Which bands/events should I see? Which ones should I avoid? Schedule here.

Jody Beth Rosen, Wednesday, 2 October 2002 18:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Dear god! It's like cable TV. A million channels.. all a snoozefest.

Well, I'm guessing Bunnybrains, Cex, Flin Flon, Hella, Oxes, and Stereo Totale might be fun and/or funny... as for the other 734 bands... *shudder*

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 18:23 (twenty-three years ago)

I heard a Boyracer record in a record store last year & as I remember, i liked it - but it was a split LP with Hula Hoop - so it may not have even been them....

David Cross (Mr. Show) is funny... and if it's David Cross of King Crimson doing a solo gig - that's even funnier.

Heard a lot about Pretty Girls Make Graves -

Fleshtones can be fun.....

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 18:33 (twenty-three years ago)

mmm Bright Eyes. And Ghost.

iamemo (bnw), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 18:43 (twenty-three years ago)

good god, does it even matter?? so many! roll a fucking dice.

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 18:44 (twenty-three years ago)

My top shows: Hella (without a doubt), Ikara Colt (the record ain't all that, but I'm curious to see what they are like) and then a pair of bands that I've seen a million times but are always great: Calla and Secret Machines.

Yancey (ystrickler), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 18:47 (twenty-three years ago)

David Cross is appearing?? I'd be excited whether it's the Mr. Show guy OR the Crimson guy.

I've seen PGMG twice. Good live band.

I'd be excited to see Stereo Total.

The Chemical Brothers are headlining the closing night party at the Hammerstein Ballroom.

I might go see Michael Gira, Mark Eitzel, the Cherry Valence, Volta Do Mar... the New York bands they've got lined up are all pretty good, but they play here all the time anyway.

Jody Beth Rosen, Wednesday, 2 October 2002 18:48 (twenty-three years ago)

This sounds promising.

Jody Beth Rosene, Wednesday, 2 October 2002 18:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Is is important to note that "Ghost" is appairently the one form Chicago not Japan. and "Joshua" is that awful Emo band not the Western MA Psych folk guy.

But I'd see Bunnybrains, Lighting Bolt,Sianspheric,Wolf Eyes

brg30 (brg30), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 19:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Yay! Stereo Total!

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 3 October 2002 00:10 (twenty-three years ago)

a little dispiriting to see Cex endorsed as fun/funny. maybe a year or 2 ago, definitely (or when w/ Grand Buffet), but his last couple shows have scared the shit out of me. in a good way. must see.

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 3 October 2002 04:01 (twenty-three years ago)

PGMG are awful, IMO. Saw them at Siren Fest and was BORED PANTLESS.
Ted Leo and Radio 4 are playing a show out here in Jersey this Saturday - if you wants to see them outside of CMJ territory e-mail me for nfo and I will get you in for free.

The Dirtbombs
Dressy Bessy
Essex Green (Primrose is burrowed into my skull rather heavily)
French Kicks (Young Lawyer used to be burrowed into my skull rather heavily)
Hissyfits
Ikara Colt (they is my peeeee-pow! Though their tunes may be a bit lacking at present, they'll probably break something on a fairly large scale, which should be fun)
Joy Zipper
Kid Koala
Kingsbury Manx
Moldy Peaches
The No-No's
Of Montreal
Okkervil River
Polyphonic Spree (album's average, but live it could be rather grate)
PGMG (I fall into the 'liking them' camp)

Mr Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 3 October 2002 07:34 (twenty-three years ago)

go see Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra, blooklun based collective that is reworking fela sound and are great live

Calexico - mariachi music meets spaghetti westerns meets psychedelia meets others stuff, good stuff

Burnt Sugar - Greg Tate's band and lineups can shift, approaches cabn sh8ift but tends to be fascinating,. if you klike the way he writes you should check out the band becaus eit is a musical translation of his writing (to my ears)

Sultan 32 - one of the leading figures on the global electronica scene which I think is one of the most interesting things ogoing on in music at presnt. HIs party Globesonice is one of my fave activities amd the muisc is amazing. Def go see him

H (Heruy), Thursday, 3 October 2002 17:51 (twenty-three years ago)

antibalas - seen 'em 3 times, i would strongly recomend if you're going to search 1 band, search these guys.

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 17:20 (twenty-two years ago)

So who all on ILM are planning to go to CMJ? After a couple weeks of being wishywashy, I bit the bullet and bought plane tickets. I'm not planning on registering, though, so my showgoing strategy will be to stay at one club each night. To those who are going, what are your suggestions for single-club lineups? Here's what I'm thinking, after a cursory glane at the schedule:

Wednesday:
Warsaw (Paint It Black, Trial By Fire, onelinedrawing, Owls, Denali, Strike Anywhere, Milemarker, The Explosion, Pedro The Lion)

Thursday:
Irving Plaza (Enon, Black Heart Procession, Blonde Redhead, Calexico, !!!, Yeah Yeah Yeahs)
Warsaw (Washdown, Oranges Band, The Pattern, Pretty Girls Make Graves, Ted Leo/ Pharmacists)

Friday:
Knitting Factory (Semiautomatic, Young People, Hella, Deerhoof)
Northsix (Armor For Sleep, Schatzi, Common Rider, Shiner, Oxes, Har Mar Superstar)

Saturday:
Irving Plaza (Desaparecidos, Good Life, Now It's Overhead, Azure Ray, Rilo Kiley, Cursive, Bright Eyes)
Knitting Factory (Portastatic, Destroyer, Radar Brothers, Britt Daniel, Crooked Fingers, Imperial Teen)
Luxx (The Vexers, Natural History, Turing Machine, Secret Machines, A.R.E. Weapons, W.I.T., Larry Tee)
Mercury Lounge (David Cross, Iron and Wine, Jason Loewenstein, Arlo, Hot Hot Heat, Ugly Casanova)

Nick Mirov (nick), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 01:51 (twenty-two years ago)

The Walkmen 2:00am / French Kicks 1:00 am
on Friday at the Bowery Ballroom.

stanley, Wednesday, 23 October 2002 04:27 (twenty-two years ago)

The Walkmen 2:00am / French Kicks 1:00 am
on Friday at the Bowery Ballroom.

I think the Walkmen should only be seen at 2 a.m. Or later.

Jody Beth Rosen, Wednesday, 23 October 2002 04:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd be all over that show if I hadn't just seen the French Kicks this past weekend. Maybe if Deerhoof ends early (that's the show I'm leaning towards at the moment) I'll head over to the Bowery and see if I can get in.

Nick Mirov (nick), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 06:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Crieky, Ari Up's playing. I thought she'd given up music altogether.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 10:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll be at the Hella/Deerhoof show in all likelihood, although Hella and Ex-Models are playing on Tuesday. I will absolutely be at Luxx on Saturday for the Secret Machines. If you haven't seen them yet you need to Nick.

I am also planning on seeing (I have a badge):

Wednesday:
Opening night festivities (Polyphonic Spree, Soundtrack of Our Lives)
Calla/Boggs/Mink Lungs @ Tonic

Thursday:
Electric 6/Kills @ Bowery
Touch & Go showcase @ Irving Plaza
Out Hud @ Opaline

Friday:
Hella @ Knit
Oxes @ North 6
Arab on Radar @ Tribeca
We Ragazzi @ Village Underground

Saturday:
Ikara Colt @ Warsaw
Secret Machines/Natural History/Turing Machine @ Luxx
Explosions in the Sky @ Brooklyn Lyceum
Victory at Sea @ Acme

That's my list for now.

Yancey (ystrickler), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 13:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Yancey, I am indeed tempted by the Secret Machines show, but when it's up against the Merge and Saddle Creek showcases... ugh, I may end up doing some showhopping after all.

This is probably a dumb question, but will the Calla show on Wednesday be better than the Jade Tree showcase? Because I'm not particularly thrilled about the Jade Tree show, although I'd like to see the Owls. Although you did previously voice your love for Calla... I'll have to search for some mp3s and get back to you on that.

Nick Mirov (nick), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 19:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, the Calla show is a Arena Rock showcase. The Mink Lungs are excellent live, while the Boggs I am not so high on (although their upcoming album was described to me by their singer as Kid A with banjos). Calla is wonderful live. I've seen them God knows how many times now. They had a bad spell where their shows were lackluster, but their first show in about six months (which was with the Walkmen a month or so ago) was really great.

I'm not a Jade Tree fan. I like Strike Anywhere (mainly because a friend is in the band) and Turing Machine (friends again, and also because they're incredible). So I couldn't tell you which would be better. Calla is very gloomy, Ennio Morricone-ish pop. They recently opened for Nick Cave. You should just download some stuff. Their new album (which comes out in January) is really fantastic. They're among my favorite bands.

Yancey (ystrickler), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 19:32 (twenty-two years ago)

the Boggs I am not so high on

Me neither. It's an interesting gimmick but it grows old quickly.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 19:36 (twenty-two years ago)

It's an interesting gimmick but it grows old quickly.

What's the gimmick again?

Yancey (ystrickler), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

The Pogues do Appalachian folk.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 19:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess. What I dislike about them is just that they aren't very good bluegrass musicians. I love bluegrass, it's the sound I grew up with. I went to the Galax Fiddler's Convention year after year, and there's no way the Boggs are good enough to even play in the parking lot there. I appreciate what they are trying to do, and they are very nice, sincere guys, but so far they're just not up to snuff.

Yancey (ystrickler), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

What I dislike about them is just that they aren't very good bluegrass musicians.

It's true; they're not.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 20:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I should also say that I know that my criticism of the Boggs isn't really fair. I know they are not trying to play authentic hillbilly music. I know that they are putting a slant on it. Yet having grown up with that music, and having family members who play it, my listening does demand a high level of purity for that style to agree with me.

Yancey (ystrickler), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 20:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Stand in line and pay money to see Blonde Redhead, Destroyer, Dirtbombs, Deerhoof, and Imperial Teen.

Walk across the street to see Ted Leo & The Pharmacists, Enon, and Fourtet.

You're on your own regarding Sigur Ros.

(side note - say hi to all of the beautiful label/media/radio people for me!)

dan (dan), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 22:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Just came back from Radio 4 and Soundtracks of Or Lives at the Bowery Ballroom.

Radio 4 were terrific, sort of a Gang of 4 with bongos. I will search their records.

Soundtracks of Our Lives were great live. I can see the Who and the middle-period Verve comparisons. Maybe I'll go see them again Sunday.

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 31 October 2002 09:20 (twenty-two years ago)

haha. Alex Skolnick Trio!!

Wyndham Earl, Thursday, 31 October 2002 12:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I was at the Bowery press thing and then stayed for Polyphonic Spree. Then headed over to the Arena Rock showcase where I met the lovely Nick Mirov...

Yancey (ystrickler), Thursday, 31 October 2002 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

(side note - say hi to all of the beautiful label/media/radio people for me!)

Well your at it cut Moose's fro for me.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 31 October 2002 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Friday night, The Walkmen and French Kicks. Check em out.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 31 October 2002 17:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I remember hearing of Stereo Total cause Iggy Pop said their CD was his favorite of the year. Love Ugly Casonova. Hot Hot Heat ROCKS.

Sigur Ros is also "the next big thing". Or maybe, later.

David Allen, Thursday, 31 October 2002 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

four years pass...

So... it's October 2007. Is anyone talking about CMJ? Did I miss a thread? Or does nobody care? Here's the link to the roster, fwiw

Billy Pilgrim, Thursday, 11 October 2007 20:29 (eighteen years ago)

dan selzer, Monday, 15 October 2007 16:25 (seventeen years ago)

I'm going to see Mika Miko and Pre at Sarah Lawrence tonight. That should be fun. Will I be the oldest person in the audience by a good 10 years?

dan selzer, Monday, 15 October 2007 16:26 (seventeen years ago)

How do you know David Byrne and Lou Reed won't be there?! I keep seeing articles about them being out on the town.

Whiney, didn't you work for CMJ (or do you still)? Did you get to plan the whole shebang?

curmudgeon, Monday, 15 October 2007 16:38 (seventeen years ago)

Well, Sarah Lawrence is a bit far to bike to.

dan selzer, Monday, 15 October 2007 17:18 (seventeen years ago)

Whiney, didn't you work for CMJ (or do you still)? Did you get to plan the whole shebang?

I worked for 'em until June 2006, but I didn't have much to do with the marathon. I worked at the hypothetical monthly magazine.
