Insufferably Rockist Triva Thread

Because I'm a cranky old man who is sick to death of reading about Pink, Justin Timberlake, the fuckin' Neptunes and Clipse, I figured it was high goddamn time to start a thread that speaks to embittered, frowny rockheads like myself....a place where rockist curmudgeons can spar and try to out-do each other in sadly pathetic arena of knowitalldom. Here's how it works": come up with some choice, preferably not too easy trivia questions and list them here, only don't divulge the answers until people've had a chance to answer'em. I'll throw down a few to start....and NO cheating on Allmusic.com, now! Be fair!

- "What do the initials SST -- as in Black Flag's old label -- stand for?"

- "Name two other bands Twisted Sister bassist Mark 'The Animal' Mendoza has played for?"

- "Metallica/Motley Crue producer Bob Rock used to play in what band?"

- "Who did Siouxsie & the Banshees used to dedicate their cover of 'Helter Skelter' to onstage?"

- "Paul Raven of Killing Joke played in which band *PRIOR* to the Joke?"

- "Who produced the Damned's MUSIC FOR PLEASURE album?"

- "Whose voice interupts the Clash's 'Armagiddeon Time' at the three-minute mark?"

- "The opening note of Cheap Tricks's ALL SHOOK UP album -- produced by George Martin -- is actually the closing note of someone else's album...name it?"

- "Who are Soft White Underbelly?"

- "Which American comedian designed album covers for the bands America and Poco?"

- "Not strictly a rockist question, but the word BEASTIE in the name Beastie Boys is actually a very word acronym. What does it stand for?"

- "Who produced both Alien Sex Fiend's ACID BATH album and Paul McCartney's FIREMAN album?"

- "Who are those people with Jim Caroll on the front cover of the Jim Caroll Band's CATHOLIC BOY album?"

- "Who is 'The Magnificent' by the Professionals about?"

- "Who played the vibes on Edwyn Collins' 'A Girl like You'?"

the answer to your first question is solid state transformers.

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 4 October 2002 15:16 (twenty-three years ago)

- "Name two other bands Twisted Sister bassist Mark 'The Animal' Mendoza has played for?"

Erm, the Dictators? Could be totally wrong on that one.

- "Metallica/Motley Crue producer Bob Rock used to play in what band?"

The Payola$.

hstencil, Friday, 4 October 2002 15:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Music For Pleasure - produced by Rick Wright? (one of Floyd anyway)

Soft White Underbelly - became Blue Oyster Cult, I think (wasn't Meltzer a member of SWU?)

McCartney's Fireman alb produced by Youth, so I presume the Alien Sex Fiend is as well

I think it's Jim Carroll's parents on the front of that alb.

Andrew L (Andrew L), Friday, 4 October 2002 15:25 (twenty-three years ago)

by the way, alex, the clipse album really fucking bangs.

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 4 October 2002 15:26 (twenty-three years ago)

"Paul Raven of Killing Joke played in which band *PRIOR* to the Joke?"
Neon Hearts

"Who produced the Damned's MUSIC FOR PLEASURE album?"
Nick Mason. The story is that they wanted Syd Barrett, but when they couldn't get him they settled for the Mr Mason.

"Whose voice interupts the Clash's 'Armagiddeon Time' at the three-minute mark?"
I'll hazard a guess - is it Mikey Dread?

"Who is 'The Magnificent' by the Professionals about?"
I strongly suspect it's about Mr Lydon

"Who played the vibes on Edwyn Collins' 'A Girl like You'?"
Another guess - is it Dennis Bovell?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 4 October 2002 15:26 (twenty-three years ago)

[never heard of half of these bands]

Cheap Trick [heard of but never heard...] question - is that Sgt Pepper?

michael (michael), Friday, 4 October 2002 15:28 (twenty-three years ago)

[never heard of half of these bands]

Don't worry; you ain't missing shit. ;-)

nathalie (nathalie), Friday, 4 October 2002 15:33 (twenty-three years ago)

"Who played the vibes on Edwyn Collins' 'A Girl like You'?"
Another guess - is it Dennis Bovell?

.... and if it isn't Blackbeard then I want to put in reserve bids on Paul Cook (he's been playing drums for Edwyn for quite a while) and (trick question maybe?) Mr Collins himself!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 4 October 2002 15:36 (twenty-three years ago)

The American comedian one is Phil Hartman.

Rahul Kamath (Rahul Kamath), Friday, 4 October 2002 15:48 (twenty-three years ago)

"Name two other bands Twisted Sister bassist Mark 'The Animal' Mendoza has played for?"

Manowar and the Dictators?

Kris (aqueduct), Friday, 4 October 2002 16:41 (twenty-three years ago)

SST = Sweaty Serious Twerps?

jel -- (jel), Friday, 4 October 2002 16:45 (twenty-three years ago)

2) Vibrators, Roxy Music, Adam & The Ants

3) Adam & The Ants, Gloria Mundi, Mean Streets, Art Attacks

4) Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Swing Out Sister, Visage, PiL, Siouxsie & The Banshees, 3 Mustaphas 3

5) Damned, Culture Club

7) Alien Sex Fiend, Wet Wet Wet, Art Of Noise, Bananarama, Test Dept., Erasure, Faith No More, Dido, James, Kate Bush, Crowded House, The Orb, Tom Jones, The Verve, Gong, Shack, Yaz

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 4 October 2002 16:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Is that one connection per question, or is it a connect-the-dots?

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 4 October 2002 16:49 (twenty-three years ago)

i think it's common members... #6 would be Eric Drew Feldman.

gygax!, Friday, 4 October 2002 16:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Nice work....I'll answer the ones that no one picked up:

Q: "Who did Siouxsie & the Banshees used to dedicate their cover of'Helter Skelter' to onstage?"

A: Murder Victim Sharon Tate's husband, director Roman Polanski

Q: "Whose voice interupts the Clash's 'Armagiddeon Time' at the three-minute mark?"

A: Kosmo Vinyl

Q: - "Not strictly a rockist question, but the word BEASTIE in the name Beastie Boys is actually a very word acronym. What does it stand for?"

A: Boys Entering Anarchistic States Towards Inner Excellence. Sad, eh?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 4 October 2002 17:02 (twenty-three years ago)

"The American comedian one is Phil Hartman."

Get the fuck outta here! I didn't think he could get any cooler.

R.I.P.

g.cannon (gcannon), Friday, 4 October 2002 17:09 (twenty-three years ago)

#2 is hunky bassist Gary Tibbs

dan (dan), Friday, 4 October 2002 17:46 (twenty-three years ago)

"Which American comedian designed album covers for the bands America and Poco?"

Phil Hartman was Canadian (and Hartmann back in his album art days).

Vic Funk, Friday, 4 October 2002 17:54 (twenty-three years ago)

"Metallica/Motley Crue producer Bob Rock used to play in what band?"
hstencil mentioned Payola$, but who can't forget his other fab project, Rock and Hyde?

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 4 October 2002 18:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Get the fuck outta here! I didn't think he could get any cooler.

Yeah, actually, he was a really good artist too. Check out the cover to America's Greatest Hits. Clearly, he had talent.

Rahul Kamath (Rahul Kamath), Friday, 4 October 2002 19:01 (twenty-three years ago)

"Is that one connection per question, or is it a connect-the-dots?"

One connection per question (otherwise it would just have been one long list, wouldn't it?!)

#2 is hunky bassist Gary Tibbs

Correct dan.

"I think it's common members... #6 would be Eric Drew Feldman."

Not necessarily, but that is the correct answer for #6 gygax!....

For 10 bonus points, which other band is EDF a member of?

Alex in NYC, shame on you - I got the bleedin' Neon Hearts (actually, I even SAW the Neon Hearts at least once!), I'd have expected you to get the right answer to #7!

Out of interest 'though mate, which of my multiple guesses actually was the vibe player on A Girl Like You?

Someone else's turn to ask some questions, I think

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 4 October 2002 21:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Call me naive, but this is something I only learnt tonight by accident.
Who is the "you" in Wish You Were Here?
Hint: It is the same "you" as in Shine on You Crazy Diamond.
By the way: This was one of my favourite albums in the 70s.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Friday, 4 October 2002 22:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Syd, of course!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 4 October 2002 22:25 (twenty-three years ago)

ps. Eric Drew Feldman has also been part of Frank Black's band The Catholics.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 4 October 2002 22:27 (twenty-three years ago)

"ps. Eric Drew Feldman has also been part of Frank Black's band The Catholics."

True, but not the answer I was looking for - far too obvious!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 4 October 2002 22:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, he played with Snakefinger, so possibly ... The Residents?

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 4 October 2002 22:33 (twenty-three years ago)

"Well, he played with Snakefinger, so possibly ... The Residents?"

Sssssh! That's supposed to be a secret! Take your 10 points in this plain sealed brown envelope and never mention it again.

The rest of you - keep moving along, there's nothing of interest for you here....

"Molly Hancock" 'though? Really! Either they thisnmk we're stupid or they're getting lazy or they're not that bothered about the anonymity any more!

Any interesting guesses about the identities of any other Residents Sean?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 4 October 2002 22:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Another easy question: What does "Thin White Rope" mean and where does the name come from?

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Friday, 4 October 2002 22:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I was actually thinking about the Residents the other day and wondering what the musical world would do if they took off their eyeball heads and everyone suddenly realized that they were actually...GASP...The Rolling Stones!?

As for other members of the Residents, I don't have anything apart from really wild guesses. As far as I know, members of the Grateful Dead were part of the collective. AMG lists Chris Cutler, so maybe some of his cohorts, like Fred Frith? Eugene Chadbourne?

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 4 October 2002 22:48 (twenty-three years ago)

"Out of interest 'though mate, which of my multiple guesses actually was the vibe player on A Girl Like You?"

Someone else nabbed it: Paul Cook!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 4 October 2002 23:26 (twenty-three years ago)

"Another easy question: What does "Thin White Rope" mean and where does the name come from?"

William S. Burroughs and I believe it refers to semen.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 5 October 2002 00:01 (twenty-three years ago)

GASP? Why Gasp? That would be fantastic! That would actually give me a reason to like the Residents.
