sounds CD-rific. haven't had one at home in years. its actually a nice philips dvd player. my yamaha natural sound receiver loves it! so do my 40 year old speakers.
playing an ambient disc by a group called Owwl right now. rufus was not impressed. he said "i could just record a jackhammer and call my album Lizard..." which is a ten year old's way of saying EVEN I COULD DO THAT. but i dig this cd.
candi staton import comp i was playing sounded nice and shiny.
i'm like a kid on digital christmas!
this is the candi comp if you are looking for a good one:
http://www.amazon.com/Candi-Staton/dp/B0000DG5N0
sounds nice. in a digi way.

gas or sunroof! might do in a pinch.

― scott seward, Tuesday, 5 March 2013 00:54 (twelve years ago)
might check out something called: Pimmon - Electronic Tax Return
on tigerbeat6. remember that label? dedicated to john blades and the loop orchestra. have no idea...
― scott seward, Tuesday, 5 March 2013 00:56 (twelve years ago)
wow, my copy of jesus lizard's liar sounds awful. all muffled and cruddy. its a canadian copy too. what's up with that canada?
― scott seward, Tuesday, 5 March 2013 01:11 (twelve years ago)
meanwhile, this cd by ilx's own tarfumes the escape goat sounds insaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaane. in a great way. from 2008.
― scott seward, Tuesday, 5 March 2013 01:13 (twelve years ago)
we gotta get an ilx threeway collab between milton parker, tarfumes, and DR#W. that would be sick.
― scott seward, Tuesday, 5 March 2013 01:14 (twelve years ago)
if you ever see a nice looking two-disc buddy holly set called: The Buddy Holly Collection - 50 Classic Recordings put out by MCA in 1993 do me a favor and throw it in the river. if there is a river near you. just abysmal.
― scott seward, Tuesday, 5 March 2013 01:27 (twelve years ago)
to erase the memory of the horrible we don't give a shit about buddy holly who the fuck cares people will buy anything just give us your money asshole buddy holly set i put on Solefald's Red For Fire: An Icelandic Odyssey Part I. sounds okay. the saxophone especially.

yeah i am all about the electro/acoustic when it comes to CDs. i am totally gonna raid the CDs for sale in my store when i go there tomorrow. i've got all kinds of cool experimental discs for sale that nobody will ever buy where i am. that john cage box is MINE.
― scott seward, Tuesday, 5 March 2013 01:58 (twelve years ago)
The remaster of silk degrees that came out 3 or so years ago is stunning. Maybe just because I was used to the first cd's crappiness. The new one really brings out a lot of brightness that the first cd issue lacks.
― brimstead, Tuesday, 5 March 2013 02:18 (twelve years ago)
Also, piper at the gates of dawn remaster (from last year or w/e). You can really feel all the different acoustic spaces that the songs inhibit, it's incredible. "Flaming" especially sounds trippier. I grew up on 80s-manuactured CDs so this stuff might not be as revelatory if you're familiar with the original vinyl, idk.
― brimstead, Tuesday, 5 March 2013 02:25 (twelve years ago)
Oh in terms of electronic music/electro acoustic, you gotta try out the Thomas Koner stuff that Type records reissued a few years ago. Heavy deep low droning gongs and shit.
― brimstead, Tuesday, 5 March 2013 02:28 (twelve years ago)
Aww, thanks!
If you don't already have this, by all means, grab it: The Bill Dixon Orchestra: Intents and Purposes. Aside from being an amazingly unique record -- stands decidedly apart from its contemporaries -- the remaster, surprisingly, shits all over the vinyl. One of the most three-dimensional CDs I've heard.
Is your Yamaha receiver one of the silver-face/wood-box dealies?
― Tarfumes The Escape Goat, Tuesday, 5 March 2013 02:28 (twelve years ago)
If by some chance you have the MFSL version of Nevermind, that is one really really great sounding cd.
― brimstead, Tuesday, 5 March 2013 02:31 (twelve years ago)
naw, my receiver isn't vintage. its nice though! probably from the 90's or something. its a recent home receiver that actually tskes vinyl into consideration. records sound great through it. my old 4000 pound marantz was pooping out. it needs work. and i ended up with the yamaha and i kinda dig it.
― scott seward, Tuesday, 5 March 2013 02:42 (twelve years ago)
i would listen to all these mfsl CDs.
i have a fancy john williams soundtrack star wars cd at the store and that thing sounds nuts. gotta bring that home.
― scott seward, Tuesday, 5 March 2013 02:43 (twelve years ago)
Cool, Yamaha stuff sounds great. My old Marantz amp died (right channel crapped out), local hi-fi repair guy said he can't fix it. He might have just given up, but it's a bummer. I loved the way it sounded.
― Tarfumes The Escape Goat, Tuesday, 5 March 2013 02:46 (twelve years ago)

― scott seward, Tuesday, 5 March 2013 02:46 (twelve years ago)
i did not buy it from canuck audio mart though.
Oh weird, the one I had before my Marantz was just like that, had it for about 15 years. "Pure direct" function was great.
― Tarfumes The Escape Goat, Tuesday, 5 March 2013 02:48 (twelve years ago)
its kinda made for home audio. not superdolby homestadium surroundmonstersound. its 2-channel. though i'm sure your t.v. would sound fine if you hooked it up.
― scott seward, Tuesday, 5 March 2013 02:48 (twelve years ago)
I will cosign Brimstead's rec of the Pink Floyd Piper remaster
RULES
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 5 March 2013 02:49 (twelve years ago)
Those were some of the last decent affordable 2-channel receivers that were made; now receivers are all 5.1 or whatever. I actually ran my VCR through it for a few years, sounded good.
― Tarfumes The Escape Goat, Tuesday, 5 March 2013 02:50 (twelve years ago)
i was listening to a zelphabet cd. those things sound great. weird shit/electronic is really the way to go with CDs. ed osborn/elliott sharp/emil beaulieau/evil moisture. the sharp thing is amazing. the evil moisture thing is evil.
― scott seward, Tuesday, 5 March 2013 02:50 (twelve years ago)
oh! i have a yamaha CD player that looks like it should be married to that receiver. i wish i could teleport it to you as it has not been used since clinton administration.
― Philip Nunez, Tuesday, 5 March 2013 02:52 (twelve years ago)
i have never done the home movie theatre thing. once years ago i lived with a girlfriend who decided to buy a huge stereo system and one of those huge wooden t.v. shelf/bureau/chest of drawers/whatever monstrosity pieces of furniture and we got a laser disc player and hooked it up to huge speakers and it was jaw-dropping. the sound was out of this world. i got suspiria and all kinds of great stuff and was in heaven. so loud! and laser disc sound was magic. i don't know why.
― scott seward, Tuesday, 5 March 2013 02:54 (twelve years ago)
all these old metal promos...well, they aren't gonna play themselves. better dig in.
― scott seward, Tuesday, 5 March 2013 03:00 (twelve years ago)
played some great black metal. vetus obscurum. dude from krohm. nasty. playing CDs kinda changes the vibe of the house. this house is so wooden. my old speakers and turntable are encased in wood. very woody vibe. now all these different sounds. tarfumes changed things around here in a hurry!
― scott seward, Tuesday, 5 March 2013 03:02 (twelve years ago)
you guys ever hear of Sujo? they put stuff on on Inam records. but they do these teeny tiny editions so i fear many people have never heard them. local personality ned raggett would love them i think. i think they're great. kind of a dark shoegazey thing. skirting the borders of metallic. but not metal. heavy though. at times. lots of great not-metal out there. again with the utech thing. it speaks to me. very hypnotic. great textures. depth. its very well-made.
― scott seward, Tuesday, 5 March 2013 03:14 (twelve years ago)
Actually the name is familiar...
― Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 5 March 2013 03:40 (twelve years ago)
they're good.
now i'm listening to Demian Johnston. i like him too. seattle? portland? he puts out great stuff.

what elliott sharp record was it?
electronic/industrial stuff, check this cd out:
http://www.discogs.com/Function-Incubation/release/4311717
had it for a few days and can't stop listening to it
― Crackle Box, Tuesday, 5 March 2013 11:52 (twelve years ago)
I think you should listen to something that simply wouldn't work on vinyl, like The Necks.
― they all are afflicted with a sickness of existence (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 5 March 2013 13:43 (twelve years ago)
"what elliott sharp record was it?"
it was just one piece on the zelphabet cd. zelphabet series was noise/weirdness A-Z. that was the E disc.
― scott seward, Tuesday, 5 March 2013 15:07 (twelve years ago)

As you are one of the few around here to ever go to bat for new age music, I would recommend "Wunjo" by Giles Reaves. An Amazon reviewer:
turn on the black light, light up some incense, light a candle, too, fire up the bong, and pour yourself some dark stout & put this on
― It's All Posable Colaboration (Dan Peterson), Tuesday, 5 March 2013 20:45 (twelve years ago)
will check it out if possible. the new age thing.
tried to play that scheer album on 4ad and that did not sound good to me at all. plus, that cover is so gross. and i'm a metal fan!
put on Returnal by Oneohtrix Point Never and wasn't feeling that either. i know everyone here loves him, right? its fine and all, but i guess i'm never in the right mood. sound-wise, it doesn't really thrill me. and that's when i kinda wish i was just playing an old new age tape.
BUT i am truly enjoying the Arkhonia album i grabbed from the store. probably something that forced exposure sent me for my old decibel column. its lovely stuff. and the sound is heaven. expansive. it really opens up for something so minimal.

i'm making a mental note. christoph sent me his new collaboaration with locrian on vinyl. i love his stuff. never heard the merzbow one! when he played at my store last year he gave me two beautiful records he had made last year and they were the tiniest editions. like edition of 40.
here's what i've been dipping into tonight:
nagelfar - virus westnechochwen - azimuths to the underworldklaxon guele - infininimentintaglio - s/t (one of my favorite albums of the last ten years)tetragrammaton - elegy for native tongues (another great one)urfaust - drei rituale jenseits des kosmossujo - terransujo - diasporaoctober falls - the streams of the end (best!)century plants - electrics (bestest!)blood red throne - altered genesismoat - the sun is destroying us allcloaks - versus grainvopat - silhouettesrobedoor - pained transformationdornenreich - her von welken nachtennotekillers - we're here to help (besterer!)agressor - medieval ritesred harvest - a greater darknessdrautran - throne of the depths
