i really wanted to vote for something other than "Hotel California" but can't.

Bee OK, Thursday, 28 February 2013 03:07 (twelve years ago)

oh here is part one for those who missed it: the biggest seling album of all time is now officially 'the eagles- their greatest hits' why?

Bee OK, Thursday, 28 February 2013 03:12 (twelve years ago)

lol, wrong thread, here is the thread i meant to post: The best-selling album of all time in the United States: The Eagles - Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975) poll

Bee OK, Thursday, 28 February 2013 03:12 (twelve years ago)

In The Book Of Rock Lists (1981), the end section is basically the authors' (Dave Marsh and Kevin Stein) ranking of each year's top 40 singles. "Life In The Fast Lane" makes the 1977 list, but with an asterisk: "penalized 10 spots for rancid ideology."

Tarfumes The Escape Goat, Thursday, 28 February 2013 03:14 (twelve years ago)

"Seven Bridges Road" is awesome

steeny HOOSer (some dude), Thursday, 28 February 2013 03:15 (twelve years ago)

"The Long Run" cuz I love the harmonies and because it reminds me of Elton's "Sad Songs Say So Much." If Timothy B. Schmitt didn't sing so high I might like "I Can't Tell You Why."

i love the whole dynamic of the new guy joining a band full of established hitmakers, for what turned out to be the last album of their original run, totally knocked it out of the park with a huge song that sounded nothing like the band's other songs.

steeny HOOSer (some dude), Thursday, 28 February 2013 03:27 (twelve years ago)

haha apparently The Long Run was the last #1 album of the 1970s, narrowly edging out In Through The Out Door

steeny HOOSer (some dude), Thursday, 28 February 2013 03:28 (twelve years ago)

if ever there was a guy whose brother was a Shetland pony it's Schmitt.

(xpost) If that was the last 1-2 of the decade, that's as perfect as it gets. (A symbolic rather than aesthetic judgement.) The decade came in with either Led Zeppelin II (12/27/69 issue) or Abbey Road (1/3/70 issue), depending upon how you look at it.

clemenza, Thursday, 28 February 2013 03:45 (twelve years ago)

fortunately the Eagles reunited so that Schmitt could sing:

Like I sad in the other thread, "New Kid In Town," mostly for the guitars and that silly key change. "The Long Run" a close second.

Really detested "Heartache Tonight" when it came out. Now I'm not so sure why since it doesn't sound all that different from other parts of their catalog. Probably just sick of them being all over the radio. I'd go greatest hits '71-'75 >> vol 2.

that's not my post, Thursday, 28 February 2013 04:45 (twelve years ago)

Just watched the creatively-titled 3 hour documentary "History Of The Eagles" currently playing on Showtime. They come off exactly as you'd imagine they would, kinda smug, very rich. Don Henley comes off as much more of a tortured artist than Glenn Frey.

The best part of the doc by far is some captured audio of a fight onstage between Felder and Frey the night Felder left/quit got fired. They didn't like each other very much.

I don't really care for their music, although I have a soft spot for Building The Perfect Beast.

I'd take The Boys Of Summer over everything the Eagles ever recorded, but out of these, it's Hotel California.

kornrulez6969, Thursday, 28 February 2013 05:18 (twelve years ago)

And that's what I have to say about that.

kornrulez6969, Thursday, 28 February 2013 05:29 (twelve years ago)

"New Kid In Town," mostly for the guitars and that silly key change.

That key change is my favorite thing by them!

We should poll Glenn Frey's greatest hits:

1. The Heat Is On
2. Smuggler's Blues
3. You Belong To The City
4. Sexy Girl
5. Love In The 21st Century
6. True Love
7. The Allnighter
8. The One You Love (Live)
9. Strange Weather
10. I've Got Mine
11. Soul Searchin'
12. Part Of Me, Part Of You

The best part of the doc by far is some captured audio of a fight onstage between Felder and Frey the night Felder left/quit got fired. They didn't like each other very much.

"Only three more songs until I kick your ass, pal," Frey recalls Felder telling him near the end of the band's set.[26]

Most entertaining Eagles show ever.

Voted "Life in the Fast Line," but would have voted "In the City" if it was on here.

I can't find much to like about this band even if one of their songs was pinched by Douglas Adams to serve as the theme song to the original BBC Radio series version of 'Hitchhiker's Guide' and therefore affectionately burned into my memory, but:

http://www.discogs.com/XperXr-Because-Im-Worth-It/release/3031448

^^ absolutely incredible concept pop album of techno / disco / R&B loops where every other track concludes with the guitar solo from 'Hotel California' performed in its entirety, regardless of the loop's key. I can't think of a single person posting to this thread who doesn't need to hear this album all the way through.

Joe Walsh used to drop by a Chicago radio show every so often in the 80s (Steve & Garry, for anyone who remembers). He told a story about recording "Hotel California," and how he and Felder were sitting in the control room listening to the playback of the guitar solo, pretty happy with what they'd done. Henley walks in, barks, "What is this shit?! This is awful! Do the solo again!" and storms off. Joe and Don smirk at each other, and do no re-recording whatsoever. Henley comes back, higher than shit, hears the playback again -- of the same solo -- and says, "Now this is more like it! Thanks for re-doing it, guys!"

Tarfumes The Escape Goat, Thursday, 28 February 2013 21:03 (twelve years ago)

I couldn't vote in the other poll because all the songs were dull but I can at least kinda dig "Hotel California" and "The Long Run." dunno which one I'm gonna vote for just yet.

The reality says otherwise, of course, but Henley's humorless mien and drill sergeant attitude strike me as too straight; it's hard – for me – to imagine he doing coke.

In Southern California in the late 70s it was more plentiful than water. Single-celled organisms were doing coke.

The documentary is Sooooooooo long 3+ hours, but I watched it all. Glenn is such a dick, seems way worse than Don.

Timothy B Schmidt seems like the nicest guy ever.

Weird fact: Frey is from Detroit and super tight bros with Seger way back in the pre Bullet era! Frey sings and plays on Ramblin Gamblin Man!

Can't stand Seven Bridges Road. Bad enough this cassette was in every tape deck in the bowling alley parking lot, but just hearing THERE ARE STARS and the drunken sing-a-long that would possibly follow permenantly soured me on that cut.

Haven't seen this Eagles doc yet. Was told that they go into detail about how Meisner brought in Victim of Love, only to have the lead vocals and songwriting credit taken from him. These dudes were cold. Make you wanna go take a big shit inside Walden's Pond.

Schmitt thing is weird. Speaking of Meisner, funny how both bassists had one fucking huge song... And that was about it.

Might have to go with Hotel California. I'm honest enough to say if that final three minutes comes on the radio, I won't turn it off.

Shakedown was Bob Seger's only US No. 1 hit. That's weird too.
