What'cha think? Too offensive in the wake of Monday's events on Boston?
― Alex in NYC, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 19:13 (twelve years ago)
I think they should just change it anyway based on the fact that it is a horrible album cover. Plus Biggie already released Ready to Die in 1994.
― scubasteve, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 19:19 (twelve years ago)
The title suggests comparison with Andrew WK to me and I doubt there will be anything here that can stand up to his "Ready To Die".
― everything, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 19:22 (twelve years ago)
morelike will they re-think before April 23

Boston wasn't attacked by a suicide bomber, so probably not
― bowling for bitcoins (Lee626), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 19:33 (twelve years ago)
they should re-think before recording this album, which will most likely be horrible. especially without Ron Asheton.

Might dig out The Weirdness and see how it holds up/refresh my memory... I remember especially liking 'My Idea Of Fun'...
― The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 19:56 (twelve years ago)
you should rethink that memory
― "Turkey In The Straw" coming from someplace in the clouds (Sparkle Motion), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 20:05 (twelve years ago)
Well, I just listened to the track again and still liked it, so...
― The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 20:11 (twelve years ago)
that's cool-- I just really hated that album.
― "Turkey In The Straw" coming from someplace in the clouds (Sparkle Motion), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 20:13 (twelve years ago)
The one song I've heard from this is a brick-walled pile of awfulness. A boring song turned actively offensive by bad mixing. And that cover doesn't look scary - Iggy's so old, it looks like something he's wearing under medical advice.
― 誤訳侮辱, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 20:53 (twelve years ago)
He looks like he's joined the English Defence League.

This was my reaction to the Weirdness times every track

The Weirdness was so bad. I reviewed it for, I think, the Cleveland Scene, and re-posted it on my blog; here's a link. I saw the Stooges before the album was made, when the only post-Fun House song they were playing was "Skull Ring," and even that was lame. I have zero reason to believe this album will be anything but terrible.
― 誤訳侮辱, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 21:04 (twelve years ago)
I liked the new song. Brickwalling didn't bug me since the version of Raw Power I had was mastered at like 102db. I liked it more than anything on Weirdness, anyway.
― kaleb h. (Everything You Like Sucks), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 21:13 (twelve years ago)
Just revisited the Weirdness today and I fucking love it. I feel liking viewing it through a Half Japanese filter is key.
― da croupier, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 21:53 (twelve years ago)
Yeah!
I really liked side 3 a lot, can't imagine the album without it.
― Mark G, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 21:55 (twelve years ago)
Obv not everyone needs to hear a bunch of acid-rock Louie-Louies from old farts led by a celeb, but the degree of anger it inspired from Stooges fans leads me to believe most were under the impression the Stooges were a cool band.
― da croupier, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 21:56 (twelve years ago)
da croupier the tweet you made about the weirdness earlier today was more offensive to me than anything that anyone said about boston. i don't know what that says about me.

― LADIES ONLY PHYCHIC NIGHT (crüt), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 21:59 (twelve years ago)
fun house remains the bees knees and no individual song from the weirdness beats the anthem on albums 1 & 3, but when I wanna hear old stooges I'd put on Fun House, and not the one with "We Will Fall" on it. Raw Power is something I enjoy but I don't really play '70s Alice Cooper much either. Meanwhile, The Weirdness just feels like an admittedly hilarious but brave sequel to what was awesome about The Stooges. If you think it's simply embarrassing and leave it at that, I'm guessing you might be more of an "Iggy & The Stooges" person anyway?
Tentatively curious about this album, though I'll miss Asheton a lot.
― da croupier, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 22:03 (twelve years ago)
like sorry but if your stooges review opens with Every once in a while, mostly when David Bowie takes charge, Iggy Pop’s willing to work hard and even stretch himself artistically we're looking for very different things from the stooges - The Weirdness is still big dumb acid rock pummels with Iggy Pop hollering about what a horny worm he is and what year it is, only now he's a rich horny worm AND HE DON'T CARE.
― da croupier, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 22:11 (twelve years ago)

i don't mind stooges reunion records, there were so many awful stooges cash-in records on the market already seems only fair to let the actual stooges deliberately make some for once
― balls, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 22:20 (twelve years ago)
i think the only iggy record i've managed to make it all the way thru in the past twenty years was preliminaires. and i'm a fan of soldier so my bar isn't too high to clear here.
― balls, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 22:24 (twelve years ago)
I haven't heard The Weirdness, can't imagine the Stooges as a band full of industry vets being at all interesting, but
...well, they were. I mean, if your definition of "cool" = "what young people like," no, but presumably nobody who bothers thinking about the q hasn't outgrown that yet - on the evidence of the self-titled album through Raw Power, the Stooges were ridiculously cool beyond all measure. Started cool, stayed cool, ceased upon the midnight with no pain cool. OTOH, reuniting w/o losing cool has been pulled off by exactly one band so far imo (Mission of Burma; possibly Wire, but I'm not as sure), reunions are inherently uncool

― da croupier, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 22:32 (twelve years ago)
OTM re: Mission of Burma. Scratch Acid were pretty great when I saw them a few years ago.
― LADIES ONLY PHYCHIC NIGHT (crüt), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 22:33 (twelve years ago)
burma benefited from the fact that they dressed like middle aged men when they were in their 20s.
― da croupier, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 22:35 (twelve years ago)
dinosaur jr kinda weirdly gained cool w/ their reunion imo
― balls, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 22:38 (twelve years ago)
"Re-think" would imply that there was ALREADY some actual thinking involved in creating that awful cover (better suited to a White Stripes reunion record a decade from now)
― Sir Lord Baltimora (Myonga Vön Bontee), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 22:39 (twelve years ago)
i probably should have used the word "respectable" rather than "cool" sorry if that threw anybody
― da croupier, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 22:39 (twelve years ago)
good lord who thinks of 'respectable' as a synonym for 'cool'? are you an accountant or claims adjuster or something?
― balls, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 22:41 (twelve years ago)
balls, why are you behaving like this
― da croupier, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 22:42 (twelve years ago)
Yow will never not be an amazing frontman and it's hard for me to imagine the rest of those guys not delivering 100%, they're an almost unique quantity I think - there was little more irritating that Jesus Lizard evangelists back when but they were right about one thing, that crew delivers the damn goods live
xp croup otm, burma tricked the game by entering old
― not feeling those lighters (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 22:42 (twelve years ago)
I have no perspective on this - where I was at during the initial Dinosaur Jr come-up, they had no competition for cool
― not feeling those lighters (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 22:43 (twelve years ago)
yeah when i wrote that i was thinking of that long draw down and that this reunion has at least put a surprisingly happy endcap on it, then i remember o yeah the initial glory days and 'j mascis for president' etc and yeah they're nowhere near that cool
― balls, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 22:47 (twelve years ago)
does roxy music circa manifesto thru avalon count as a reunion?
― balls, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 22:48 (twelve years ago)
reuniting w/o losing cool has been pulled off by exactly one band so far imo (Mission of Burma; possibly Wire, but I'm not as sure), reunions are inherently uncool
If "regaining crucial member" counts as a reunion, then I give it to Iron Maiden. I think Wire were very cool when they initially reunited (saw them live in 2000 or so, when the second Read & Burn EP was being sold tour-only), but post-Send they've kind of fallen off, I think; Red Barked Tree in particular was terrible.

Had a listen to this - the rockers seem to be generally unsuccessful (although I kind of liked the title track) - the band seem willing but I'm not sure if Iggys voice is up to these any more and his subject matter seems usually puerile and kind of trite- but the slower/ acoustic based ones are more promising i.e The Departed, Beat that guy, Unfriendly world.
― Hinklepicker, Tuesday, 23 April 2013 03:56 (twelve years ago)
i'm kinda digging this! it's so goofy but it kinda works, better than the weirdness so far

I guess I meant is that a song about big tits from a guy in his 60's feels pretty weak and even the rocky songs where he tries to take on an issue or something darker ring hollow like his hearts not in it. The slower ones seem more authentic and seem to come closer to a more honest take on where he is at. I guess if you made a list of puerile and trite songs from throughout his career there might be many but I can't think of many Stooges songs from his first three which rang hollow in terms of a match between subject and execution - same with most of his solo records up til maybe his 80's period where he starts stretching himself more often - it becomes more obvious he is no longer Iggy Stooge but somebody else. I think in recent years he sometimes tries too hard to live up to his own formidable persona. But really though I don't mind - he can do what he wants - he is fucking Iggy Pop - he does care what I think and nor should he. I am just giving a reason why I don't think his songs resonate now as much as they could. I suppose an older man is still interested in breasts but thats not really that interesting is it and feels kind of wierd thinking about it. It compares I suppose to the song Pussy Walk on Naughty Little Doggy and that was slightly more successful I think because it had a kind of Crampsy humour. DD sounds to me utterly humourless.
