The Knife is a good one.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 18:42 (twelve years ago)

Not that he hasn't always been kinda experimental, but Rundgren going from "Hello It's Me" to "A Treatise On Cosmic Fire" within the span of three years gets kinda weird and difficult.

Was thinking 2 or 3 of these elements usually go together but suppose they're not always the one and the same....Fugazi toned the volume down on and off towards the end but increased their experimental side..but were still recognizably Fugazi

The Who got louder than they were at the beginning. Not satisfied, they got louder than everyone else, too.

"Weirder" is a tough one...they largely ditched the feedback, but in favor of minimalist organ/synth loops.

swans got less loud thru the 80s

sleepingsignal, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 19:21 (twelve years ago)

First SWANS record is significantly LESS loud that the albums that came after it, though you're right -- they then got less loud again (though in an entirely different way).

Alex in NYC, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 19:21 (twelve years ago)

than...

Alex in NYC, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 19:21 (twelve years ago)

yeah i know filth is more straightforward than their subsequent stuff ... op specifies "over time" which i read as more than the difference between a couple of albums.

Primal Scream up until Exterminator.

Soft Cell seemed to get a bit darker with their three albums.

I haven't heard all his albums but Tricky seemed to following this pattern for a while.

Okay fair enough. I did think Give Up did kind of count as it's a little more aggressive/louder than Screamadelica.

Divine Styler

― four Marxes plus four Obamas plus four Bin Ladens (Shakey Mo Collier), 16. huhtikuuta 2013 21:38

Divine Styler's third album is much more straightforward hip-hop (though still kinda eccentric) than the second one.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 17 April 2013 11:04 (twelve years ago)

Mouse on Mars is a pretty good example of this, no? Their first album is pretty straightforward techno/trance, in the 00s they're doing artsy IDM and collaborating with the Fall singer.

Also a good example of this kind of progression not necessarily being a good thing.
