Hey, no thread on these guys yet. I think they're great, but then, I've worn out all my Volcano Suns records. Their self-released EP already going for stupid money (which sucks, because I neglected to nab a copy when I could) but the debut is due on Fat Possum in April. Pretty media-untrained, too, which is refreshing (see Pitchfork interview, in which they're sorta ((unfairly and wrongly)) critical of Sonic Youth, SST and Sub Pop). What says ILM?

love the beyond living EP a lot

yeah the EP rules, and Jimmywine, I bought it direct from Perennial Death just a couple months ago. emailed 'em and the guy wrote back, told me how much ($15, I think, maybe even $10) and said "hurry, i'm about out of them" ... worth a try, maybe.

alpine static, Thursday, 28 February 2013 00:39 (twelve years ago)

Thanks, alpine! Will give that a try right now...

Jimmywine Dyspeptic, Thursday, 28 February 2013 01:09 (twelve years ago)

Beyond Living is great. I didn't love the one song I heard from the new record quite so much. Seemed a little less ferocious.

Oblique Strategies, Thursday, 28 February 2013 03:18 (twelve years ago)

one month passes...

new record is considerable less ferocious, but gorgeous and every bit as personal/homemade-sounding, maybe moreso. still sounds like something that would & should have come out somewhere between 85 and 87, but maybe on homestead or restless instead of SST this time around. fucking loving it. fuzzy, stoned, awkward, youthfully desperate and almost heartbreaking. melodies occasionally reminiscent of verlaine or eno (esp on "the final scene").

contenderizer, Saturday, 6 April 2013 13:19 (twelve years ago)

love this band. just bought this, waiting for it to arrive

Jimmywine Dyspeptic, Sunday, 7 April 2013 03:38 (twelve years ago)

listened to it a bunch today while driving around. also hearing greg sage in the guitar tone, eric's trip in the fuzz & angst. vocals are mixed a bit high for my taste, but it's a minor quibble. great record.

contenderizer, Sunday, 7 April 2013 18:55 (twelve years ago)

Huh. After a few listens, I don't like it nearly as much as the EP. Must give it more time.

alpine static, Sunday, 7 April 2013 23:59 (twelve years ago)

I listened to this in the car this afternoon, too. Really digging it so far. Love the guitar tones (def hear some Wipers there) and the negative lyrical slant. The wailing vocals kinda remind me of Dead Moon and a band called Crackerbash from the 90's.

Cannonley Adderall (InternationalWaters), Monday, 8 April 2013 00:43 (twelve years ago)

like them. they sound like The Men which sounds like Dino jr, Replacements etc.. and they have a great singer.
u hope they will develop and not get ruined like the men of The Men.

nostormo, Monday, 8 April 2013 09:09 (twelve years ago)

also. they should do a side project called Meat Music, that will play twee style.

nostormo, Monday, 8 April 2013 09:10 (twelve years ago)

pretty cool that it made me put on living all over you

illegalblues, Monday, 8 April 2013 18:14 (twelve years ago)

now they will sign to Matador, and all the fans will backlash against their next record, no matter how how he would sound like

nostormo, Monday, 8 April 2013 18:57 (twelve years ago)

i think most of their fans know their influence. any said backlash would be pretty dumb.

illegalblues, Monday, 8 April 2013 19:53 (twelve years ago)

down only with the most brilliant backlash

two months pass...

I saw Milk Music open for Merchandise in Brooklyn last week. worst live band I have seen in a long-ass time. just insanely boring. the fact that these guys get mentioned in the same breath as Dino Jr. and Husker Du is nuts.

dmr, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 16:03 (eleven years ago)

I usually wouldn't search out a thread to revive just to take potshots but they have a fair amount of hype (enough that I wanted to make sure I got to the show early enough to see them) and they were baaaaad.

dmr, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 16:06 (eleven years ago)

Bummer. I like the record. The live on WFMU recording I have as well doesn't seem to suggest what you're saying either. A stage presence thing?

Evan, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 16:36 (eleven years ago)

I thought they were decent sounding but had absolutely zero stage presence. Merchandise blew them off the stage though, both in sound and swagger. Milk Music definitely didn't benefit from the comparisons.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 16:43 (eleven years ago)

A stage presence thing?

Yeah, what EZ Snappin said. Also some of the songs they played just seemed to trudge along undifferentiated for ten minutes. You can kind of hear the seed of what they think is a Neil Young or Built to Spill epic or something but it didn't have nearly enough guitar pyrotechnics or personality to keep my interest.

dmr, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 17:38 (eleven years ago)

And I've listened to their new album once or twice and didn't really remember it having a buncha long jams

dmr, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 17:39 (eleven years ago)

sad, but maybe they're just getting their legs. like the record enough not to care, tbh.

Me and my pool noodle (contenderizer), Wednesday, 26 June 2013 18:31 (eleven years ago)

Yeah they should be two separate points. Not everyone is fit to "perform".

Evan, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 19:44 (eleven years ago)

nine years pass...

They've changed their name to Mystic 100's, which (somewhat confusingly) was the title of their previous Milk Music album. New one is nicely fried, with some very long jams, vocals now reminding me of Verlaine more than anyone. Nice piece on it last week by Toth (Wooden Wand) over at Aquarium Drunkard.

I like far out music better than I like alternative rock/pop/grunge but I like the early Dinosaur Jr/SST sounding days of Milk Music better than the forced acid trip vibes of where they’re at now.

zacata, Monday, 1 May 2023 23:41 (two years ago)

I never heard Milk Music before, tbh, but I am loving the hell out of the Mytic 100s record, right up my alley.

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 2 May 2023 13:51 (two years ago)

Not heard the new one, but the revive made me put on «Cruise Your Illusion» for the first time in about seven years

eight months pass...

am just discovering the new one. kind of gives me a wet tuna vibe. i've never heard the previous stuff. is it all super fried weird psych jams?

budo jeru, Thursday, 25 January 2024 00:25 (one year ago)

Their earliest stuff is catchy Big Muff scuzz rock, Dinosaur/Mudhoney style and it rules.

Reeves Gabrels' Funko Pop (majorairbro), Thursday, 25 January 2024 01:07 (one year ago)

gotcha
