has the video:

http://www.netscape.com/music/

scott pl. (scott pl.), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

say frank, if you're so concerned about opinions on the xtina video, why aren't you also taking dan* to task? or is "RIDICULOUS GREBT" articulate enough for you in a way that i'm somehow falling short of?

(nb: this is not meant to slight dan. i love dan. dan knows this.)

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe you have a point, Jess. But I'm more familiar with your writing, and I'm more sensitive to what it is about you that grates on me so much. Nevermind.

You and Julio have a good point: there is almost no worthwhile, intelligent, in-depth discussion to be found around these parts. I'm reminded of why I never post here, and I'll be leaving again.

Frank, Wednesday, 2 October 2002 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

what can Jess say to change yr mind on this video anyway (he seems to like it for the same reasons you hate it).

we've been around some of these things before. the important is to hang around for a while until you get yr answers. Jess might not have had his coffee yet.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

frank the fact that i have no idea who the hell you are but that i/my "work" (i hope to christ you don't mean ilx posts) "grates" on you just about says it all, really.

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 15:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Says it all?

Are you saying that because you don't know who I am, and that your writing here and elsewhere annoys me, that I'm somehow not worth taking seriously? What does the fact that you don't know me personally have to do with anything?

Frank, Wednesday, 2 October 2002 15:50 (twenty-two years ago)

thanks for the link, scott. now, for some time alone...

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

the most exciting thing about this video is the thought of what britney's gonna have to do to top it.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

anna kournikova to thread.

g.cannon (gcannon), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

(i mean, wouldn't it be best if all this hypersexualized one-upsmanship finally delivered on its promise and cured us all of our collective blue balls by culminating in one great big PSYCHIC GANG BANG? then maybe we could finally stop pretending that the sight of a pop star in a bikini was shocking and admit what we're really (if not latently) doing by busily 'discussing' it)

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

"Are you saying that because you don't know who I am, and that your writing here and elsewhere annoys me, that I'm somehow not worth taking seriously? "

he doesn't have to, cos you just did :-p

rentboy (rentboy), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

i masturbated to the 'slave 4 u' video on the day that it premiered. and the other one, too. the one where she's in red leather and she goes to mars and stuff. that one was definitely harder to work with than 'slave 4 u.' i probably masturbated to the schoolgirl outfit once, too. i can't remember.

it's always at times when you really need to do it and you're just sitting in front of the tv. so you unzip your pants and get all ready and since you're sitting in front of the tv you might as well watch something. so, you check out muchmusic first, then muchmoremusic, then cmt, then bet, then edge, then muchvibe. you've got to see what's good. but, if there was a mariah carey video on muchmusic i'd just go for it right there. but if there was just a pink video i'd keep going. there's even a very good shania twain video, the one where she's got that black suit thing on and the hat and he breasts are all pushed up. muchvibe and bet have good stuff most of the time, too. but it's usually muchmusic, actually.

we'll have to see what happens with this one. i masturbated to the 'lady marmalade' video at least three times but i was mainly focusing on mya, i think.

dk, Wednesday, 2 October 2002 16:35 (twenty-two years ago)

does anyone else want to say it or should i?

This video is the greatest thing to hit the air since "Rock DJ" by Robbie Williams.

Fuck no, having seen those clips now. She looks like she has anoxeria and that ain't silly or sexy. Eurgh.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 20:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay, Ned? She's small, but she isn't that small.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 20:11 (twenty-two years ago)

The lighting is hardly helping matters...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 20:26 (twenty-two years ago)

The mud is, though!</dirty old lech>

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 20:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh dear. Some things are eternally Dan. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 20:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Just saw the vid in question last night and...ummmm....GAWRSH! If she had been intending to make me feel (more like) a lecherous old man (than I already do), kudos to the moppett! However, on closer examination, it just seems like it's a highly choreographed act of one-upsmanship against Brittney's "Slave 4 U" (which looks like an Amy Grant video by comparison). The only images that popped into my head (apart from the lurid ones) were of Christina's mother weeping heartily and her grandparents having blockbusting heart-attacks. Thanksgiving dinner at the Aguillera household will certainly never be the same.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 3 October 2002 13:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and as for the "song" itself? It's so grossly overshadowed by the accompanying visuals that I probably wouldn't be able to pick it out if you played it for me. Absolutely devoid of distinction and/or merit....to me, anyway. Did those Neptune Nerd fellas produce this too?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 3 October 2002 13:40 (twenty-two years ago)

The only images that popped into my head (apart from the lurid ones) were of Christina's mother weeping heartily and her grandparents having blockbusting heart-attacks. Thanksgiving dinner at the Aguillera household will certainly never be the same.

I hate to sound like a broken record, but this is yet another reason why I love this video so much.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 3 October 2002 13:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I bet her mother manages her career (or has some part in this) and that her grandparents will 'understand'.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 3 October 2002 14:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Her mother did help manage her career at one point, but I think she was envisioning "successful balladeer" for her daughter rather than "skanky pit-fighting melismaniac".

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 3 October 2002 14:28 (twenty-two years ago)

well in that case watch for the 'I'm disgusted at her'-type ''story''.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 3 October 2002 14:32 (twenty-two years ago)

(I am inordinately pleased with my self for the phrase "skanky pit-fighting melismaniac". I will probably be more insufferable than usual for a little while until the glow wears off.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 3 October 2002 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

(no one will really be able to tell the difference.)

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 3 October 2002 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 3 October 2002 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 3 October 2002 14:49 (twenty-two years ago)

(now sobs in turn)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 3 October 2002 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

don't FITE. it's only pop music after all...

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 3 October 2002 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

"it's only pop music after all... "

Really? Looks more like soft-core porn to me (.......and I'm all for it!)

Alex soon-to-be-in-Hell (vassifer), Thursday, 3 October 2002 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh my god, that is utterly fantastic, the boxing bit especially. Goes down a little after Redman's verse, but saved by plushies.

The song is brilliant too. I wasn't sure until Scott Mills told me so, but I am now.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 3 October 2002 20:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay maybe I am dense but it just hit me what the song actually is about. "It's about time for my arrival" -- i.e. she's about to come. She's begging her partner to "hit the spot" to send her over.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Friday, 4 October 2002 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe the vid would be better if she wasn't UGLY AS SIN.
