In the absence of a home page I thought we might as well do it here. List the mix-cds you can make for people here.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 09:08 (twenty-two years ago) link

oh and maximum number of copies I'd make is 4.

Is that important for this project? Coz like I would have to think of postage cost and all that.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 09:10 (twenty-two years ago) link

The idea is that everyone who had copies of the mix in question would be listed, and those people could make more at their discretion, so you wouldnt have to make every copy.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 09:19 (twenty-two years ago) link

cool! (not that I think my mix would be that popular! heh!)

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 09:22 (twenty-two years ago) link

anyone doing/done anything similar with tapes?

I note an apparently little used bit of the site called tapeexchange: is that what this was?

jon (jon), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 09:32 (twenty-two years ago) link

Slightly different I think. Tapes would be OK though tapes deteriorate on copying whereas CDs (correct me if I'm wrong) don't or do less.

Ambitiously, what I'd like this to be is limited to 'themed' mixes (as in by genre or style or location or whatever invisible connection you want to work out - not really by 'subject' though) so we build up an alternative aural music history according to ILM. So that in a year's time if some new reader thinks wow, I'm interested in hearing more UK Garage/kwaito/buttrock, they can go to the mixes homepage and find a list of people they can ask about getting a CD from.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 09:39 (twenty-two years ago) link

fantastic (-ally illegal).

there must be many of us with just these kinds of themes on tape and without cd burners.

It's true they don't recopy so well, or indeed copy with such ease - so the original 'owner' would be more greatly burdened - but I for one would be happy to swap mine around in just such a fashion, within reason. Especially if I'm getting free cd mixes from people - at least I'd feel I was 'putting back in'.

What do you think, Tom? Worth another thread? Or am I reinventing the wheel?

jon (jon), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 09:54 (twenty-two years ago) link

I can come up with forms stuff pretty easily if you flesh out the idea a bit more.

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 10:54 (twenty-two years ago) link

Can offer various this and thats. Will think about this duly, but it's too early for tracklistings.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 12:04 (twenty-two years ago) link

Why not simply give choices in the form - whether you are offering, say mp3, a cd, or a C90 - then people can decide for themselves.

Arthur, these CDs sound FANTASTIC! See, that's the kind of mix-CDs I always thirst for: one that function as some kind of friendly reminder that rock history is deeper and thicker than I could ever possibly imagine.

So, is this home page going to appear, eventually? This is too good an idea to just let it drop. Wish I knew how to do that sort of thing.

coil - "futher back and faster"

jess, wow I actually like one of these (not that I know them all). I think there's probably some more Coil out there I wouldn't mind owning. What's this "lost generation" stuff? I'm not familiar with how that term would apply to these artists.

Rockist Scientist, Saturday, 5 October 2002 02:49 (twenty-two years ago) link

The Lost Generation

basically a sub-set of ilx's rubric for a period/sound between 1991-1996 (although it still exists today to one degree or another: hood, piano magic...even bands like lail puna and dntel owe something to it), most notably the ones simon reynolds focused on in the original "post-rock" article: basically bands who took inspiration from a few major sources (factory records, hiphop/dance, dream pop, dub, noise) outside of the then grunge norm, all of whom had the impace of a damp squib (but should have been huge, etc. etc.) the disco inferno story is one of the saddest i know in pop. anyway, i slotted coil mostly because i think a. they fit and b. they're often overlooked in the history of idm/post-rock/whatever. (and i like the track.)

Haha...I got this track more than a year ago, loved it but it was mislabeled Mekon - Please Stay (Remix). It was only when the big Royksopp hype started this summer that I realized that it was theirs. It's too bad Royksopp doesn't do more uptempo tracks like this, I wasn't totally impressed by Melody A.M..

Oh, so in throwing a Nick Drake song for "balance" at the end of a really fun mix CD with a lot of tunes meant to be heard while driving in a car with the windows down in sunny weather -- bad idea -- that sucker never ceases to get skipped. He's that solemn dude who's killing every conversation at the party.

not the only thing he's killing!

six months pass...

is this a good jazz mix CD for a dad? I tried to keep it pretty whitebread so no Peter Brötzmann or Cecil Taylor or whatever.

1. Miles Davis - Jeru
2. Art Blakey - Moanin'
3. Kenny Dorham - Lotus Blossom
4. Horace Silver - Song For My Father
5. The Dave Brubeck Quartet - Blue Rondo A La Turk
7. Cannonball Adderley - Autumn Leaves
8. Ornette Coleman - Peace
9. Charles Mingus - Adagio Ma Non Troppo
10. Alice Coltrane - Journey In Satchidananda

a few years ago I bought him a collection of Louis Armstrong's Hot Five and Hot Seven sessions, but I think he was slightly disappointed with it because it didn't include 'What a Wonderful World'.

he's 60, xpost. he was big into stuff like Sabbath and Zeppelin and the Moody Blues in the '70s, but by the '90s he had mellowed out to the point where he'd mostly just listen to Jewel and Dido albums on repeat. lately he's been asking for old favorites for birthday/Xmas gifts (James Taylor, America, Louis Armstrong, 'music from the '30s'), so I feel like the jazz thing will go over well even though he was never that big into jazz afaik.

my dad turns 70 next year and he likes Cannonball Adderley and Brubeck, so that looks like a good mix for someone 10 yrs younger

sarahell, Sunday, 21 June 2015 18:57 (nine years ago) link

I hope so! I wish I were more knowledgeable about swing and vocal jazz, because that kind of stuff would probably resonate with him more. like a lot of boomerdads, he's gotten nostalgic for the kind of music his parents listened to when he was a kid, and while they probably weren't fans of Miles and Ornette (Brubeck - maybe) I tried to choose tracks that wouldn't freak out square white '50s suburbanites.
