After a lot of deliberation I figured I would start the rollout at a nice symbolical number... Here it is, starting with number 420!

420. Scorpions - The Sails of Charon (233 points, 2 votes, 0 #1's)

lol 420

Algerian Goalkeeper, Saturday, 9 March 2013 02:40 (twelve years ago)

Hahaha. Both @ 420 and @ Scorpions.

emil.y, Saturday, 9 March 2013 02:41 (twelve years ago)

Though of course Scorpions do have a very credible ally in Dieter Dierks, ex of Ash Ra and Cosmic Jokers, etc.

emil.y, Saturday, 9 March 2013 02:43 (twelve years ago)

wasn't their first album more psych krautrock of its time?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Saturday, 9 March 2013 02:44 (twelve years ago)

I voted for that! Saw the Scorps last summer on supposedly their last tour (though it looks like they're playing in Germany in May). They did a couple 70s numbers but not that one.

xp More on Scorpions, it's an underrated song from '78 album Taken By Force, was cool to see it nominated (I presume the one other voter was the one who did that?). I guess their rep was ruined by the bad stuff they put out in the late 80s but up through 1982's Blackout they were just a notch (and a half maybe) below Judas Priest as far as one of the key metal bands.

That is an excellent song! From the Sheet Music album, depressingly still relevant. I'm halfway through my giant bourbon cocktail, and about to start some cartoon movie with the wife (Wreck-It Ralph?) so I'm out.

Fastnbulbous, Saturday, 9 March 2013 03:13 (twelve years ago)

More on Scorpions, it's an underrated song from '78 album Taken By Force, was cool to see it nominated (I presume the one other voter was the one who did that?).

Actually, no. I nominated it and it was #89 on my ballot. HOWEVER, I didn't actually finish my ballot until I was at work and couldn't submit it. I ended up just sending the top 25 to AG via FB. I feel a little sad now that I see "Sails of Charon" came in at 420. I wonder if my vote would have pushed it over 400?

"Sound Chaser" would have been my #53, which really hurts.

Who was my Primitive Calculators compadre?

I love those two tracks and gave them a lost-cause boost about five minutes before the deadline (you know, b/c voting in the five months prior makes too much sense).

unprepared guitar (Edward III), Saturday, 16 March 2013 07:20 (twelve years ago)

On first listen, I don't dislike "Mother Sky", and there is stuff by Can that I really like, but I'm interested to know why people think it's the #2 rock song of the 70s.
Well I didn't put it quite as high as #2 and am crap at explaining things anyway.... but for me it's to do with how full-on and relentless it is - the way the non-stop heavy backbeat keeps you locked into all those epic onslaughts of jagged guitar.
It's definitely the track that always comes to mind to me as a ROCK! moment for Can, as opposed to a lot of their stuff which although I really like I also feel doesn't quite fit the parameters of this poll.
Plus the bit where the drum solo is stiched in over the normal drum track is just the coolest-sounding thing ever.

oldsockstofu (Mr Andy M), Saturday, 16 March 2013 08:52 (twelve years ago)

Incidentally was just listening to Jump Into The Fire for the first time in ages and was finding it weirdly similar to Monster Movie/Soundtracks-era Can.

oldsockstofu (Mr Andy M), Saturday, 16 March 2013 08:53 (twelve years ago)

You know what song was really robbed in this poll?

Pink Floyd - One Of These Days

acid in the style of tenpole tudor (NickB), Saturday, 16 March 2013 10:34 (twelve years ago)

Faves from the songs that I'd never heard before the rollout:

The Groundhogs – Cherry Red
Faust – The Sad Skinhead
The Static – Don’t Let Me Stop You
Scars – Horrorshow
Gong – Master Builder
Kleenex – Eisiger Wind
Simple Minds – Changeling (srsly surprised how good this is)
Judas Priest – Dissident Aggressor
The Soft Boys – I Wanna Destroy You
Sonics Rendezvous Band – City Slang
Todd Rundgren – Is It My Name?
Faces - That’s All You Need

oldsockstofu (Mr Andy M), Saturday, 16 March 2013 11:42 (twelve years ago)

Simple Minds – Changeling (srsly surprised how good this is)

the second, third and fourth simple minds albums are all really great post-punk takes on funk, kraftwerk and roxy music. fifth album (new gold dream) is also good really good, but that's more of a shiny, though expansive, new pop thing. wasn't until album number six that they really started to get get all bloated and bombastic. and i hate everything after that as much as the next person.

acid in the style of tenpole tudor (NickB), Saturday, 16 March 2013 16:23 (twelve years ago)

Red Transistor were awesome! I only just found out about them from this here thread>>

"Baba O'Riley" at #1 - also the highest-ranking classic rock radio staple on our poll.

Supertramp at #7! Kansas at #18! Maybe that latter one is a Guitar Hero/South Park thing?

so I finally got around to comparing my ballot to the results and it's kinda freaky. I don't pay much attention to the track polls, I'm more of an albums guy, and my unranked section was kind of thrown together in a ballot stuffing last minute rush, so I was surprised that 87% of my ballot placed, and of the 13 tracks I didn't place, 8 of them occupy a single vote tie for spot #551. not gonna expend any energy explicating the possible implications of this statistical anomaly except to say huh, weird, and maybe I should make a #551 compilation.

tracks that didn't place are in bold

It's not that weird. About 87% of all nominated tracks were in the main list, because the main list was incredibly long.
