Mark G, Friday, 8 March 2013 06:56 (twelve years ago)

(strike that, was thinking of Ruckzuck)

Mark G, Friday, 8 March 2013 06:56 (twelve years ago)

I'd argue that Her Majesty finishes abruptly rather than just STOPS; I think to fit in this category it has to feel as if the tape got cut.

they all are afflicted with a sickness of existence (Scik Mouthy), Friday, 8 March 2013 08:08 (twelve years ago)

But "Her Maj" IS a tape cut - it was originally part of the medley between "Mean Mr Mustard" and "Polythene Pam" - hence the crashing chord at the start - but Macca felt it didn't fit so it was cut straight out of the tape and added at the end by an engineer who had been told to never lose a Beatles master tape by George Martin. Sorry, I know too much Fabs trivia.

Rob M Revisited, Friday, 8 March 2013 08:44 (twelve years ago)

So technically we're both right, the song does end abruptly but it is also a tape cut.

Rob M Revisited, Friday, 8 March 2013 08:45 (twelve years ago)

I didn't know that, though doubtless I've got a book somewhere that'd tell me. I bow to your superior Fab Fact recall; but I still think it feels like it finishes properly rather than gets cut off at an arbitrary point!

they all are afflicted with a sickness of existence (Scik Mouthy), Friday, 8 March 2013 09:04 (twelve years ago)

Gravitar - Alpha-115
The Pop Group - The Boys from Brazil
The Fall - C'n'C/S. Mithering

Josh and D.A.M. (Drugs A. Money), Friday, 8 March 2013 09:06 (twelve years ago)

This phenomenon used to irritate the shit out of me, btw. I'd deliberately never put songs with this on mixtapes for instance. Now I'm planning a playlist stuffed with 'em.

they all are afflicted with a sickness of existence (Scik Mouthy), Friday, 8 March 2013 09:10 (twelve years ago)

Joe Jackson -- Happy Loving Couples ("all right, that's enough" at the end of a coda

Cunga, Friday, 8 March 2013 09:13 (twelve years ago)

"Life's so slow" by Lower, but I seem to be the only person in the world who remembers them.

Rob M Revisited, Friday, 8 March 2013 09:19 (twelve years ago)

If you edit out the sound of a record scratching, then "Every little counts" by New Order perhaps? Might be a nice end to your playlist.

Rob M Revisited, Friday, 8 March 2013 09:23 (twelve years ago)

Trail of Dead "Mistakes and Regrets"
Busta Rhymes "Gimme Some Mo" (album version)

Surprised Wire haven't been mentioned - there's loads of examples on "Pink flag" and "Chairs missing". Not tape cut stops, but songs that just stop. "Another the letter" springs to mind.

I've just realised both of my contributions to this thread belong in a thread of their own: Songs that end with the music stopping but the vocals carrying on

I am listening to Black Flag "The First Four Years" and there are a few candidates for this thread and for Tom's thread.
