Best UK DJ Steve Sutherland - this is NOT the NME director !

Why do MoBo awards ignore drumnbass/ jungle?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 08:14 (twenty-two years ago)

[insert tasteless Lisa Left-Eye outstanding achievement joke here]

Jeff W (Jeff W), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 08:37 (twenty-two years ago)

The great thing about the Mobos is that they make the Brit Awards look cutting edge.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 08:44 (twenty-two years ago)

The list of nominees this year made for pretty inspiring reading in some places but that's not really been translated in the awards itself.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 08:53 (twenty-two years ago)

The nominations.

stevo (stevo), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 09:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Norah fuckin' Jones.

The winners list still seems more interesting than the Brits nominations, never mind the Britswinners. Jimmy Cliff winning 'contribution to urban music' seems a bit odd, tho'.

Andrew L (Andrew L), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 09:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe it's just me, but I always feel slightly uncomfortable about the whole concept of a "Music Of Black Origins" award....

Is there some section of popular music that I've missed and which *DOESN'T* have black origins somewhere along the line, or is someone being overtly racist and excluding people from winning this award based on the colour of their skin?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 11:08 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe they should change the name to Music Of Black Orientation although thats only marginally more appropriate

the MOBOs didnt ignore drum n bass in the past - , they've given gongs to Goldie, Adam F and Grooverider before I believe...but coming up with a shortlist of nominees for such an award these days would be quite tricky you have to admit...

Mis-Teeq winning the Garage award is pretty fuckin laughable tho...oh well

blueski, Wednesday, 2 October 2002 11:29 (twenty-two years ago)

also please note Stewart that Adam F, Jay K of Jamiroquai and Norah Jones (all MOBO winners) are not black...racism hasnt existed at awards ceremonies for years has it??

blueski, Wednesday, 2 October 2002 11:58 (twenty-two years ago)

i get more annoyed at seeing a Lifetime Achievement AND an Outstanding Contribution award - practically the same thing isnt it?

blueski, Wednesday, 2 October 2002 12:00 (twenty-two years ago)

The definitional thing is a fudge - a better question for Stewart would be: what music do you think *is* being exluded? i.e. arguing from actual not theoretical injustices.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 13:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Tom asked: "what music do you think *is* being exluded?"

I have no idea (if I did then my reaction would be one of hostility rather than mere discomfort) but if neither any form of music nor any actual musicians are being excluded, then precisely what purpose is the word "Black" serving here?

Would you feel comfortable with the concept of a "Music Of WHITE Origins" award?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

i used to feel a bit like that Stewart but i'm just not as bothered anymore for whatever reason - its generally accepted that Music Of Black Origin covers virtually everything - only that would render the MOBOs a waste of time, so their impetus appears to be more about raising and maintaning the profile of black artists and their music whilst not wishing to seem anti-white regarding the awards thus including anyone of any race in there if they're proving successful and popular enough to warrant nomination e.g. Norah Jones

Music Of Black Dominance appears to be the real criterium...hence the complete lack of support for rock or indeed much of the charty pop out there despite the current influence of hip hop and r n b in so many songs in the charts

blueski, Wednesday, 2 October 2002 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the idea of "Music of Black Origin" awards is that they concern those musics which primarily emerge from within a black (or multi-racial) community. So rock for instance isn't included because while it was partially derived from 'black' music it isn't being much made by black people now.

I agree that setting racial boundaries around music like this is a bad idea. But the fact is that for some reason the existing network of awards weren't prioritising or recognising hip-hop, dance, soul, reggae or jazz and the obvious innovation and quality in those musics needed rewarding*. The 'Black Origin' thing provided a convenient if flawed umbrella under which to get the thing started. In practise non-black artists are nominated every year and several (Eminen, Westwood, Fatboy Slim for example) have won things.

*if you assume that any awards of any kind are neccessary, that is - which I'm not sure I do.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

good ponts well made. tho i'd say awards ceremonies are MADE necessary because i'm sure they are actually extremely beneficial for record companies and their artists - astoundingly good opportunities for publicity for example, giving gossip/showbiz writers some work to do etc. - and lets not forget its the chance to recognise who's actually doin good work out there in music-land (well thats the idea anyway) - awards are a useful tool to support an industry of any kind for these reasons

having said all this i really loathe the ghastly nature of the MTV European Awards, the Grammies and the Brit Awards and its a shame these things cant be done in a better way somehow...

HONOR THE WORDICAL FIRE!

Capleton Racetrack Five Miles Long Doo Dah (Arthur), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 21:05 (twenty-two years ago)

So who were the queer-burning nominees then? Dancehall ragga types, presumably? Didn't Radio 1 get into shit recently for playing homophobic tracks?

Charlie (Charlie), Thursday, 3 October 2002 01:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Capleton, TKO and Elephant Man. Never heard them.

This is from the article: "Capleton insists the fires he sings about throwing gay men into are metaphorical allusions to cleansing and purity. "Is not really a physical fire. Is really a spiritual fire, and a wordical fire, and a musical fire," he said. "But people get it on the wrong term. People get confused ... We come to burn for injustice and inequality and kill indignity and exploitation."

Oh, I see! Well, when you put it that way, Capleton...

Arthur (Arthur), Thursday, 3 October 2002 01:24 (twenty-two years ago)

fuck that shit - what a dick.

Charlie (Charlie), Thursday, 3 October 2002 01:26 (twenty-two years ago)

and yes, that's my well thought-out and reasonable response...so sue me.

Charlie (Charlie), Thursday, 3 October 2002 01:26 (twenty-two years ago)
