If 'Is This It' sounded like any of those then I wouldn't feel so morbidly depressed every time I see the Strokes on the cover of something. I think "Last Nite" is the litmus test. See I hate that "Town Called Malice" beat. English people and Anglophiles seem to love the shit out of it, but to me it just sounds like the Housemartins or Lightning Seeds. "Lust for Life" had that rhythm but shifted over to the floor tom in that full-spec-dom US style. Maybe I dislike the 'Last Nite' beat so much because of Britophobia which according to obnoxious identity politicians of course means my latent Euroweenieness

**See I hate that "Town Called Malice" beat**

Which is basically an uptempto Motown beat (cf 'You Can't Hurry Love').

Wire's "Ahead" is such a comedy rip-off of New Order's "Temptation", especially the intro, so much so that it actually legally excuses Elastica all their Wire-riff-robbing crimes. It's also great for the comedy 'r' in the singer's voice all the way through, bless.

I'm confused about the 'Town Called Malice' beat reference. It sounds nowt like it ! Or was Dave "Brit Boy" Q just referring to the Strokes.
