2008? 2009?
I'm thinking that the Hottest Nigga Under the Sun was his last hurrah
― Raymond Cummings, Monday, 25 February 2013 14:17 (twelve years ago)
man it seems like this
the historical implications of lil wayne's current popularity
happened just yesterday
― 乒乓, Monday, 25 February 2013 15:04 (twelve years ago)
Whoops sorry folks
― Raymond Cummings, Monday, 25 February 2013 15:50 (twelve years ago)
that's not a thread about when lil wayne fell off btw
― flopson, Monday, 25 February 2013 15:55 (twelve years ago)
lil wayne is annoying would be slightly closer, but it's about how lil wayne's new material retroactively cheapens his classic earlier stuff
― flopson, Monday, 25 February 2013 15:57 (twelve years ago)
yeah wayne's exhausted at this point. but even so, his spot on gucci's "bullet wound" shows he has some life left in him yet
― bish (bosch), don't kill my vibe (rennavate), Monday, 25 February 2013 17:13 (twelve years ago)
when he began calling himself tunechi
― nose, Monday, 25 February 2013 17:31 (twelve years ago)
yeah I didn't mean to say that this thread is duplicative, just felt like a year ago lil wayne was the biggest thing in rap and now he's trash
― 乒乓, Monday, 25 February 2013 17:34 (twelve years ago)
i feel like there's been a long, steady decline for the last 5 years, the same way there was a long steady improvement over 5+ years earlier in his career. but i'd put the steepest moment of decline at, like, early 2008 or late 2007, midway through the recording of Carter 3. you can tell that album could've been amazing if he'd just wrapped it up a few months earlier.
― luaka boppa flame (some dude), Monday, 25 February 2013 19:01 (twelve years ago)
yup otm
― k3vin k., Monday, 25 February 2013 19:20 (twelve years ago)
tha carter III is classic
― you are my capitalism (spazzmatazz), Monday, 25 February 2013 19:37 (twelve years ago)
I place the black Tuesday crash a bit later than that, in the short window between No Ceilings and Rebirth.
Not a totally clean line, since Dedication 3 portended bad things, and Wayne still had a few good pop turns in him before prison, but that seems like the biggest, most sudden decline to me
― Evan R, Monday, 25 February 2013 19:41 (twelve years ago)
how one feels about tha carter 3 is a pretty good litmus test for how i value their rap opinions
― k3vin k., Tuesday, 26 February 2013 03:07 (twelve years ago)
It's one of the more sensational collapses I've seen. Through 2006 and 2007 in my circles he was GREATEST RAPPER ALIVE
― the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 26 February 2013 03:11 (twelve years ago)
Some Dude 100% otm. Carter 3 has quite a few stellar jams, though.
― Harlem vs Alabama (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Tuesday, 26 February 2013 07:15 (twelve years ago)
Yeah, some dude otm, it's not something that happened all at once. I feel like No Ceilings was his last decent release tho, if we have to draw a line somewhere.
― The Reverend, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 08:16 (twelve years ago)
i remember j0rdan wrote something about his lyrics on 'no ceilings' being corny and at the time i'm not sure i was ready to concede he'd fallen off but retrospectively it's def. true.
― tpp, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 08:27 (twelve years ago)
i have no idea why so many people defend No Ceilings, it's totally unremarkable compared to, like, every freestyle tape he did before that.
― luaka boppa flame (some dude), Tuesday, 26 February 2013 10:03 (twelve years ago)
that said, he did have an ok 2009 for guest verses/collabs compared to his 2008 output besides Carter 3
― luaka boppa flame (some dude), Tuesday, 26 February 2013 10:04 (twelve years ago)
Is there such a thing as a "rap intervention" where a rapper's peers and weed carriers, like, trap a rapper in a hotel room outside Atlanta and just patiently am lovingly walk the rapper through empirical evidence demonstrating a decline? Pusha T needs one of these too
― Raymond Cummings, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 11:29 (twelve years ago)
And yeah, No Ceilings was dire. A lot of people were in denial, I think.
Rebirth sucked eggs, IV was worse. I don't remember ANYTHING about the Young Money album except that "Every Girl" was the last Wayne-involved single I could ride for

In retrospect Carter III, if you're being generous, is about half plateau and half beginning-of-the-end but looking back at the tracklisting there's a hell of a lot I'd skip if I were ever to play it again. It does feel like an album that slightly awkwardly straddles two different eras though.
― Matt DC, Wednesday, 27 February 2013 13:33 (twelve years ago)
what al said
― sisilafami, Wednesday, 27 February 2013 14:47 (twelve years ago)
lil wayne is still really fucking popular btw... if he doesn't die prematurely there's a chance he goes down as one of the three or four most popular/successful rappers ever
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 27 February 2013 15:37 (twelve years ago)
wouldn't dying be better for his popularity ?
― sisilafami, Wednesday, 27 February 2013 15:39 (twelve years ago)

If someone wraps intuitively and un-selfconsciously on syrup, then at some point can't stay on the syrup, then he may have a hard time getting back in that zone. (See also: many others.)
― your fretless ways (Eazy), Wednesday, 27 February 2013 15:39 (twelve years ago)
but yeah i agree with al. carter III is still a good album with, like, 5 unimpeachable songs, but it was very clear that he had taken a step down from his sqad/carter/carter II/mixtape run.
the thing i wrote about 'no ceilings' looks better as every day passes and either that or dedication 3 was when i was like "yeah, there's no turning back"

maybe, but probably not... he's already put out so much material. it would be a different thing than big & pac
I mean, here's how he was living in his creative prime.
― your fretless ways (Eazy), Wednesday, 27 February 2013 15:43 (twelve years ago)
I still think No Ceilings is pretty good, and after that it's a precipitous fall in quality.
― bish (bosch), don't kill my vibe (rennavate), Wednesday, 27 February 2013 17:19 (twelve years ago)
Whoa at that GQ story
― Raymond Cummings, Wednesday, 27 February 2013 20:32 (twelve years ago)
Reports of seizure on his plane?
― (•̪●) (carne asada), Monday, 13 June 2016 22:07 (eight years ago)
:'-(
― de l'asshole (flopson), Monday, 13 June 2016 22:09 (eight years ago)
Hoping he's OK. Interestingly he's the second rapper (behind 2011 Rick Ross) who has suffered a seizure on a plane, landed, gotten treatment, then re-boarded and immediately suffered another in-air seizure and required a second same-day emergency landing. No idea how that's allowed to happen.
― Evan R, Monday, 13 June 2016 22:27 (eight years ago)
Lmao
― de l'asshole (flopson), Monday, 13 June 2016 23:33 (eight years ago)
Everyone in Omaha was really excited about his plane landing here fwiw

― Dierks Bentley's Holistic Detective Agency (some dude), Tuesday, 14 June 2016 13:18 (eight years ago)
Seriously, you made me think he fell off the plane.
― how's life, Tuesday, 14 June 2016 13:30 (eight years ago)

― johnny crunch, Tuesday, 14 June 2016 13:31 (eight years ago)
