I secretly love ultra-reactionary country music videos where artists angrily beat their chests about being southern and conservative and express deep-seated suspicion of yankees

Especially these two. Actually, only these two. I don't know any other ones.

haven't listen yet but that looks promising: will hear this at home, full blast, for an optimal experience. big fan of anti-intellectualism 'tude.

Second one is actually a pretty good song imo. First one is just sort of creepy and batshit but I enjoy the darkness of it.

fwiw I think there are threads where both are discussed. hoping to find other examples. Hank Jr. is a pretty good songwriter/performer, aside from being reprehensible.

accidental yankee

bitCOINTELPRO (buzza), Monday, 15 April 2013 01:34 (twelve years ago)

Fly Over States isn't really in the same realm as the first two songs. For the most part, it's just an advertisement for the Oklahoma board of tourism or whatever. It's not political or confrontational at all.

happened upon this one. also not really angry at all, just defensive. I just find it funny the way it seems like he keeps making that "I'm a little bit dumb" face on purpose.

And there's Eric Church's "Homeboy," the best song of the bunch.

Aeriel View on WFMU did an entire show about this last week. Not sure if you heard it, but here's the link ... show's full of all sorts of goodies, including some songs posted here.

the vocal rhythm on a country boy can survive always reminded me of another song... i think the night the lights went out in georgia

I secretly think that ultra-reactionary southern conservatives are ignorant hate-mongers

bodacious ignoramus, Monday, 15 April 2013 18:55 (twelve years ago)

Along with Okie (and performed a few minutes later it seems) this one is a foundational document

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZHAFmFsb9XM

It's not nearly as colorful though, save "squirrelly guy who don't believe in fightin'". I've got a Charlie Louvin version somewhere that's got a lot more anger than Merle musters.

Since Merle didn't live it like he wrote it, there's a detached bemusement to his delivery that really comes across in these videos.

Most of Hag's early eighties material is beautifully sung, tuneful, and reactionary.

oh ha, I just watched another Hank Jr. video where he sang some song about "not apologizing for america" and it had the phrase "fightin side of me."

--808 542137 (Hurting 2), Monday, 15 April 2013 18:59 (twelve years ago)

why do you like this

clouds, Monday, 15 April 2013 19:00 (twelve years ago)

for the rhetorical technique, these songs always remind me of Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer

bendy, Monday, 15 April 2013 19:03 (twelve years ago)

I've been thinking about that -- of course a good part of it is irony/disbelief/the over-the-topness of all of it. But I think it's also partly related to that thing Kim Gordon says about seeing rock musicians perform -- you're paying to watch someone else believe in themselves. Take away the content, and the appeal of these songs is a kind of bombastic certainty, certainty to an extreme fault, that isn't there in most music I listen to.

--808 542137 (Hurting 2), Monday, 15 April 2013 19:04 (twelve years ago)

okay i do have to say that the first montgomery gentry video is like the irl version of cs lewis jr.
