ie the poll no one voted in

no but seriously the battle of great 10+ minute acid-rock guitar terrorism epics released in 1997.

Elvis Telecom will have the answer.

should be noted that the AMT album that "Speed Guru" appears on is just one long track (where Speed Guru comes second) so the track time was taken from an Mp3 version of the album I have that took apart the individual tracks

Drugs A. Money, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 15:40 (twelve years ago)

anyhow, I am voting for Speed Guru; it basically sounds a lot like if Mother Sky had been a Rallizes song instead of a Can one. Plus, it'll probably be very near the top of my ballot when it comes time for Leee's long songs/epic poll, (Real II, by being less than 15 mins, likely won't qualify) so this thread is partially started as a way for me to campaign for it prematurely...

weird. have been listening to gravitar a bunch lately. not sure why, as i never dig them quite as much as i think i should. keep trying anyway, sisyphean listening. if i ever change do my mind, "real life" won't be the track that does it. "rocket to dearborn" maybe?

never heard the AMT track, but it fucking rules. exactly what i want out of an acid guitar epic, which is to say propulsive as fuck, cosmic noise riding the beat down an endless wormhole. the noise to space truckin' ratio tips way too hard towards the former, but that's ever the case w AMT. thums up.

Not seen Gravitar mentioned in ages. Are they still going?
I stuck the palindromic cd on my walkman cos I had it around. So tracks turn up at odd intervals and leave me wondering who they are for a while. Good lp that one I have, though I'm not sure if the cd was a bit damaged too.
But yeah, pretty great atavistic noise innit?

Stevolende, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 16:26 (twelve years ago)

hey you found it contenderizer, thank you! xp

yeah Gravitar is great, at least the first three albums, which are the ones I've heard. I wish Real II/Real Life was up on Youtube so I could kinda post it for you guys, it's deafening guitar abuse soaked in dub echo, with meager strands of Cream/Hendrix style space rock barely audible above the abstract-noise/horror movie sfx din. Killer coda as well.

Never heard Rocket to Dearborn, but will have to check it out...

it's later, less feral, more traditionally rock. if you love the completely discombobulated early gravitar, you might not dig.

i gave a bit of a listen, it's cool, will probably get back to it sooner rather than later. it kinda sounded like they were taking their trademark caterwaul into more of a standard postrock template? which could be interesting...

I really need to dig into their later discography tbh. I don't think they are still playing together, but I'm not at all sure they aren't. Same with Paik, actually

Let's make this a proper debate:

Thanks!

ha thank you for putting "Real II" on youtube, something I was a bit too lazy to find out how to do myself...

anyways, listening to both of them, while clearly neither of them would be described as 'high fiddelity' I do think that the Gravitar song does possess a bit more clarity as to all the different layers of recording, whereas Speed Guru is very much more supercharged lo-fi sludge (not to its disadvantage, mind you; the real movement of the song is the sway of its resonances. I was listening to SG on the way home from work a couple nights ago, and it was quite the trip.)

Strangely enough, I've never bothered to seek out the pre-2000s AMT stuff, so I'm listening to "Speed Guru" for the first time, and the pseudo-motorik beat, there it is.

But as for the epics poll, I was planning on setting the minimum length to be 20 minutes, though I'm more than amenable to 18!

Yeah I kinda agree

Drugs A. Money, Sunday, 21 April 2013 13:07 (twelve years ago)

The epic AMT jamz I prefer tend to be less of the super-lofi blown-out noise psychoses, and more on the riffier and groovier RAWK side.

R = J - L (Leee), Sunday, 21 April 2013 18:33 (twelve years ago)

Thats one of the most coherently rawk AMT jamz I know!, as I said before, like Rallizes coming up w their own Mother Sky
