Is the Fall's 'Bill is dead' the most romantic song ever written?

Or is it's strength in revealing that legendary grouch Mark E Smith is just a pussycat after all?

It is an astonishingly beautiful song, especially in the context of the Fall's customary raucousness.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 19:47 (twenty-three years ago)

No. It can be the second most romantic song ever written if you'd like.

(I think it's rubbish, actually.)

"You dress today as if for riding school
Your legs are so cool"
-those lines always hit the spot for me. Wholeheartedly agree with Martin, a fantastic, unexpected classic.

an anomaly in the fall back catalogue
but, a great song regardless. something different from them. not of the class of the 80-82 stuff, but its very good, and, yes, romantic

I think it's crap too. It's only real stength seems to be that it's so unexpected coming from Mr. Smith.

Enid Roach (Enid Roach), Thursday, 3 October 2002 17:54 (twenty-three years ago)

what's up with him, anyway? why's he so mad? what's his problem?

this is a serious answer. a curt, glib response will suit it fine.

I lurve it, but I don't really regard it as romantic so much as it is just kind of wistful and sad.

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 4 October 2002 00:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Agreed- an amazing tune. "Birthday" from The Marshall Suite album is the only other Fall 'love'song I can think of, but in terms of being wistful & sad I think "Edinburgh Man" comes closest.

What about "Rose"? That's kind of lovely, but mainly I think as yes it's coming from MES.

The effect of the fall version is very different though. What stands out are the modesty of this dreama and how unconvicing it is that the narrator will ever go to spain
