Hipsters/ people who read the Wire/ ILXors, aren't they all into black metal these days?

I think that's kind of dying out as the genre does.

ProAm Chomsky (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Wednesday, 27 March 2013 11:28 (thirteen years ago)

I was listening to black metal in2008 or so, and I'm not remotely hip, so I figure the hipsters et al probably reached their black metal peak around 2004.

Misread the title as "how do I pass a black metal fan"

Raymond Cummings, Wednesday, 27 March 2013 12:25 (thirteen years ago)

Sunn O))) is pretty hip and Wire-friendly but I don't think it is black metal exactly

yeah heard sunn0 in am appy t'other day and was wondering if the person that put it on was a hipster, wire reader or ilxor

Crackle Box, Wednesday, 27 March 2013 12:39 (thirteen years ago)

at what point did grind core and black metal become the hipster music du jour?

Whiney G. Weingarten, Wednesday, 27 March 2013 12:39 (thirteen years ago)

2003 or so.

Call the Cops, Wednesday, 27 March 2013 13:03 (thirteen years ago)

i honestly don't remember seeing any hipsters at black metal shows in 2003 or 2004, unless they just bought the records and never checked out the music.

Spectrum, Wednesday, 27 March 2013 13:18 (thirteen years ago)

It was dark, you couldn't see them.

my father will guide me up the stairs to bed (anagram), Wednesday, 27 March 2013 13:24 (thirteen years ago)

right.

Spectrum, Wednesday, 27 March 2013 13:26 (thirteen years ago)

It was later than 2003/2004 that the Wire started showing an interest in it

Step not on a loose unforgiving stone on a pyramid to paradise (Tom D.), Wednesday, 27 March 2013 15:40 (thirteen years ago)

It was in Vice Magazine by 2003 or so. The book of photography that came out around that time was a key enabler too. And the repress of that prick Moynihan's book.

Wire journalists had their ears open too but I don't recall seeing anything there until 2005, when they did a hopelessly ill-informed primer on "subterranean metal". Edwin Pouncey started hanging around with Stephen O'Malley.
