LEMONHEADS: Classic or Dud?

I don't believe they've been addressed formally here in a C/D capacity.

Liked some of his/their stuff back in the early 90's, notably their quasi-hardcore sorta stuff ("Hate Your Friends"), the LOVEY album and their odd covers ("Luka," "Mrs.Robinson"). Evan Dando -- though a bit of a dippy pretty boy -- certainly exuded promise at certain points. Then he just sorta shrivelled up! What happened?

In any event, I just read a pair of books about the Manson murders (Vince Bugliosi's "Helter Skelter" and Tommy Udo's entirely suspect-but-still-entertaining "Charles Manson: Music Mayhem Murder" and Udo points out that Dando was quasi-obsessed with ol' Charlie....cribbing various lyrical passages from Charlie's songs, alluding to various bits of Manson lore/ephemera and namechecking him and other Manson Family members & victims in interviews. Dusted off my copy of LOVEY, and I'll be damned...it's all there.

That shouldn't factor into your decision, but just thought I'd throw it out there.

And lastly.....who's this Ray character that it's such a shame about?

i saw them on jenny jones a long time ago. it might have just been evan dando but i think it was all of them. i thought that was pretty cool. jenny jones! that makes them classic, i guess.

Come On Feel The Lemonheads is good too. And I've witnessed people being very enthusiastic about Ray's predecessor, Lovey.

Lovey is a pretty good record, the "Different Drum" single (and it's rather excellent b-side "Paint") is great too. At the time (here we go again...) I adored Ray and it still stands up as a good record. Come On Feel suffers badly when sat right beside Ray but does have some strong songs. The last Lemonheads album was largely rubbish, as is the solo Evan Dildo stuff.

the first 3 (hate your friends, creator and lick) were some of my favourite teenage records. I still rate lovey and the different drum 12" too. after that I've not been so enthralled. though ray is a good pop record.
the first time I saw them in 91 they were incredible. lovey tour. perfect set.

Classic, for sure. Light-hearted grungey power-pop excellence all the way. Should I bother investing in any of their other stuff while I'm at it?

Lick is also one of my fave late 80's American guitar records. "Sad Girl" is vicious and "Ever" is classic pop hardcore. Lovey is the forgotton one -- must dig it out next time I'm home.

I took Physics I in high school & not knowing anyone in the class, me & three other people who didn't know anyone ended up by default in the same lab group. So we had me to do the report writing, the geeky boy to do the math, the lazy but friendly girl who didn't show up to class much, and to run the experiments we had Ray.
Ray used to be the biggest bully in the class back in elementary school & once managed to wear his regular clothes (not uniforms like the rest of us), as I heard it, for about half a year b/c he didn't like his, and one day he chucked them all down a storm drain.
After graduating high school he started his own business, customizing & souping up flashy cars & installing massive soundsystems in them.
Anyway we were in physics class together right around 92/93 and since he tended to mess up the experiments pretty often that became our lab group theme song... it's a shame about Ray. physics = phun!

Getting on from that curiously entertaining anecdote......the Lemonheads are surely one of the most underappreciated bands of the last twenty years. Shame About Ray, Come On Feel and the first bit of Car Button Cloth are all simply celestial pop. If they'd been recorded in the 60s they'd've been tagged genius.

And lastly.....who's this Ray character that it's such a shame about?

No doubt this has been mentioned elsewhere on ILM (although I couldn't find it). The following is from an article in the Melbourne Times (May 12, 2004) on the Tote's 21st birthday celebrations:

For Richie Ramone, the celebration would be even more special ... if the Ask For Ray sign, which hung in the bar for more than a decade, could come home.

"The sign goes back as far as the days when Evan Dando lived here," Ramone says. "It was a big joke among the locals. Everyone was Ray.. The Lemonheads even did a song about it - It's a Shame About Ray."

Classic btw.

Lovey has always been by far my least favourite album, too many dodgy rock tracks (The Door, Lil Seed, Ballarat.) Stove is a good song but sounds a lot better slowed down and acoustic, Half the Time is among Dando's best work and really stands out a mile on this album. A lot of people cite this as an 'inbetween' album and I think that's maybe why I dislike it.

Ray is classic, classic, classic. I also think Creator and Lick are really strong. Car Button Cloth was an initial disapointment but for me has held up surprisingly well.

They certainly had there moments, even on car Button Cloth - "If I could talk I'd tell you" was ace. Most of the best stuff is covers or at least co-writes.

A few months ago I caught Dando playing with Tim Rogers and had the unfortunate luck to see Evan up close at the bar. He looked extremely fucking haggard. They must take a lot of care with the photos these days.

The drugs don't seem to have affected his voice any though.

I was really looking forward to Baby I'm Bored, but it never clicked for me, despite about half of it being great. I think his Melbourne show last August really put me off and I haven't returned to the album since.

The Lemonheads were pretty good.
They were one of my favorite bands when I was like 12.
I really like Ray, Lick and Car Button Cloth (I'm still convinced If I Could Talk I'd Tell You is a damn near perfect pop song). Lovey and Come on Feel certainly had their moments.
Ray is a damn near perfect pop record, plus it introduced me to Frank Mills, one of my all-time favorite songs, and in turn the Hair soundtrack, which rules.

It's been Dando and whoever he can round up since like 1990 or so.
I thought he decided to start releasing records under his own name (like Baby I'm Bored) because "Lemonheads" really hasn't meant anything for a good long while.
I'm only excited if Ben Deilly is back in the band, (and if Juliana Hatfield is on bass and backing vocals, that would be huge bonus points).

Missed your chance, his solo tour of the States last year had Juliana in those very capacities! (plus Murph from Dino Jr on drums. and possibly someone on second guitar, but I'm just guessing because he used a guitarist on the following Oz jaunt)

that was only the one gig though - sorry for you and anyone else who had to endure either Melbourne show, but Davey Lane brought in his own bassist for the rest of the tour, and the first Sydney show at least was FANTASTIC (and completed the re-run of '90s Lemon bassists by getting Billy Gibson out of the audience to sing Big Gay Heart).

yeah, I've missed both the last two (they've played the Annandale in December in 2003 and 2003) so look forward to finally catching them. People said the 2002 show was the best they've ever played evar, and Alison's definitely drumming better than she ever did.

Tom and Andy Calvert played solo sets supporting Sam Shinazzi a few weeks ago, and got up to all play together at the end. On Missing You, Andy went into the crowd to try and offer Al the tambourine he was drumming on, to general amusement.

inasmuch as lemonheads = evan dando + one ace collaborator, whether it be ben deily or tom morgan or nic dalton or whoever it happens to be at the moment, they're classic in a singer/songwriters-masquerading-as-sad-weird-catchy-buzzy-guitar-pop kinda way.

whenever it's just dando alone, or dando and a band of two lessers, it's never as good.

"into your arms," which none of the above had a hand in writing but which the dando-plus-various-aussies lineup made their own, is just plain pure pop classic.

wow. i just downloaded all the songs i remember by them and i can't believe how good they are. he really has a great voice. i love bands that do a lot of covers, though i was dissapointed by dando's version og "ballad of el goodo"

Great moment was during Evan's acoustic gig at the Corner in 2002, Tom Morgan and cohorts came on for the encore and ran through a few electric versions of early 'Heads stuff.

Yep, 7th, 8th and 9th for the Smudge gigs. May not make it to the one at the Espy though.

The opening track will be a version of There's Nobody Coming Over (previously recorded for a The Kombi Nation 7"), and Nic's singing on it is about five times better than any vocal performance he's ever put on record before. The whole thing, from what I've heard, has something of a slight country-Elvis vibe.

Jesse is directing a new Zach Braff movie, and
After nearly a year of creative duties on the Microsoft account (at San Francisco's McCann Worldgroup)--and "almost apocalyptic levels of whining"--Ben Deily has accepted the post of Associate Creative Director at an undisclosed but allegedly "wicked cool" advertising agency in the scenic idyll of Portland, Maine.
The last I heard (prob. easily googleable) Dando, Bill Stevenson, and Karl Alvarez were recording a new Lemonheads album for Vagrant.

I don't know how such a band can inspire such hatred. I mean, that Mrs Robinson cover wasn't great, as the band admit themselves, but Shame About Ray, Come On Feel and various other bits and bobs are absolutely lovely.

Ben Deily has a band now called Varsity Drag, iirc. You can hear their stuff on MySpace. I give it the thumbs up.

Incidentally, Lemonheads = total classic, particularly up to and including LOVEY. I still like the stuff after that, but not as much.

I'm new, but the C/D thing weirds me out. As much as I like the Lemonheads, they're obviously not a "classic" band -- not even in the private Rolodex of my acne-ridden heart. They're a asterisk at best. Like the Hard-Ons. Does that automatically consign them to dudhood?

Uh-uh. The first few albums are about as good as pop-punk can hope to get, and they've got a healthy double fistful of worthy tracks spread across their career in rock.

damn 'rudderless' kicks copious amounts of ass. catchy, well crafted, and somehow moving all at the same time. makes me want to get my guitar out and write some similarly styled tunes.

What amazes me is that in EVERY SONG EVER Dando does the same thing he does in "Rudderless" -- singing the first half down in his husky laid-back register, then swinging up into a higher one when things need that final push toward the end (he even kinda does this with his guitar overdubs sometimes!) -- and yet in every case it totally works! Especially in "Rudderless," really.

The new one is not the greatest thing, but it's got a few pretty terrific songs on it, and if you happen to be fond of Dando, there's just something pleasant and charming about hearing him back at it.

I liked the songs on the first two Taang albums by the OTHER GUY. He was crazy, not sure his name or what happened to him and can't be bothered to google around about it. Those records seemed kind of cool back to me back then, like a poor man's HÃ¼sker or potentially that. I haven't really listened to most of their stuff since. I hate that kind of production and can't listen to it (and no one is paying me to).

With the announcement of a new, grittier, Lemonheads album on the horizon, Fire Records will be reissuing the band's first three albums Hate Your Friends (1987), Creator (1988) and Lick (1989), which showcase the band's early punk rock roots.
Fans are rejoicing over the news that Evan Dando will be reuniting with original co-songwriter Ben Deily for the new album, which will doubtless see a return to a rawer, more noisy sound and sees Ryan Adams on production duties. Dando and Deily were co-conspirators for the first three Lemonheads albums, which saw them in full punk rock mode and sounding like an entirely different band from the subsequent commercially successful major label releases. The three albums chart the course of the band from noise punk pranksters, to international pop stars as they evolved from Deily's Lemonheads to Dando's Lemonheads.

i've caught myself blasting their entire discog this week. have always loved the weird "connection" dando makes in these painfully simple songs that's almost hard to describe. like a sad rumpled dog laying on the carpet asking for attention
