i know that the rock charts on billboard are a bit of a hoot and stomp nightmare right now but the return of fall out boy might mitigate this? also apparently awolnation's 'kill your heroes' is being re-reissued as a single now, which i am totally fine with

So should I listen to Imagine Dragons?

If there's anything I've learned from playing Songpop on Facebook, it's that I paid zero attention this genre for at least the past 13-15 years.

If only American radio had not been deregulated in the 90s (and fm rock radio not turned into AOR by Lee Abrams in the late '70s)...

(from january)
I heard 10 seconds of an Imagine Dragons song in a commercial and thought they sounded like AWOLNATION 2.0

not 2013 but 2011, but i was listening to the rock radio stations in vegas last weekend and heard this song, which is actually pretty okay, which surprised me because i have felt hatred for seether since high school

― dyl, Friday, 24 May 2013 07:46 (twelve years ago)
oh and i posted it here b/c i keep hearing it on the alt rock radio station, altho to my ears it could just as well fit in the rolling pop thread
― dyl, Friday, 24 May 2013 07:47 (twelve years ago)
*EVERY movie trailer gah
yeah it's def primarily an alt radio hit but it'll prob cross over soon enough.
lotta terrible new acts on the rock charts these days, can't keep Capital Cities and The Neighborhood and New Politics straight
― my mans ray manzarek (some dude), Friday, 24 May 2013 11:52 (twelve years ago)
Anything new here worth paying attention to?
― curmudgeon, Monday, 29 July 2013 22:22 (eleven years ago)
The Neighborhood's "Sweater Weather" and Muse's "Panic Station" are my favorites so far this year. Atlas Genius's new one better than their first hit also.
― some dude, Monday, 29 July 2013 22:30 (eleven years ago)
thanks
― curmudgeon, Tuesday, 30 July 2013 03:59 (eleven years ago)

oi, modern rock listeners:
i never listen to modern rock radio anymore, so i have no idea about this. on the harder end of modern rock programming, would vocals like this (the hoarse growling ones, not the sung ones)
http://www.invisibleoranges.com/2013/06/mouth-of-the-architect-dawning/
place the music as 'abrasive' or relatively normal? they seem pretty polite to me but a lot of the sounds here are otherwise kind of modern-rock-ready (snare sound, sung vocals, anthemic dynamics)
― j., Thursday, 1 August 2013 06:08 (eleven years ago)
xps OH! So that's what Capital Cities sounds like. I have a friend who talks about them a lot, and now I know I shouldn't listen to her anymore.
― Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Thursday, 1 August 2013 06:14 (eleven years ago)
Capital Cities just entered the Billboard Hot 100 Top 10 this week. Why are they considered alt rock again? They just sound like pure dance pop to me. Have you heard their covers of "Nothing Compares 2 U" an "Holiday" ?
― LeRooLeRoo, Thursday, 8 August 2013 17:43 (eleven years ago)
Well I never quite understood how Sinead O Connor's Nothing Compares 2U was alt rock either.
― MarkoP, Thursday, 8 August 2013 18:17 (eleven years ago)
lol otm
