My 8-Year-Old Son's First Mix Disc

I just burned this for him. It's made up of his favorite songs, most of which he discovered independent of anything he heard me play. He got them from his "Just Dance" video game, from hearing them from kids and teachers at his after-school program, and just from random YouTubing. I don't love all of them, but on the whole I'm happy with his taste...

(my vote is "Katy on a Mission," because that's my favorite song on that album and I was happy he picked it out)

I love how "The Final Countdown" is just wedged in there.

I Want You Back, no question

Heyman (crüt), Saturday, 30 March 2013 16:00 (thirteen years ago)

It's been fun to watch how he finds music, and what he latches on to. I try to not push too much on him and his brother, but sometimes I'll play him something I think he'll like. And sometimes he will, but my endorsement doesn't really seem to matter -- he likes what he likes.

I should note that he sequenced this whole thing in his head and dictated it to me. He thought about it for days.

you should be proud.
(but not of his music taste..j/k)

I will say that for Christian rap (which he heard at his after-school program), Trip Lee is ok. Things have come a ways from DC Talk.

I started my kids at 5 on Gene Clark, Faust and Trout Mask Replica.

Is that Katy B song featured in a video game? Cause that seems to be the most out of place to me.

MarkoP, Saturday, 30 March 2013 17:37 (thirteen years ago)

voting for "Smooth Criminal" because I loved that song when I was 8, too. big fan of both the Pink songs, though.

Smooth Criminal vs. I Want You Back for me. Went with the former for the sole reason that, if pressed, its the one I'd most want to listen to right now.

I love that.

I too loved Smooth Criminal when I was 8, but I ended up voting for I Want You Back.

MarkoP, Saturday, 30 March 2013 17:47 (thirteen years ago)

Final Countdown because

I love how "The Final Countdown" is just wedged in there.

Hey Boy Hey Girl -- Chemical Brothers
12. Katy on a Mission -- Katy B
13. The Final Countdown -- Europe
14. We Are Young -- fun. feat. Janelle Monae

this feels like some new years eve shit, party really starting to gel and then you gotta pause to do the thing w/ 'final countdown' in the 11:57 spot and then 'we are young' after the balldrop. voted katy b.

My 7 year old brother won't listen to anything but Stevie Ray Vaughan and Friday by Rebecca Black.*

*After a month of having to hear the Rebecca Black version constantly, I made the editorial decision that he was only allowed to listen to the Stephen Colbert version.

The only mix-CD in the whole of human history that will have "I Want You Back" and "The Final Countdown" together. I'll be voting for one of them...I get the 11-year-old version of this from my students. I started out liking the Justin Bieber/Nicki Minaj song, but 500 plays later (as five girls prepare a dance routine) I sometimes step out into the hallway to get away.

Is that Katy B song featured in a video game? Cause that seems to be the most out of place to me.

That came from me playing the album in the car. After the first few times through he started asking for that track to be repeated.

I have yet to figure out where the David Guetta song came from, but he was adamant that it had to be the lead-off.

Great list. Going with "Smooth Criminal," although I bet I would have loved "Hey Boy Hey Girl" as an 8-year old. Here we go!

ur son has amazing taste

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Monday, 1 April 2013 10:39 (thirteen years ago)

"the last song" seems most out of place - kids generally go for bangers over dark gothic srs-face ballads, right?

voting bieber, i think

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Monday, 1 April 2013 10:40 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, I don't know where he heard "The Last Song." But he does have a thing for power ballads. During a Green Day phase a few years ago, we spent a lot of time listening to "21 Guns."

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Monday, 1 April 2013 14:21 (thirteen years ago)

Some great stuff on there, but voting "Try" simply on the strength of this tv perf, one of the best I've ever seen on a chatshow:
