Foreigner "4" vs. Journey "Escape" - Which is the most Arena Rockinest

Released mere weeks apart in July, 1981, these two albums would go on to rule the AOR airwaves.

The singles "Urgent", "Waiting for a Girl Like You" and "Juke Box Hero" made "4" Foreigner's only #1 album in America and the likes of "Don't Stop Believin',", "Who's Crying Now" and "Open Arms" allowed "Escape" to sell 12 million copes sold worldwide. Both still are indicative time capsules of the era, embodying both the good and cringe-worthy aspects of this time.

Which is better and why?

I'm going with Foreigner because the most memorable songs were not the schlocky balladry of Journey even though album cuts might render them a little more equal in that respect.

The singles from these albums remind me of doing newspaper paste-up. I was usually half-asleep at that job, my fingertips were always covered with wax, and these songs played on a little transistor radio that must have been the manager's, since no one ever turned it off or changed the station. When the DJs got tried of playing Foreigner and Journey, they'd play Christopher Cross' "Sailing," then they'd play Foreigner and Journey some more.

One of these albums is slightly less awful than the other, but since I remember both as instruments of torture, I decline to choose.

4 very very easily. 'juke-box hero' might be the best of aor foreigner, 'urgent' has thomas dolby and jr walker, and 'waiting for a girl like you' is untouchable. also mutt lange. i'll take lou gramm as a vocalist over perry also though they're both pretty great. often wondered if foreigner was in some way the band eddie van halen wanted van halen to be post-roth.

Foreigner, obviously.

Both are great albums, but in terms of Arena Rock, Foreigner's album wins.

i feel like 4 is both the canonical and the correct answer here

Journey's rhythm section was always too flat-footed. Foreigner swings.

Tunes - Journey
Musicianship - Journey
Hair - tie
Ugliness of lead singer - Foreigner

Journey win.

I don't really care for either of these albums "Urgent" is incredible so I'm gonna go with "4".

Oh, that's interesting. I don't know if I've heard all of 4 but I've never found a Foreigner album to be consistently solid, which Escape most certainly is imo.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Sunday, 17 March 2013 00:03 (twelve years ago)

I actually think I'd call 4 their third best album, fwiw (behind their first and third).

xhuxk, Sunday, 17 March 2013 02:32 (twelve years ago)

I love how we pit Journey and Foreigner/Steve Perry and Lou Gramm against each other. Granted, it's been me who did it the previous two times, but I applaud NYCNative for carrying that torch.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 17 March 2013 09:06 (twelve years ago)

I was in the prime Journey crosshairs in the early '80s, and I'm proud (or maybe the better word is perplexed) that I've never owned anything by Journey. Not a tape, not an LP, not a CD, not MP3s, not the 2600 game, nothing, in any format, not even the greatest hits. I think once I recorded "Wheel in the Sky" off the radio, when I was wont to do that. Foreigner ... I think the same holds true for the time, but over the years I know I've accumulated the odd track or two, and I love hearing "Urgent" and "Waiting for a Girl Like You" (a proto "Miami Vice" song if ever there was one) on the radio. But then I hear "Jukebox Hero" or "Hot Blooded" and I think, gah, what pieces of shit. Still, I'm less likely to wince when I hear Foreigner.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 17 March 2013 13:35 (twelve years ago)

Isn't "Open Arms" on Escape? Can't fucking stand that shit.
