Thomas Dybdahl -- The only thread

I know the kind folks at of ILM are busy with much loftier pursuits, but, not having a proper thread on this artist is a huge oversight. Apparently, this guy is "the man" in his homeland of Norway, could it be that Dybdahl so desperately wants to be part of the American scene that puts people off? Hell, even Allmusic has practically shunned him by including an incomplete discography/bio and only single review of his proper albums.

Starting from a strong pop foundation, Dybdahl weaves narratives into both the broody and effervescent stylings of americana and jazz. His side-project "The National Bank" even dips heavily into ectronica. So, where's the love?

one month passes...

i've never heard of this guy before so i can only comment on that live yt clip. the first thing that slightly irritates me is his voice. it's some kind of falsetto which does not mount too high, it's a little thin like many voices in today's pop and rock music. probably an acquired taste, i can imagine getting used to it. the music especially the warm guitar tone and the subtle jazzy drums are quite loveable. when the brussels audience joins in the singing near the end the atmosphere gets intimate, it sounds kind of spiritual like a church choir. so overall i'd like to hear more from dybdahl. where to continue?

it's the distortion, stupid! (alex in mainhattan), Friday, 3 May 2013 07:36 (twelve years ago)
