For me 'greatest garage band in the world' especially on their last few albums, did you listen to Putrifiers II?

Yeah, Putrifiers II was a masterpiece, my favourite LP of last year. They're far beyond the average garage band, IMHO, not least for the freakbeat influence, and Dwyer's offhand pop gift.

suzuki & the parrot otm. putrifiers was great, and this is even better. finally managing a seamless integration of yelpy garage jamming, gentle psychedelic pop and glassy neu!-style drones. with the milk music full-length, my favorite album of the year so far.

This record is fucking sweet.

The violins on Minotaur are so good - so many times they are used for little effect but to say 'Look we have violins.'

I've liked some stray tracks and singles by these dudes, but this whole album has clicked beautifully for me.

nice p4k review. reads like bnm even if it ain't. funny only in that they started out as concept band where all the songs were about death, so the bloodiness is nothing new.

No Spell is an early favorite of mine. Only 4 tracks in, of course! But I had to listen to it again first run through, so it's got that going for it.

I liked Putrifiers II a lot better. "So Nice" / "Cloud #1" is my favorite. Is he really throat-singing? I would love to see them live.

that's a great review, but idg the whole "what album should i start with if they're all good?' line - just get the newest one! and then work back from there! (also i'd argue the pre-freakbeat LPs are very much a different thang)

I was always kind of "aware" of them since Master's Bedroom, but it's only really been since Carrion Crawler that I've gone head over heels for them.

they put on an amazing show- jon dwyer has a really good presence and is actually a fucking amazing guitarist. plus, he processes part of his signal thru a space echo, i'm always a sucker for that

i remember seeing Coachwhips play on the floor to about 150 ppl back into Big V's a long time ago that was insane

I just found out that an old friend of mine who I'd fallen out of touch with does a bunch of their artwork and album covers (not this one, though, apparently). Which was thoroughly unsurprising, knowing his style.

enjoying this. get excited when they release something these days mostly because it means they're gonna tour. still think floating coffin was their peak... this is good though, grabbing me more than mutilator. i miss the classic lineup! i thought they were much better live

I feel like every album they do (since Putrifiers II at least) is "more of the same", but better, like they are homing in ever-closer to the perfect Oh Sees album, and this one is closest yet, and is brilliant, and I can listen to their music to absolute death and still get an amazing thrill out of it. The last track is glorious. The weird funky instrumental is great. The Lupine-esq

e guitar freakout track (Gelatinous Cube) is excellent. Theirs is a sound I literally can't imagine getting tired of.

I love Orc but I can't stop playing the first track. I have listened to the first track like a billion times more than the other tracks, which I also love. That thing he does with the high-register guitar sounds, all screechy with delay on it, is just so fucking exciting.

Also my commute the last few months has more often than not been soundtracked by Contraption from the live album, over and over again. Its like the platonic ideal of John Dwyer skronky guitar noise.

Does anyone know why this band hates Washington DC and never plays here? (I mean, I can guess)

Saw them two weeks ago, first time. Also my first mosh pit (at 40! only fell down once). Had a great time. Probably goes without saying, but earplugs are recommended (I didn't wear them, and everything sounded like garbage for a day or so afterward).

Also, Smote Reverser is my fave Oh Sees since Floating Coffin and I am playing it right now. They ride grooves better than ever before, I think, maybe a benefit of the double-drummer lineup.

Double drummer line-up, you say? No wonder this album is such a trip.

Haven’t seen them in a while, but when they were touring as a five-piece/double-drums lineup around Putrifiers II I saw them as often as I could, some of the most exciting shows I’ve ever seen, just everything I want out of rock & roll music. I remember thinking that Dwyer reminded me of James Brown for the way he was able to perfectly work the tension & release dynamics of the crowd, commanding this ultra locked-in band that could go off like a nuclear bomb but also stop on a dime at the slightest glance or gesture from him.

Holy guacamole, that was a killer, killer set. Definitely in my top 5 live bands now. The tone he’s pulling out of that guitar + the two drummer beat downs . Crowd at the Albert Hall was absolutely bouncing too.

Cigarettes aren’t cool but when he lit one up two thirds in I couldn’t help but think damn you deserve one. Rock and fucking roll.

Prettiest Eyes were excellent too.

they're one of my top shows too. one show i went to had some active antagonism between the openers and OCs and the crowd and OCs and it made it even better, a little rock and roll danger going on. john dwyer also chugged an entire corona with just his face and mouth, pretty impressive

i lost track of keeping up with the albums around Memory of a Cut Off Head, but picked up a handful newish Dwyer-related stuff recently and my favorite surprise has been this Witch Egg LP - Dwyer and some others doing improvised(i assume?) kosmische-psych-jazz jams complete with upright bass and sax, excellent grooves, has really been hitting the spot this month.

Yeah, I've really enjoyed this turn Dwyer has taken over the pandemic into this whole jazz thing. I actually haven't heard the Witch Egg one yet, but I'm loving the hell out of the newest one, Gong Splat.

Yeah I'm loving it too. Its so satisfying bc those influences have obv always been there with him, but as he's gotten better over the years he's just honed it so much that he can actually credibly pull of this sort of full-bore Can/electric Miles thing. What an arc this guy has had over the last 20 years.

Saw Osees this weekend, it was a terrific show. Pretty killer setlist, mostly focused from Drop era stuff onwards to the latest albums.

Apparently these guys are big among the King Gizz crowd... SO MANY younger kids in King Gizz shirts at the show, including a trio of people in matching King Gizz hockey jerseys.

If you thought King Gizzard was big with OSees fans try going to a Ween show!

Have never seen these guys because as far as I can tell they haven't been to the DC/Baltimore area in well over a decade. They must really hate it.

Castle Face put out an early Gizz record and I believe put on shows/played with them on their early trips to the US. And there's a lot of similarities between early Gizz and mid-period Osees - the double drums, the FX-laced high register guitars, even the echo-laden yelps that punctuate both bands' sets.

Oh yeah, I can see why they'd like both bands, just surprised by how much King Gizz swag was in the crowd.

Anyway, back to Osees, it was my first time seeing them and I don't know that I could have asked for a better setlist. The way they put Rincon and Quattrone right up front really helps emphasize the heft and drive they bring to the band.

I was at the same show, jon (assuming you're referring to the Saturday show, as I also saw the hockey jerseys)! It was great. My brother and a rotating group of companions have been coming to town to see them every September for a number of years but this was my first time back (and my first live show period) since before the pandemic. Fantastic way to break the seal.

Yep, I was indeed at the Saturday show.

I'm seeing them at Gonerfest in a couple weeks and really psyched about it, amazed to realize its been close to 10 years since the last time. From 2008-2014 I used to make a point to catch them whenever I could, but as they started graduating to fests and bigger venues they stopped coming through my neck of the woods. Happy that it sounds like the set will be mostly stuff I've never heard live.

New album is unsurprisingly great, just such a consistent band.

Got tickets to see them again this fall, can't wait. Would see them both nights, but I'll be at Slift the second night they are in town. Gonna be a killer weekend of live music.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention, the notable thing about the new album? No guitars.
