April 20 exclusive limited to 1,000 copies

The Jesus and Mary Chain's essential 1985 debut, Psychocandy, will be reissued in a "paint splatter" vinyl edition for this year's Record Store Day (April 20), according to the band's Facebook page. Limited to just 1,000 copies, this pressing will come packaged with a reproduction of an early JAMC gig poster. As of now, it's unclear if this new version of the fuzzed out masterpiece will be a U.K.-exclusive.

Other treasures planned for Record Store Day include Stephen Malkmus' full-length cover of Can's 1972 album Ege Bamyasi, a reprinting of Hüsker Dü's first single, and a new Sub Pop compilation, among others. As previously reported, Record Store Day 2013's official film selection is the star-studded documentary Last Shop Standing; this year's ambassador is none other than reputed analog lover Jack White; and the vinyl holiday's official poster features Jimi Hendrix. It all sounds so sweet, just like honey.

OK, choose one worth keeping:

Where's the option for "avoid Record Store Day at all costs"?

HAPPY BDAY TOOTS (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 28 February 2013 16:33 (twelve years ago)

yeah screw record stores!

brimstead, Thursday, 28 February 2013 16:36 (twelve years ago)

no, it's more that i support my local record stores all year long and i don't feel like fighting off collector scum for "exclusives".

HAPPY BDAY TOOTS (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 28 February 2013 16:39 (twelve years ago)

cool if record stores make $$$ on this day, but, yeah, i'm with jon. not a big fan of manufactured collectors items.

tylerw, Thursday, 28 February 2013 16:42 (twelve years ago)

or collectors items in general! i don't really care if something is limited edition or w/e.

Add another one:

Echo & The Bunnymen’s 1980 debut album Crocodiles will be reissued for Record Store Day in a new 180-gram audiophile pressing on red vinyl by reissue specialist Vinyl 180, the label announced in an e-mail newsletter this week. No further details have been revealed, and it’s not yet known whether it will be a U.K.-only release or also put out in the U.S.

Wait a minute, RECORD STORE DAY IS ON 4/20?

ARE YOU HIRING A NANNY OR A SHAMAN (Phil D.), Thursday, 28 February 2013 16:50 (twelve years ago)

Shouldn't that require all Record Store Day items to be double gatefold LPs (preferably with cover art by Roger Dean)?

Record Store Day 2013 just got a little more star power thanks to a pair of exclusive Bob Dylan releases.

According to Dylan's official site, Columbia Records will be putting out a 7" vinyl single led by a demo version of "Wigwam," originally released as a single from 1970's Self Portrait album.

The "Wigwam" demo will be accompanied by "Thirsty Boots," a cover of a song originally written and recorded by Civil Rights-era folksinger Eric Andersen. Recorded by Dylan for the Self Portrait sessions, "Thirsty Boots" will also be included on the upcoming Bootleg Series Vol. 10, a compilation release that will reportedly focus on the period between 1969's Nashville Skyline and 1973's Dylan.

Lots of cool stuff comes out on record store day but I agree that the "exclusive 7" of some song you already have" is lame. Idk, I am definitely not collector scum and manage to obtain one or two good things every year.

I'll try to get the Huskers thing, which should be NO PROBLEM in Minneapolis on record store day

i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Saturday, 2 March 2013 00:43 (twelve years ago)

but i don't think it's the whole record, only a few songs?

That "Last Shop Standing" thing I see all the time on shop counters, it's not long and yet it's always full-price

Mark G, Saturday, 2 March 2013 21:48 (twelve years ago)

I wish there were more things along the lines of the golden ticket from Charlie and The Chocolate Factory: was it Big Star who put a few original pressings in with the RSD reissue batch? I'd be more into the idea of getting a nicely done reissue that might just might possibly contain a rare original. Or a ticket to meet Oompa Loompas. But basically, anything to add a little more excitement to what really seemed like the worst and most automated record shopping experience I can imagine, when I briefly stopped by last year.

I am really getting annoyed by record store day. To the point that I wish my local places would close on that day, out of protest.

Austin, Monday, 4 March 2013 01:19 (twelve years ago)

they make a lot of money that day so no chance. But this ltd edition stuff is bollocks, make enough to go round.

Vote in the ILM 70s poll please! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Monday, 4 March 2013 01:28 (twelve years ago)

i don't care about RSD but i don't begrudge anyone for participating, it's not like i HAVE to go shopping that day and be annoyed that it's not a regular un-crowded day at the record store
