Ragged glory: raspy sax, shouty backing vocals, everybody knocking the hell out of their instruments

I always thought I hated the barroom soul sound, but Springsteen doing Spirit In The Night on the Agora 1978 bootleg is rocking my world tonight. See 12:00 to 13:30 of this clip (I can only find the full show, sorry) for the full-on-intensity, sweaty breathless vibe I mean.

But when I put on the studio version, it's really tame in comparison. Obviously I can and will check out more Bruce boots, but other than live stuff what other acts managed to capture this sound on tape?

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 13 March 2013 23:02 (twelve years ago)

Van Morrison?

Euler, Wednesday, 13 March 2013 23:14 (twelve years ago)

except for the shouty part, James Brown?

Euler, Wednesday, 13 March 2013 23:16 (twelve years ago)

Van Morrison might be right. James Brown I dunno, even at his sweatiest he's never ragged, the playing's always somehow clean and precise.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 13 March 2013 23:20 (twelve years ago)

in what universe is James Brown not "shouty"

ismael do you have "it's too late to stop now" by van morrison? that's kinda what i thought of, it's a pretty crazed live album

u r the best magician ever. my bad levitate me pls (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 13 March 2013 23:21 (twelve years ago)

I do not. I don't mind a bit of mystic Van, but the very idea of pumped Van has put me off; possibly because my parents take him in live every tour he does, idk.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 13 March 2013 23:23 (twelve years ago)

I'll definitely check that out though.

"raspy sax, shouty backing vocals, everybody knocking the hell out of their instruments" - X-Ray Spex and Essential Logic, surely? But that doesn't really fit with the Springsteen vibe.

i came to post the ksan van morrison thing, it is at times great. maybe not quite ragged-- a lot of it is really locked in, in all the right ways.

weird hearing him introduce wild night as "our next single, which will come out next week." to me that song has just always existed.

Rip This Joint is a great shout! Can't believe it wasn't the first thing to spring to mind.

I feel like the way to answer this might be to just follow Bobby Keys around - seems like any band he plays with would naturally gravitate towards this sound.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 14 March 2013 18:53 (twelve years ago)

whaddabout Mad Dogs & Englishmen?

I cited Mad Dogs & Englishmen above; was thinking about the first Leon Russell album too but it's really on "Delta Lady" where they hit this, & there's a very ragged version of that on Mad Dogs & Englishmen!

Little Richard in general, and "Long Tall Sally" in particular.

Must be something off of a David Lynch soundtrack that fits the description, maybe something off Lost Highway or Fire Walk With Me?

I was wondering about Janis Joplin? Ball & Chain has the vibe in spades, but I don't think there's any brass on it.

Ragged Glory: The Barroom Soul Sound

I've been exploring some of the avenues on this thread, and here's the mix I came up with. Judging by how seldom these artists crop up here, I think I may have stumbled upon ILM's least-favourite genre.

This is where the last song on the mix comes from. It's incredible. I think I must never have seen Janis Joplin before, because I've never seen a performer with charisma quite like this.

Apparently Tom Jones was disapproving of the performance - he reckoned it was more shouting than singing. He's an eternal pro for all that, but check out how uncomfortable and stiff he looks.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 2 April 2013 13:13 (twelve years ago)

always thought I didn't like Janis until watching Monterey Pop & "Ball & Chain" & then I got it

Euler, Tuesday, 2 April 2013 14:08 (twelve years ago)

nice mix btw!

Euler, Tuesday, 2 April 2013 14:09 (twelve years ago)

one month passes...

Finally listened to the mix, great stuff.
Saints was a real standout for me, hadn't heard that before.
Also, I really like this type of thread: Request for examples of a certain sound, Lots of Suggestions, and then a mix to wrap it up. We should do this more often....
