Iranian Metal

Metal in Iran, right? Seems totally improbable but there's a pretty large scene. All choices culled from Encyclopaedia Metallum; I've only heard like 10 of them. Which others should I check out? And is metal in Tehran as subversive as I imagine? Tons of links here: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/mark-levine/blog-posts-from-irans-met_b_217517.html -- Also:

Chapter about Metal in Iran: http://meaning.org/heavymetalislamiran.pdf

The basij, and the interests they serve, have made it nearly impossible to find a good place to play or hear heavy metal in Tehran. For the most part, nontraditional music, and rock in particular, is heard not just indoors, but quite literally under- ground, in basements, the storage rooms of apartment build- ings, and parking garages. Performances are occasionally allowed, but only under tightly controlled conditions, and even then they can be canceled with little notice, sometimes in mid-performance. Few countries in the world have re- pressed non-official public culture, and particularly music, as thoroughly as has Iran.

Despite the crackdowns, as recently as 2007, 3,000 fans could be expected to show up for shows such as the one per- formed by the band SDS at the University of Tehran, even though it wasn’t allowed to perform with vocals. “We were not allowed to headbang or even stand up,” one fan present ex- plained to me. “It was ‘metal theater,’ not a metal concert,” continued Pooya, one of the founders of the scene who did the first, and to this day one of the only, public metal concerts with vocals. “Everyone had to sit politely. At one gig, at Elm-o- San’at (Science and Industry) University, we managed to play for forty minutes before the basij tried to force us to stop. They weren’t supposed to enter the university. So they drove up to the front and started roaring their motorcycles, and the man- ager of the place begged us to stop. We were the last metal concert with vocals.”

Even without vocals, explained another musician, when bands played classic death-metal anthems, like the songs from Slayer’s classic 1986 album Reign in Blood, “the whole crowd would fucking explode with headbanging, nobody could control them. They’d go so wild, you know? Needless to say, the next gig was canceled, because the whole thing was about control, and we were out of their control. We were ar- rested and charged with satanism.”

1000 Funerals, Cold Cry, Frequency of Butterfly Wings, Necromimesis, and Sounds of Pain are all supposedly doom however I cannot vouch for any of them.

Farzad Golpayegani is closest so far to what I was hoping for when I started looking for Iranian metal - strong folk Iranian + slight maqam influences aka Iranian folk metal! (and some shredding) -- what I really want to find is some Iranian metal is female vox....

Mordy, Saturday, 2 March 2013 16:02 (twelve years ago)

i'm wracking my brain trying to remember how to say "metal" in farsi. the closest i can get is "iron".

the late great, Saturday, 2 March 2013 16:29 (twelve years ago)

in the end 5grs were a little too amateur and not original enough for my tastes.

all the farzad golpayegani albums (numbers one thru six) are great tho, prog folk metal. this track i love:
